Memories And Conversations Until July 3 BBC Radio Scotland

BBC Scotland's Memories And Conversations season continues this week, exploring how the BBC archive can be used to help people with dementia share precious memories. A series of programmes looks at how drama, comedy and music as well as key news and sport events from yesteryear can help trigger long-term memories in people living with the condition. There's also analysis of the condition itself as presenters Kaye Adams and John Beattie speak to people who have different forms of dementia. More than a thousand photos, audio and video clips have been uploaded to a new interactive website being piloted on BBC Taster to sit alongside the five-week schedule of programmes. By visiting Your Memories (http://bbc.co.uk/taster/projects/your-memories), carers can type in basic biographical information about a person to create a personalised slideshow of pictures, music and video from the BBC to evoke memories of childhood and early adult life. Memories And Conversations is a collaboration between BBC Scotland, Alzheimer Scotland and the University of the West of Scotland. Highlights include Radio Recall on Tuesday 7 June and Inside Dementia on Wednesday 8 June, details below. • To find out more, go to the BBC Radio Scotland website and look for Memories And Conversations.

FRIDAY 10 JUNE TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 23 ______

Muck, Sweat and Steers: 40 Years of Landward  NEW Friday 10 June BBC Two Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm

As the Scottish rural affairs series turns 40, veteran Landward presenter Euan McIlwraith commemorates the occasion by delving into its unique archive and journeying across Scotland, in his beloved vintage Land Rover, to discover how the countryside has changed in the last four decades. As he discovers, new industries have emerged, technology has revolutionised farming, and the days of kids picking tatties have virtually disappeared in the years since Landward first appeared on BBC Scotland in 1976. He meets up with agricultural pioneers including James Jeffrey, father of former rugby star - ‘ the White Shark’ - John Jeffrey. Based near Kelso, in the Borders, James was one of the first Scottish farmers to import French ‘Charolais’ cattle. The big Charolais breed dwarfed the native cattle of the time, caused quite a stir, and ultimately revolutionised beef farming in Scotland. Euan also travels to Ardessie, near Ullapool to find out about the phenomenal growth in salmon farming and in North Aberdeenshire returns to the location of the very first feature he filmed for Landward, which was about a farmer making his farm more wild-life friendly. Euan also uncovers some of the more off-beat diversifications farmers have tried over the years, from snails, to ostrich and buffalo rearing. And he takes an emotional journey back to his darkest days of reporting, to the time of the Foot and Mouth crisis, with a visit to a farm near Lockerbie.
