Visitor Guide HARRISON COUNTY VISITOR GUIDE thisisindiana.org Indiana’s First State Capitol Wineries Horseshoe Southern Indiana Casino and Hotel Indiana Caverns Governor Hendricks’ Headquarters Harrison County Discovery Center , a picturesque destination with a lot to offer in southern Indiana. Whether traveling with children or adults, here you’ll strike the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, fun and learning, activity and indulgence. CAVES There’s more to scenic southern Indiana than what initially meets the eye—below rolling hills, beautiful forests, and rich farmland lies a network of caves containing Ice Age bones, underground streams, and fascinating biodiversity. Experience it for yourself on tours of Indiana Caverns, Marengo Cave, and Squire Boone Caverns. Tours are guided and the caves are easy to traverse (with steps), so all you need are comfortable shoes and a light jacket. The caves remain around 54 degrees year-round, making them a perfect activity for summer and winter alike. HISTORY Established in 1808, the town of Corydon served as Indiana’s first state capitol from 1816 to 1825, and is centrally located in Harrison County. This history is palpable when you walk the town’s storied streets, with most of the buildings dating to the 1800s. The Corydon Capitol State Historic Site tours include the capitol building and governor’s headquarters. Learn more about the area at the Harrison County Discovery Center, where you’ll find interactive, immersive displays for all ages featuring the area’s wildlife, natural science, and history—including a 360-degree projection of a reenactment of the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil, the Battle of Corydon. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Squire Boone Caverns Zipline Adventures offers the longest zip in the region. You’ll fly through the forest canopy and over beautiful valleys. Choose from tours lasting 1 ½ hours or 3 hours. A new way to fly will be coming to the area this spring with the addition of the Bat Chaser, an aerial coaster at Indiana Caverns, which will offer an experience unique to the area. O’Bannon Woods State Park is home to hiking and mountain biking trails. Unique features such as steep hills and deep ravines, limestone bluffs, caves and waterfalls can be found along the trails or within the park boundary, which is bordered on one side by the Ohio River. WINERIES You’ll find four wineries nestled throughout the lush foothills of Harrison County: Best Vineyards Winery and Distillery, Indian Creek Winery, Quibble Hill Winery, and Turtle Run Winery. Each invite visitors for tastings, tours, or conversation with a fellow wine enthusiast, and all are within a 30-minute drive. Scenic Indiana State Road 62 connects many of the wineries, and is a beautiful way to experience the scenery and small town charm of the area. HORSESHOE SOUTHERN INDIANA CASINO AND HOTEL Enjoy table games and slots, in addition to other amenities such as fine dining, shopping, a spa and frequent concerts. DOWNTOWN CORYDON DINING AND SHOPPING Visit Zimmerman Art Glass to see four generations of glassblowing expertise in action and pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir. The Artisan Center features ceramics, woodworking, and fine art from around the county available for purchase. Visit antique stores and boutiques. See the Shopping section of this guide for listings.     Southern Indiana's Recreational Triangle Thomas Frank Barton, Indiana University In Southern Indiana's Recreational Triangle are found not only most of the state-owned outdoor recreational facilities but also the physical potentials which, if developed, would enable this region to become not only the leading recreational area of the state but also one of the chief recrea- tional areas of the entire Ohio River watershed. It is urgent that these potentialities be recognized now and developed within the next ten years or some of the latent recreational assets may disappear. At this writing, October, 1961, the state- and national-owned recrea- tional facilities could be better coordinated. Some of the potentialities of this triangle apparently are not recognized or are neglected by local, state and national agencies. As far as the writer knows, the region presented has never been identified, bounded, named or characterized. In this paper the author wishes to call attention to the area and, if possible, contribute suggestions for the region's coordinated development. Although it is located, in part, in the depressed area of the state where there is a surplus of labor and an outward migrating population, here the natural resources of forest, water and recreation are underdeveloped. General Characteristics Boundaries. Southern Indiana's Recreational Triangle is bounded on the west by the Wabash River and on the south and southeast by the serpentine course of the Ohio River. Its non-river boundary is formed by drawing three straight lines: (1) the first connects the junction of the Indiana-Illinois state boundary and the Wabash River with Turkey Run State Park, (2) the second a short line connects the Turkey Run and Shades State Parks and (3) the third connects the Shades State Park and the junction of the Indiana-Ohio boundary and the Ohio River.

Martin Indiana Department of Natural Resources Indiana Division of Nature Preserves Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 Introduction More than eighteen years have passed since the inventory of natural areas was completed by Lindsey et al. (1). This inventory was statewide in scope, and as such, was one of the first of its type in the nation. The inventory was funded by a grant from The Ford Foundation. In the preface, Gordon Harrison of The Ford Foundation noted that the inventory provided a basis for assigning protection priorities, helped to prevent destruction of natural areas through inadvertence, and was intended as a guide for those able to work toward saving some of what was left. In the years following publication, its significance has been demonstrated. Today, 18 years later, over half of the 155 areas listed in the study have at least some measure of protection, and only a handful have been destroyed. Compilation The files of the Division of Nature Preserves provided the data for this report. Information in these files came from years of field surveying by Division staff and many other natural area workers. Results Each natural area listed in the main body of Lindsey et al.
