  • Black House Is One of the Most Recognizable Gyms in MMA, but a Day Spent at Their L.A
MMA LIFE Black House is one of the most recognizable gyms in MMA, but a day spent at their L.A. lo- cation showed that the team’s practice space is more than just offices and heavy bags. It’s also a crash pad. BY T.R. FOLEY // PHotoS BY miKE lee uilherme Trindade emerges from a lofted room in the rear of the Black House Gym. He’s a tall fighter, weighing about 180 pounds, and like many of the cardboard cutouts that line the hallways, he’s Brazilian. Black House is a unique place for fighters to visit. It’s not a public gym— Gthere are no membership cards or fancy T-shirts for sale, and your girl- friend can’t take kickboxing classes from the resident Muay Thai master. The gym is a repository of equipment used by a rotating roster of MMA badasses. For Trindade, it’s also become home. “Ed, he tells me I fight in November. Now, me and my wife, we live in the gym,” says Trindade. “I win, and then we’ll see what happens. I might stay until December.” He takes me into the back room where his wife is cleaning the dishes after a meal of noodles and grilled chicken that she prepared on an electric skillet. The room, like all the walls of the gym, is painted flat black. There are no windows, but natural light pours in from exposed space between the top of the lofted wall and the 25-foot industrial-size roof. Trindade and his wife have made the space livable—there are knickknacks on the stove and a computer charging on their bed—but they’re a young couple, and any marital-life privacy would require a clean sweep of the building.

  • The 1980 MBM CHARGERS of Professor Horacio “Junbo” Borromeo Ph.D
The Thirty-Year AIM Jubilarians: The 1980 MBM CHARGERS of Professor Horacio “Junbo” Borromeo Ph.D. Compiled and written by Gel Tamayo Edited by Gen. Vic Batac MBM 1980 1 “A fool sees an enemy. A wise man sees a lesson to be learned.” -Mahatma Gandhi 2 The Thirty-Year AIM Jubilarians We are presenting this collective article anchored on several parameters, among which are: our privilege to reminisce on our two-year sojourn; our Alumni ideas about AIM; and our “pass-in-review” as MBM 1980 Cohort. Lest we be misunderstood, allow us to clarify at the onset that, in this write-up, like in a “talk-show magazine”, we do not intend to demonstrate ersatz bravado or brazen braggadocio. We simply want to reminisce those days in AIM as young, carefree people of that era, then release little bragging rights in a good light, and tell the truth as we saw and experienced it. We also wish to put in proper perspective that, given a sampling of people, a number, in the course of human existence, would tend to have a bit more in life. Expectedly, some would become Chairmen, CEOs, COOs, CFOs, CMOs or CIOs of reputable business conglomerates, while others would turn to be “successful” entrepreneurs. Some would have less in ranks, titles and net assets. C’est le vie. What is important to us, MBM Cohort of 1980, is one’s inner growth as a person, and that one is always willing to get back on track and move forward in life. We have no desire to irresponsibly compare each other, or insinuate about another’s plight.

The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 107: Jocko Willink Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: Microphone check. Jocko, how are you, sir? Jocko Willink: I'm doing pretty good. How are you? Tim Ferriss: I'm feeling splendid, especially given this cocktail of adrenaline that you’ve been feeding me. Hello ladies and germs. This is Tim Ferriss and welcome to another episode of the Tim Ferriss show where it is my job to deconstruct world class performers, whether they are chess prodigies like Josh Waitzkin, actors and governators like Arnold Schwarzenegger, or anything in between, professional athletes; you name it, I want to talk to them because you find that at the very highest level, at the top of the top in each field, and across those fields their commonalities. And I want to tease out the morning routines, the habits, the favorite books and so on that you can apply immediately to your life to level up. And this episode is now exception. This episode was a very intense episode. My guest is someone who very rarely does any interviews, Jocko Willink, J-O-C-K-O. He is a legend in the SEAL community. He’s also 240 pounds or so, 230 to 240 pounds of lean muscle. He would routinely tap out 20 or so Navy SEALS as a workout since he’s a Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner at a world class level, and also trains professional MMA fighters in his spare time. But dialing back to the beginning, Jocko grew up in a small New England town, enlisted in the Navy after high school and spent 20 years in the SEAL teams.

BJJ is, first and foremost, a martial art, but still, it has the potential to do more in changing diet, exercise, and general health practices than most doctors’ appointments—ask anyone who’s lost a significant amount of weight, or changed the way the approach stress since they started training. I am a firm believe that Brazilian jiu jitsu, in its many offerings, is a part of the healthcare industry—and that it can do more.
