Volume 20, Number 31 Thursday, August 12, 2004 Meddling into Metalsmithing by Paula McHugh Cynthia Hicks recently opened her studio on Franklin Street to us for a peek at her jewelry-mak- ing process. Cynthia, along with about a dozen other members of the Southern Shore Art Association, claim the second floor at 722 Franklin for individual work spaces—a compact little art colony provided by their landlord, Arnold Besse of Prince Galleries. Cynthia wanted us to see what the process of mak- ing fine pieces of jewelry is like. Most of us who attend art fairs and who linger in the fine jewelry booths have never been inside a jewelry-maker's studio to glimpse the tools and the labor (or play) involved. A vision of an artist's studio usually conjures up an easel, paint pots and a palette. Cynthia's studio, on the other hand, is filled with apparatus that you might at first associate with a handyman's garage work- bench. The tools of Cynthia's craft consist of vises, drills and bits, buffers, hammers, saws, a diamond wheel, a rolling mill, a polisher, grinder, bench shear, bar- rel tumbler, pickling solution, wire in various sizes, Cynthia Hicks welcomes us to her Pink Whale Studio on Franklin Street files, findings, solder, a gas torch, sheets of copper, sil- in downtown Michigan City. ver, and gold and other metals, stones, found objects, rings—are all one of a kind. The gift comes from the estate of Jack D. Finley, a former art gallery owner who grew up in the Bloomington area. Gregg Hertzlieb, director of the Brauer Museum, said the Finley Collection is a major addition to the museum and especially enhances the Brauer’s hold- ings of Indiana artists. The Brauer Museum will hold a special exhibi- tion of the Finley Collection from April 20-Aug. 14, 2005. Among the works donated to the museum are a vibrant landscape “Brown County Studio” by T.C. Steele (1847-1926), and “Peace of Snowclad Hills,” by Frank Dudley (1868-1957), which shows the Indiana Custom Dunes during winter. The gift also includes paintings and drawings by Shutters Adam Emory Albright, Clarence L. Ball, C. Riggin and captains, Jon and Annie (Mahle) Finger, our imaginings have been replaced by soul reenergizing memories. Our primary intention was to reunite three old friends. Two who reside in Northern Indiana and one who has made a life on the coast of Maine. Tom Pendergast lives in South Bend with his wife Janine and their six lovely and vibrant daughters. I, (Jack Van Etten), share my life with my wife Celeste here in Michigan City. The third comrade, Jon Finger, has made a home, with his wife Anne and their two effervescent daughters, miles from where we three met and grew up.

The J. & E. Riggin. The Riggin, boasting four thousand square feet of sail is a true “Windjammer”; she sports no gas or diesel power. Nor is she afflicted by the noise or smells of such abominations. Captain Jon Finger, a of a “Coast Guard” education knows the importance of safety, so he designed and built a ‘Yawl Boat’ that packs a low-geared, high-powered punch. A Yawl

A brief clarification, the three of us were most likely accompanied by Jon’s broth- er Larry and Jeff Ball who lived three doors down from me. We frequently had a boat at our disposal, stinkpots and rag-baggers alike. The times when we could not lay our hands on watercraft, inner tubes became our platforms of fun. Riggin Reunion Continued from Page 13 We enjoyed culinary feasts prepared fresh with a compassion for food and a love of cooking. On our cruise we sampled, to our fulfillment, dishes made with lobster, lamb or chicken. Fresh salads were accompanied by homemade dressings; my favorite is “Mom’s Blue- Cheese Vinaigrette”. Lunch was served al fresco, diverse and delicious. Breakfast was homemade blub- bery-pancakes, sausage, hot biscuits and eggs, scram- bled with just the rite spices and for verity; a scrump- tious quiche was brought forth. The dessert menu would leave no sweet tooth wanting. Fresh fruits served over homemade cakes dolloped with ‘hand-whipped’ cream. A decadently chocolate and walnut concoction called ‘Congo Squares’, (the recipes can be found in Anne’s cook book), sev- ered with coffee. Somehow, even a cup of ‘joe’ tastes better aboard ship.

