Morton does not even mention the film, or the Australian speech therapist who helped the nervous new king overcome his stammer, Lionel Logueto whom Cadbury devotes more than ample 17 Carnations: The Windsors. Cadbury is a former BBC producer, Morton a sometime red-top royal reporter. But his is the more compelling account of a murky episode about which neither the government nor the royals of the day wanted you to read. If so, he was in good company. Was Windsor plotting against his homeland? After a childhood miserable enough to render him a suicidal depressive, it was his own decision to ruin his life, wrongly assuming he could retain 17 Carnations: The Windsors plush royal lifestyle after disclaiming his birthright. Even so, he was banned from returning to England because George VI remained scared of being upstaged by his more confident, glamorous brother. In fact, Simpson seems to have been more of an avaricious harpy, never in love with the hapless man so inexplicably besotted with her. All four surviving Windsor brothers and their wives, meanwhile, not to mention their numerous siblings and cousins among the enemy, proved the very paradigm of the Nazis and the Cover-Up dysfunctional family. Baldwin or I? Given the overwhelming logic for an elected head of state in this self-styled democracy, these revelations of the genetic flaws in the family still occupying that hereditary national role will do nothing to aid the royal cause. Meticulously researched, 17 Carnations chronicles this entanglement, starting with Hitler's early attempts to matchmake between Edward and a German noblewoman. While the German foreign minister sent Simpson 17 carnations daily, each one representing a night they had spent together, she and the Duke of Windsor corresponded regularly with the German elite. Known to be pro-German sympathizers, the couple became embroiled in a conspiracy to install Edward as a puppet king after the Allies were defeated. After the war, the Duke's letters were hidden in a German castle that had fallen to American soldiers. They were then suppressed for years, as the British establishment attempted to cover up this connection between the House of Windsor and Hitler. Drawing on FBI documents, material from the German and British Royal Archives, and the personal correspondence of Churchill, Truman, Eisenhower and the Windsors themselves, 17 Carnations reveals the whole fascinating story, throwing sharp new light on a dark chapter of history. Andrew Morton is one of the world's best-known biographers and a leading authority on modern celebrity as well as royalty. His groundbreaking biography revealed the secret world of Diana, Princess of Wales. Written with her full, though then secret, cooperation, the book changed the Nazis and the Cover-Up way the world looked at the British royal family. The winner of numerous awards, he divides his time between London, Hollywood and Manhattan. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use. For many years the The Nazis and the Cover-Up of Windsor evoked the sympathy not only of 17 Carnations: The Windsors British people but of historians throughout the world pariculaly as he gave up the throne to marry an American divorcee. However Andrew Morton's well researched book lays bare not only the unsuitability of the Duke of Windsor as the British Monarch but 17 Carnations: The Windsors his links with Hitler's Germany, even after hostilities with Britain were underway. The profligacy of the Duke and Wallis Simpson are also exposed by the author where the couple lived lives in luxury when the average British citizen was struggling with German bombing and stringent food rationing. It reinforced the view held by many that it was providential that his younger brother acceded to the throne at that tumultuous time in British history. An excellent and well researched account of the life of the eldest son of George V. One person found this helpful. Behind the scenes scandal, lies and petulance. Privilege does not the Nazis and the Cover-Up one good. No matter how far the Nazis and the Cover-Up the ladder, we are all human. The Windsors, spoiled 'children' though they were, displayed all the traits that are common in man. How much of their later actions were 17 Carnations: The Windsors spite, however? This book deserves to 17 Carnations: The Windsors read. Having been born the year Edward abdicated I was very interested to read this well written and to me absorbing piece of literature. I know he was adored by the public as a young prince and king but had no idea how unrealistic his expectations of the outcomes of abdication were. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in recent British history. It's not easy to add to the large amount of writings about this fascinating struggle within the house of Windsor when the Royal Archives have done their best to remove the details from public view. However, I found Morton's account tantalisingly took the reader closer to the truth than most other s have been able the Nazis and the Cover-Up achieve. The role played by the women, the Queens Mary the Nazis and the Cover-Up Elizabeth, in their detestation of Mrs Simpson is always fascinating. The reader is left with little doubt that Edward was weak, extremely naive and gullible to the approaches from the Nazis. Had he not abdicated the World may well be in a different shape right now. I've read Andrew Morton's books before and am happy to say they are well researched 17 Carnations: The Windsors comprehensive. The book, while being factual is 17 Carnations: The Windsors full of gossipy tidbits and famous names of those who probably would not appreciate being mentioned even at this time in History. But good on Morton for doing it. What a cover up and yet so much of it played out in the public eye! A good read. An extremely interesting book until just over half-way. Then the story goes into endless detail about 'The Windsor File' together with heresay, speculation and no definitive conclusion. The author has certainly done his research but the endless referencing becomes tedious after a while and I found myself skipping several pages at a time. I resisted reading this book because of the "Diana" factor in the author's credits. I was wrong and was rewarded with a well examined and articulated story of the myth of the monarchy that takes prisoners of monarchs and governments and leaves an unintended legacy for those who come after them. The book reads easily and I recommend it to those interested in this era and what could have happened if Edward had become a puppet king for the Third Reich. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This is a well-researched history of the uncrowned king's disgraceful dalliance with the Nazis, before and during the Second World War. It canters along at a good pace, leaving the reader wanting to know more until the last chapter. In the end, it is difficult to decide if the Duke's behavior was the result of him being simply stupid or highly treacherous as a means of 17 Carnations: The Windsors back at the country the Nazis and the Cover-Up had exiled him and denied him any formal role. Either way, he comes across as a selfish, vain and self-serving man, whose only real interest in life was his comfort, money, personal prestige and obsession with the Duchess. How lucky we were to have in his place King George VI and his queen, the Nazis and the Cover-Up together repaired the damage done to the monarchy by this wilfull 17 Carnations: The Windsors. A tad long-winded - but a fascinating look into the life of the ex-king. One imagines that 17 Carnations: The Windsors royal who gives up the throne should then live as an 'ordinary' citizen, D o W obviously wanted his cake and eat it too he wanted to give up 17 Carnations: The Windsors throne, still be treated like a royal, live a lavish lifestyle, not pay tax, and hope Hitler would give him back his throne with Wallis as queen.
