HELLENIC LEAGUE SUPPLEMENTARY CUP SPONSORED BY BLUEFIN INSURANCE SEASON 2018-19 Supplementary Cup - Winners Give Managers A Chance First Round 1998-99 Highworth Town Cirencester Town Dev 1 -3 Brackley Town Saints 1999-00 Carterton Town Didcot Town Dev - Chinnor By Alex Narey Easington Sports - Adderbury Park 2000-01 - Flackwell Heath - Royal Wootton Bassett Town It is now almost three years to the day since, on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon at Leicester City’s Lydney Town - Thatcham Town Dev 2001-02 Purton King Power Stadium, Jamie Vardy latched onto a Christian Fuchs through-ball before slotting a powerful Malmesbury Victoria - North Leigh United 2002-03 Didcot Town low drive past Manchester United’s David de Gea. The significance of the goal, which saw Vardy break Old Bradwell United - Highworth Town Res 2003-04 Brackley Town Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive matches, was clear evidence Reading City - Abingdon Town Shrivenham - Woodstock Town 2004-05 Hungerford Town of a footballer at the height of his powers. Thame Rangers - Chalvey Sports Thornbury United - Virginia Water 2005-06 Badshot Lea Vardy’s rise from such humble Non-League beginnings to the bright lights of the Premier League has Tuffley Rovers - Bourton Rovers been well documented. From Stocksbridge Park Steels, via FC Halifax and Fleetwood Town - England Tytherington Rocks - New College Swindon 2006-07 Ardley United recognition would follow off the back of his blazing run with Leicester City. Here was the ‘poster boy’ for Woodley United - Pewsey Vale 2007-08 Shortwood United what Non-League football could deliver. So much so, in fact, that scouts up and down the country are Second Round 2008-09 - now looking for that next gem; a player with a price tag that wouldn’t even be picked up on most Premier - - 2009-10 - League clubs’ balance sheets. - - 2010-11 Kidlington But while the new wave of Non-League stars continue to take their places in the higher leagues and - 2011-12 Reading Town beyond – former Kettering striker Calum Wilson’s call-up to the England squad being the latest example - of such – the lack of managers being given their chance remains a cause of major frustration. - 2012-13 Headington Amateurs - 2013-14 Brimscombe & Thrupp Scratch the surface and you can see some reasoning: if a club purchases a player for such a nominal - fee - even the £1 million Leicester City paid Fleetwood Town for Vardy’s services in 2012 - there is so - 2014-15 Hook Norton much to gain and so little to lose. But taking a manager from the lower leagues, who is expected to make - 2015-16 Fairford Town - a team gel and manage players’ egos, well that’s a different challenge. And, where such appointments - 2016-17 Ardley United are concerned, chairmen and board members don’t want any egg on their faces. - - 2017-18 Holyport That said, if Football League clubs could have a window into the work and lives of many Non-League - managers, they would see so many astute footballing brains that are complemented with the key ingredient needed for success: hard work. Yet still our managers are being ignored, and if they are given a chance, it is invariably with a club that is swimming against the tide. Paul Hurst’s recent ill-fated stint at Ipswich is a case in point. Despite a playing career where he chalked up to close to 500 games in the Football League with Rotherham United, Hurst cut his teeth in management in the lower leagues, working alongside Rob Scott at Ilkeston, Boston and Grimsby before taking the job with the Mariners on a full-time basis. He then moved to Shrewsbury before Ipswich came calling last May. With one of the lowest budgets in the Championship in a division that has become, pound for pound, arguably the toughest in Europe, the task at Portman Road was never going to be an easy one. It proved beyond Hurst, and now instead of celebrating the talents of a man who has gone from the Conference to the Championship in the space of two years, we are left scratching our heads as to when the next bright light from Non-League will be given the chance to shine. Managers deserve greater support and patience to progress their careers. Non-League football has been recognised as the perfect breeding ground for players who develop the right attitudes for the task ahead, but those players are learning from some of the game’s most aspiring young managers. Like Vardy, there are some golden nuggets out there… NEW 2018-19 Pyramid Poster! A return to league action saw a return to winning ways and also the start of a 10 game unbeaten run which stretched all the way to last Saturday. A narrow 1-0 home win over Windsor was followed by another close game in the Bluefin Insurance Challenge Cup as Bishops Cleeve saw off current league leaders Brackley Town Saints by the odd goal in 7. A 1-0 away win in the league at Binfield, never an easy place to visit as we well know, was followed by a 5-2 away win at Lydney in the Gloucestershire County Cup. Next up a 3-1 league win over Ardley as they made it 5 straight wins on the bounce. They maintained interest in the Bluefin Insurance Challenge Cup with a comfortable 6-2 home win over Kidlington Development before hitting another 6 goals, this time in the league away at Holmer Green, 6-1 the final score. They continued their high scoring form when they visited Lydney for the second time this season, hitting 5 without reply against their fellow Gloucestershire side. After 8 straight wins which had seem them score 31 goals, they finally dropped some points again in the league, this despite scoring another 3 goals, Virginia Water leaving Bishops Cleeve with a point following a 3-3 draw. Cleeve immediately returned to winning ways with a 3-1 away win at Shrivenham before suffering a shock defeat at home to Fairford on Saturday, Jody Bevan’s side inflicting a surprise 3-0 defeat on Cleeve. They will come here tonight no doubt keen to put that result behind them and it is going to certainly be a tough match here tonight if we are to continue our great home form this season which has seen us win 9 times in the league at the Gerard Buxton Ground. Danger Men – Former Longlevens striker Bradley Martin (14 goals), Elliott Kennedy (12) and Jack Watts (10) will be the three to watch for Bishops Cleeve this evening.