Captains John & Anne (Mahle) Finger and mates Chloe and Ella.

It is now ten o’clock aboard the Riggin; quiet time. I remain on deck awhile to stargaze and listen to the sounds of the water and the shore near by. Totally relaxed and satisfied that all is well with the world, I descend the latter to my cabin. I climb into my bunk and sleep comes extraordinarily easy. Aboard the J. & E. Riggin, the gentle and rhythmic rocking, will easily lull anyone to sleep. Her eyes closed, Dorothy clicks her heels and repeats, “There’s no place like home”. My good friend, Captain Jon P. Finger, clicked his topsiders and now makes his life, at home, on the sea. Information about the J. & E. The order executed, a new tack taken and we three resume reminiscing. Our monopolization of Captain Jon is over for the time being, other guests wish to steer the Schooner and drink in the picturesque experience. No worry, we’ll anchor latter under the stars and recollect the past and imagine the future. Anchored in a natural harbor, the deck lit only by oil-lamps, our two captains initiate the entertain- ment. Anne’s soothing voice is accompanied by the accom- plished guitar strokes of her husband Jon. They sing sea chanteys, old favorites and some modern tunes; a song for every taste. It’s not long before their stage gives way to an impromptu sing-a-long. “I see the moon, the moon sees me!” The Riggin at anchorage. THE August 12, 2004 Page 15

Harbor Country venues. That is simply because she is a true daughter of the rural countryside beyond the harbor. The daughter of hard-working Three Oaks dairy farm- ers, Jerry and Nancy Koebel, Carolyn is the youngest of their four children with Jerry, Terry, and Cathy pre- ceding her in birth. Although she now lives and works in Kalamazoo, Carolyn says her early life on the Koebel Farm ultimately formed her for a career in music. She explained all that and more recently in a free- ranging interview at the avant-garde Caffe Casa on the mall in downtown Kalazmoo. Sipping a Chai topped with foamed milk, she admitted that she had never actually drummed on one of the family’s dairy cows, but allowed as how a cow could provide perfect percussion. REMEMBER WHEN A COTTAGE WAS A COTTAGE? Karen Conner does. It’s what drew her to New Buffalo 20 years ago. And what she’s building again, for people who think a nice little place in the country should be just that. Simple and rustic on the outside. Airy and elegant on the inside. Out in the woods, on a private drive 5 minutes from the lake. Without the pool, the playgrounds, and everything else you want to get away from. That’s Karen’s idea of a perfect vacation home. If it’s yours, give her a call to find out how to get one of your own.

n exciting event occurred on Saturday, July 31, 2004— the unveiling of Mitch Markovitz’s original painting titled “Sheridan Beach, It’s About Time.” The event took place under a large white tent at the corner of Colfax and Lake Avenue. Approximately 100 people came between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to help celebrate the occasion and see for themselves what was happening. As I was trying to find the right place after I parked my car, I saw a group of people walking along Lake Shore Drive. I asked a woman dressed in yel- low if she knew the location. Jeanne Pokorny said, “We’re going there; follow us. In fact, my husband, Sidney, was the inspiration for the painting.” A block and a half later, we were there! Jeanne with her family and friends found good seats to wait for the unveiling. Her tablemates included Philip Dreifuss, (l to r) Mitch Markovitz, his father Robert, and cousins Lynette & Alan Putterman. Marilyn Pokorny, Darlene & Harvey Pokorny, Arwen & Brian McAdorv, Jacquie & Robert Markovitz, Mitch Mitch himself said, “Their house has always been Markovitz, and Juliet Shavitz. Jeanne added, “ We lived open to us and because of that, we were able to keep in Chicago for over 50 years. My husband, Sidney, was coming back. She said, “The nostalgia of Sheridan Beach is that we always come back here and remind ourselves that Sheridan Beach, Michigan City, and Lake Michigan are the best. We are neighbors and it is the most beautiful place in the world to be. Congratulations to everyone involved in this wonderful project; I am glad to be here!”

