Forsiden/front page:The founder of the Mycological Society of Fredrikstad: Thor Dybhavn, 60 years 23. February 1996. From the editor First of all , -we acknowledge very much the authors for their contributions to the present issue of AGARICA. We are especially pleased to introduce "guest-writers" from USA, Germany and Russia. This volume is mainly dedicated to Thor Dybhavn,- dentist by profession and foWlder of the Mycological Society of Fredrikstad ,- on the occasion of his 60th birthday February 23rd 1996. We are all grateful for his initiative in 1973 , which has created an active and progressive society, with more than 100 members, with a wide range of activities such as regular excursions and meetings,beginner-courses in mycology, special arrangements ,exhibitions, and close connections to the botanical institutions at Oslo University etc. In 1983,when our society ce1ebrated its 10th anniversary, Thor was rewarded with an honorary membership. Thor is an approachable and very involved person with an comprehensive knowledge of many subjects, for example wines, egyptology, politics, Zen, art, paleontology, mythology, parapsycology, rnilitary defence, and of course FUNGI ! And naturally, his love for books of all types is extensive. As to fungi, Thor is irrevocably comrnitted to Wilhelm Ramm (1921-1982),who may be regarded as his mentor and inspiration for his speciality: milk caps and Russula. However, Thor will be remembered, above all as the foWlder of the Mycological Society of Fredrikstad, and to extend our appreciation , we wish to celebrate this occasion with this extra large issue of AGARICA and offer him our very best congratulations on his 60th birthday. Hopefully, we may continue to take advantage of his extensive encyclopaedic knowledge in the future, not only fungi - but on many other topics. In the following pages the editor summarises the fungi-season 1995 and its events. 1995 was a year focused on biodiversity and the population of biological species. The editor refers to the estimates and future reflections by the works of the entomologist Terry Erwin, and the fungi-researchers D.L.Hawksworth (UK) and Richard P.Korf (USA).Quotations are provided. We finally acknowledge Dr.D.N.Pegler at the Royal Botanic Gardens,Kew, for permission to preprint his article on "The caterpillar fungus" .
