11 JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT originally Director's was conceived by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice / (lyrics) in 1967 as a 15-minute musicalization of the Biblical tale of Notes Joseph and his eleven brothers to be performed by a children's choir at the St. Paul's Junior School at Colet Court in London. Throughout the years JOSEPH made its way to the West End at the Albery Theatre in London in 1973, made its first Broadway appearance in 1982 at the Royal Theatre and then was revived in 1991 at the London Palladium. In 1993 it was revived again in Chicago with Donny Osmond and in New York with Michael Damian. The New York Times interviewed Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber about JOSEPH in February 1982 after they already had produced the great works of (1971) and (1976). Here are a few of their own reflections on JOSEPH: "A schoolmaster friend of ours asked us to write an end- of-term play for his kids," Tim Rice recalled. "It was a big comedown for us after our ambitions to have a show pro duced on the West End—a small audience, a cast of eleven- year-olds." "Hoio were we to know," Lloyd Webber continued, "that the popular music critic of The London Sunday Times had a son at the school, St. Paul's Junior School, in London? He reviewed it very favorably, and it's gone on and on since then. It's always playing somewhere or other in England. We've added bits to it along the way, including a new prologue for the Broadway production. But we were afraid to add too much, afraid we'd spoil it." When the Civic Theatre received the rights and the score of JOSEPH to produce, we received the 1976-77 New York production version presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; this was before it ever was produced on Broadway. The Civic Theatre has worked hard to present JOSEPH to meet your expectations of the current Donny Osmond and Michael Damian versions. I gra ciously thank the Civic Theatre staff for their long hours dedi cated to the creation of the new production: Bob, Louise, Rick, Schellie and Jonathan. For being on stage throughout the entire show, I thank all the volunteer actors and children's choirs and, of course behind the scene, the backstage crew. Two additional individuals that deserve special recognition for giving this JOSEPH a new look are Gary Lanier as my associate choreographer and Eunice Wadewitz for her long hours spent on updating and teaching the music. Thank you one and all! c

*- IS In a cooperative effort with local schools, IN THE WINGS stages IN THE WINGS special performances of upcoming Civic Theatre productions at no cost to students. Free tickets also are offered through many Soars nonprofit social service agencies. Each year an average of 3,600 free tickets are distributed, and, since 1988, more than 39,000 Allen County students, their parents and teachers have benefited. "We hope IN THE WINGS ignites a spark that lights the imagina tion," says Phillip Colglazier, Civic Theatre's education director. 'The imagination is a powerful tool we all have but don't always use. IN THE WINGS is a way for teachers, parents and performers to help children kick-start their imaginations." While special performances are at the heart of the program, related activities complement the live theatre experience. Volun teers conduct backstage tours and post-performance "talkback sessions," where students can comment on what they have seen and ask questions of performers. For additional information on IN THE WINGS and how you can participate, call Phillip Colglazier at 422-8641.

1995-1996 IN THE WINGS program is funded in part by grants from the following: Time Corners Lions Club Foellinger Foundation, Inc. Magnavox Electronic Systems Co. Lincoln National Corporation Employees Gift Committee Fort Wayne National Bank—Wilson Family Foundation