Artist Mitch Markovitz speaks to those present. Mitch Markovitz said he has been visiting the area since he was three. He said, “We wondered how long it would take us to do “It’s About Time.’ My answer is ‘Thirty-three years.’ There’s a lot of anguish The crowd waits for the unveiling. Markovitz Continued from Page 29 involved in it. Fifty years ago, we would stay at a hotel, visit the Teapot Inn, or other places. The beach was so hot that you could hardly walk on it, but, of course, you did. We would go to the Hickory Pit and then we would make our way through to Scholl’s for ice cream. At the end of the evening, my Dad and I would go in the car to the 11th Street Station and wait for the train. Then we would race it down the street. I always thought that the conductor had a great job. I moved to Wisconsin for several years. In 1981, we had the opportunity to stay at the cottage of our friends, the Pokornys. That moved me to come back here. When new management bought the South Shore line, they hired me as advertising manager and art director. I went into the train service; at my age, I wanted to be an engineer because I wanted to see things and to sit down. About 8:30 in the evening, a car would come along- side the train and the kids would be hanging out the window and waving at me. South Shore posters got a lot of renown in the area. The magic of the posters is that they stood out like a face in the crowd.” Mitch continued, “ A few years ago, Mike Conner told me he wanted me to come out here and paint a poster. I said I would be happy to come paint a poster and take him out to lunch. I wanted to dedicate the poster to the memory of Sidney Pokorny. In Knox, where I live, there is a gallery owned by Angelique and Max Milo where they have top-of-the-line crafts- manship, which you might expect in Chicago. Angelique is here today.” Finally, there was the unveiling of the various types and sizes of the painting, “It’s About Time.” History was in the making; all of Mitch’s paintings and Sheridan Beach would still be here fifty to sixty years from now, even though many things would not remain. Next there was time for questions, more music and refreshments, and the signing and purchasing of the paintings.

Various types and sizes of “It’s About Time” by Mitch Markovitz. Prices for the paintings are: $125 for 11 inches by 16 inches on watercolor paper; $350 for 20 inches by 30 inches on canvas; and $450 for 26 inches by 39 inch- es on canvas. Canvas editions stretched on artist’s stretchers will be an additional $45. Mike Conner told me, “I think it’s wonderful that everybody came out today and supported the art work presented here. Sheridan Beach Realty will have the paintings after today. Also they will be available at Mitch Markovitz’s web site, which is www.mitchmarkovitz.com.” They can also be ordered at The Framing Station, 912 And then the signing and the sellling. HEART ATTACKS HAPPEN

She was more than just my grandmother, she had given me a lifetime of lessons and a lifetime of love. When I was told she had terminal heart disease and there was nothing more to be done, I knew I needed to spend as much time with her as I could. The 45 minutes I had to spend driving to the hospital were precious moments I could have spent by her side. Having a Heart Center in our community means others will be able to spend less time on the road, and more time saying goodbye. That recipe is also below. Too, Pat handed us Weight Watchers chocolate peanut butter bars - like old fashioned fudge, only better. I can e- mail you that recipe if you’d like. [email protected]. We are one happy supper club. Coming up next? Well, we decided since we’d visited each of the five-stars own dining rooms to date, that its now time to go OUT to eat. Mid-September, we’ll head for Chicago’s Millennium Park and perhaps their outdoor café for lunch instead of the usual marvelous supper. Sounds like fun, right? You’ll hear all about it, Foodstuff readers.

