INTRODUCTION

1,1 Background of the fTlining company-

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Limited, is a Central Public Sector undertaking, owned by the Govt of India, engaged for extraction of ... Coal in Jharkhand and West Bengal. BOCL was incorporated in January 1972 to operate coking coal mines in the Jharia &' Raniqan] Coalfields, taken over by the Govt. of India on 16th Oct 1971 to ensure planned development of the scare coking coal resources in the country. Nationalisation of the ·non-coking coal mines followed soon after in May 1973 when 182 non-coking unitslocated near to coking coal mines were also put under the control of BCCL. BCCL has 37 coal mines :which includes 11 underground, 19 opencast and 7 mixed mines as on 31st March 2018.

1.2 Location of End use Plants- The Moonidih mine is producing coking coal which is the critical input of steel sector. Presently, produced coal from the mine after washing in existing Pit head washery (1:6 Mty Capacity) goes directly to steel plants of SAIL by railway as per the existing linkage. After augmentation of production from this mine in future, washed coal will also be sent to steel sector to reduce the gap between demand and supply. Proposal for installation of a separate new washery of 2.5 Mty capacity is under progress within the iease hold area of the mine or near-by areas.

1.3 Brief on Moonidih Colliery

The Moonidih Mine is an existing underground mine under the administrative control of of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL). Mining operation started by NCDC 'before nationalization. As per the official record, the mine has lease hold area of 20.63 Sq.Km and it is situated in the south central part of the Jharia coalfield of Dhanbad District of Jharkhand State. The lease hold area of Moonidih mine includes three geological sectors namely Moonidih, Jar~a and Singra sector. It is included in the Survey of India Topo-sheet Nos. 73 1/5 & 1/6 (R.F 1:50000). This mine has been considered in Cluster-XI group of mines of BCCL. The mine is well connected by road. The Dhanbad-Chass section of the NH-32 passes through the north-western part of the block.

M 'd'h ." . d " a Technical ooru I Mine was designed in early {960's by Polish Consultants un er Collaboration for horizon mining system to produce coking coal from Seam XVIII to XV in descending order for a production of 2.1 Mty. However, the maximum production achieved was 1.2 Mty in the year 1988-89. This mine has been opened by two shafts . namely Shaft No.1 (depth 543.5m) and shaft No.-II (depth 560.7m) each of ·7.5m finished diameter and situated at 80m apart. Shaft-I is intake and Shaft-II is return air e shaft. Both the shafts are equipped with coal hoisting facility. From the shafts four, ~ horizons have been opened at 220m, ~Om, 400m and 500m and from these horizons, -. cross-cuts have been driven to interse~t seams. At present, 220m horizon is sealed. The 280m horizon is used for ventilating the old ventilation stoppings and workings near underqround strata bunker. The 400m and 500m horizons are being utilized for . . . ventilation as well as production, men & material transport. Out of these two horizons, production horizon is 400m horizon and pumping is done through.500m horizon. later- on, the mine capacity of the project has been derated to 1.5Mty (RPR Feb 1983).

The. Moonidih block is covered by the rocks of barren measure formation. The coal seams occur in descending order within the mine property are XVIII, XVII Top, XVII ' Bottom, XVI Top, XVI Bottom, XVI Combined, XV Top, XV Bot and XV Combined within the property. Except Singra sector, very few bore holes have been drilled upto lower seams in Moonidih & Jarma sector of Moonidih Block and hence geological parameter of virgin seams lying below XV seam in these two sectors are yet to be established and rt:Iay..~e~_ additional drilling for this purpose::'The XVIII ·seam· is the . topmost s~~m' ~nd.it has ~nd~r'g~neextensive pyrolitisation'wh~~e~~'in'J'~~rTlasector, the effect of pyrolitisation appears to be less. January 1965 at Ranchi and was subsequently approved by the Government vide letter No. C2-6(4)65 dated 19.11.1965. The shaft sinking of Moonidih Colliery was completed in 1967 and thereafter horizon development was commenced. The mine came under t~e fold of BCCL on 01.011.1975 from NCDC.

Coal mining in Moonidih mine started during 1971-72 under erstwhile government company NCDC. Subsequently, after nationalization, it came under the administrative control of BCCL.

After shaft sinking, different horizons in stone-;'t different levels were made to approach the coal seams. The first seam extracted was XVII (Top) seam. About 15 panels (T- series) were extracted manually during. the period 1974 to1980 and rest 15 panels (MUB series) were extracted by P.SLW sets. Thereafter, two panels(ML-VI series) .of seam XVII(Bot) were extracted in between the1988-1994. Extraction of panels(E- series) of XVI(Bot)'were in between year 1989-2004 and this seam has been worked to very limited extent by Bord & Pillar method innorth eastern part of the block. Panels (F- series) of XVI(Comb) seam were extracted during the period of 1992-2008. The - topmost XVIII seam panels(A-series) were extracted during the period 1994-2007. Extraction of panels (ML-II,IV & D series) of XVI(Top) was started in the year 1985 and it is being extracted till date. Presently, underlying XV seam has been developed only by developing initial drivages near shaft -I & II. In brief, Date of start of development work:- 1964 Date of start of production:- 1971-72 Seam-XVII (Top): July 1972 Seam-XVII (Bot): Nov 1975 Seam-XVI (Top): Jan 1976 Seam-XVI (Bot): April 1988 Seam-XVIII: Sept 1990 XV Seam: Jan 2006 (Dev.in limited area near shaft)

The first fully mechanized self-advancing powered support longwall equipment set in this mine was installed in 1978 in Panel ML-1I1 of XVII(Top). Earelier all the T-series panels of this seam were extracted manually. The extraction of panels in different
