Los Angeles, Austin and Cleveland will launch 100-day challenges to accelerate efforts to end youth homelessness in their communities. Selected using a competitive application process, each commu- nity will receive support from The Rapid Results Institute (RRI) to drive toward their goals over 100 days, starting Sept. 7. RRI’s past challenges to address veteran homelessness have shown that the limited timeframe helps provide the urgency needed to identify, innovate and fuel effec- tive approaches for communities. The challenges are part of the national movement to end youth homelessness. “The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority is honored to have been selected to lead this extraordinary effort across Los Angeles County,” said Peter Lynn, LAHSA’s executive director. “The AWHA initiative will help us build on regional momentum to end youth home- lessness.” In its application, LAHSA pledged to place at least 100 youth in safe and stable housing over 100 days, beginning Sept. 7. There are approximately 3,540 homeless youth sheltered and unsheltered in the Los Angeles “Continuum of Care,” which includes all of L.A. County except Glendale, Long Beach and Pasadena. “The federal government is committed to ending youth and family homelessness by 2020,” said Rafael López, commissioner at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “We need to support and accelerate community generated ideas to deliver better results.” Organizations and communities interested in following the lessons learned by the three communities on their 100-day challenge should sign up to receive news from AWHA at awayhomeamerica.org.