Gloria, the perfect hostess Gloria provided lots of goodies, along with a pitch- er of iced Cosmopolitans (yum!) - among the dishes, the popular asparagus bundles repeated from our last get-together (that recipe was in the Beacher some weeks ago), a lovely crab mousse to dabble onto crackers. Shirlee Anderson’s tomato tart was a tremendous hit. You’ll find the recipe below. She also brought stuffed eggs adorned with an olive slice - almost as big a hit as the tart. Mary Samelson, probably the most professional cook in our group of stars, carried in some stunning dishes. One was an artichoke bread, baked with cheese on top (recipe below). Another was sesame chicken wings that also made our mouths Mary Samelson, resting before the next plate water, just at a glance. And then she unwrapped pert little mushroom tarts. Sagurao Cactus However, one of our workshop writers from Wisconsin brought it all back with something she wrote, the begin- ning of a story about a little boy who walked past a field of sunflowers on his way to school. As the yel- low heads turned toward the sun, he thought they were looking at him to say hello as he went past in the morn- ing , and then turning toward him again on his way home. I loved the image. Those big smiley faces of sun- flowers greeting him as he passed by. Arizona has its own sunflowers that bloom in the spring and fall, small two-inch yellow flower heads on a slender, hairy stem from 1 to 3 feet high. Its name, Geraea, is from the Greek word for “old man” and refers to the white hairs on its fruits. You can find them in desert areas below 3,000 feet and that leaves out the mile-high alti- tude of Prescott. You don’t find the saguaro cactus grow- ing up this high, but the drive from Phoenix goes through stands of saguaro that always say Arizona. They should. The saguaro’s waxy white blossom is Arizona’s state flower and appeared on a US postage stamp in 1962. The saguaro cactus plods along, growing just an inch each year and can grow to 50 feet high. The biggest with more than 5 arms, can be 200 years old, and those spiny arms and ribs swell to collect water like an accordion allowing it to bloom each year and roots wrap around underground rocks as an anchor. Each stateroom has its own bath facilities. The Queen's designers allowed for storage of two personal watercraft and an inflatable tender. “There's room aft for U-shaped lounge seating around a table and a barbecue grill on the boat deck,” officials said. “The Hargrave is powered by a pair of 1,400 horse- power Caterpillar 3412 diesel engines providing a top speed of just over 22 knots. He is notable among contemporary film accompanists for his use of the 1920s-era jazz and blues, rather than classic ragtime, in playing for silent comedies. His improvisational ballet and dance accompaniment skills serve him well in developing music for dramas. He has performed at the Cinevent Film Festival in Columbus, , the Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (staff accom- panist since 1985), Silent Film Society of Chicago, the Museum of Art and the Cleveland Cinematheque. A successful creative venture since 1995, Blue Dahlia continues to expand its musical horizons. The group's body of work includes numerous recordings, live performance of original soundtracks for silent film, commercial soundtracking, artistic collaboration, and more. If you were wowed by last summer by the New Buffalo-based Front Porch Players’ debut perfor- mances of “Actions Speak Louder Than Words,” then you are in for a treat. That’s because the plucky band of young women under the steady direction of New Buffalo High School senior Michele E. Sagala, is bringing the Bard of Avon’s classic comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” to various local venues this summer. Specifically, the nine girls, who range in ages from 9 to 14, will be performing Michele Sagala’s adapta- tion of William Shakespeare’s 1595 play for the low- low price of absolutely nothing at the following: -Tuesday, August 17 at the New Buffalo Public Library at 33 N. Thompson at 7 p.m. (MI time); -Wednesday, August 18 at the Three Oaks Township Library at 3 N. Elm Street at 5 p.m. (MI time). They are also planning a performance at the Maud Preston Palenske Public Library in St. Joseph some- time in September. While they are not charging admission for their per- formances, the Front Porch Players do ask audience members to make free will offerings at the door. As was done last year, that money will be given to a char- The Front Porch Players pose on Michele Sagala’s front porch in New itable organization. Michele Sagala runs her Front Porch Players through a rehearsal of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” ciously allowed time for a short interview as her players prepared for a cast portrait on her porch. “This year we’re doing an adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” because I have such a great interest in Shakespeare. So I wrote an adaptation of his play back in May when I was 17. I condensed the play so our play just has the basic characters like Hermia, Helena, the fairies, Nick Bottom, Lysander, Demetrius, Puck, Oberon, and Titania. “It’s a basic story of two couples who fall in and out of love based on these little spells that are put on them. It has a lot of funny lit- tle moments, and we did a lot with the blocking to make it physically funny,” Sagala said. She added that the aging of her troupe made the play more inter- esting for her as a producer and director. “They’re getting more experience as they get older, Jenna Wojdula is doing ‘Godspell Jr.’ right now at Dunes Summer Theatre, and a couple of them have done plays at New Buffalo High School already. Katie Daniel and Madison Kemper were both in “Sound of Music” there, and many of them were also in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Two portraits of Nick Bottom as performed by Elise Campbell. “It’s interesting working with them as they’re growing in their tal- ent,” Michele said. “Hopefully I can fit this theatre into my schedule next summer and keep training them, and when they get older, I’ll hand it off to one of them.” Even though her long-term goal is to be an elementary school teacher and then principal, Michele promised that she will always remain active in theatre. That was good news to her cast, because as Katie Daniel said: “The play is so much fun, and Michele is the best director. I have fun hanging around with my friends. Michele has definitely inspired me to go into theatre.” Michele Sagala would dearly love to showcase her talented troupe this summer and fall at addition- al venues in Michigan City and welcomes calls and inquiries by phone at 269/469-9272 or by email at [email protected]. Meanwhile, please attend one of the free performances of the Front Porch Players’ production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” either at the New Buffalo Public Library on August 17 at 7 p.m. (MI time) or at the Three Oaks Township Library on August 18 at 5 p.m. (MI time). Off the Book Shelf by Sally Carpenter

Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett with illustrations by Brett Helquist “On a warm October night in Chicago, three deliv- eries were made in the same neighborhood. A plump tangerine moon had just risen over Lake Michigan. The doorbell had been rung at each place, and an enve- lope left propped outside.” I’m starting out this week with something for the younger crowd. How about a DiVinci Code for the kids? Intellectual mysteries seem to be the read of the moment, so why not include your 5th to 8th graders, too? Get them interested in art and history and think- ing analytically. Before you start laughing at my naiveté, let me explain. Chasing Vermeer incorporates all the aforementioned possibilities by cleverly disguising itself as a novel that is both interesting and easy to read, and it just might get your child out of their Harry Potter funk (movie’s over, next novel not out yet). Like Harry, Chasing Vermeer has characters that children can relate to while imagining themselves sharing in the adventures. Our heroes are Petra Andelee and Calder Pillay, two 11 year olds who live in the Hyde Park District of Chicago and go to the University School. Their teacher is anything but conventional. Instead of “opening your book to page 96”, she thinks up projects and asks questions to make the children think, investigate, and, ultimately, learn to love coming to class each day. The day after the aforementioned letters were delivered in Calder and Petra’s neighborhood, their teacher Ms. Hussey decided to talk about letters and how they can change someone’s life. Coincidence? Hmmm. The lesson about writing led to art and a trip to the Art Institute where a new exhibit was being readied that would include Johannes Vermeer’s A Lady Writing. But somehow, between and Chicago, the painting was stolen. How Petra and Calder get involved with the stolen art work and the mysterious letters is a series of.....what? coincidence? fate? or clever deductions by our two heroes? Petra has strange dreams, Calder has his penta- minoes (mathematical tools) that help him think, and both children are befriended by a strange old lady who lives in the neighborhood, and both believe that everything that has happened to them has a connection of some sort. The illustrations are great, and include a hidden message that can be figured out by the reader and even checked for accuracy at the Scholastic Press web site. Put it all together and you have a perfect present to hand to your child to read and enjoy and maybe even think about.....What a concept! Till next time, happy reading! THE August 12, 2004 Page 67
