THE NEED FOR DIALOGUE

Why were Datan and Aviram punished in such a miraculous never-before-seen manner for rebelling against G-d and Moshe? Why specifically were they swallowed up by the earth?

Unlike the 250 leaders involved in Korach’s rebellion who went before Moshe to protest and were willing to meet with Moshe and voice their complaints, showing up the following day with incense pans, Datan and Aviram refused to appear before Moshe. Not only do they respond flippantly by accusing Moshe of bringing them out of Egypt to die in the desert, they bookmark their words with lo naaleh, we will not go up. This is the exact opposite of what Calev said last week in response to the other spies, aloh naaleh, that we will surely go up and conquer. This impudence and inability to learn from past mistakes or at the very least to be in dialogue seals their fate to be interred underground. Thank G-d our debates aren’t with as dire consequences as those in Korach but it is important to remember that showing up and remaining in dialogue can go a long way.

ANNOUNCEMENTS BAYT COVID-19 PROTOCOLS BAYT’s COVID-19 Protocols incorporate Health Canada and Province of Ontario guidelines by reference. Signing Up for a Minyan at BAYT Members wishing to attend an indoor minyan at BAYT need to sign up in advance via SignUp Genius. Minyanim are open to members only. Please only sign up people from your household. When you sign up to attend a minyan at BAYT, you expressly agree to strictly follow BAYT’s COVID-19 protocols without exception. Other shuls’ protocols are not relevant to your decision to attend a minyan at BAYT. Please cancel your sign up and do not attend minyan if you are unable to attend for whatever reason. Members wishing to attend an outdoor minyan at BAYT are asked to sign up in advance via SignUp Genius in order to ensure others of a minyan. While Attending a Minyan at BAYT

 Inside the BAYT, wear a face covering such as a non-medical mask (see below).

 Outside the BAYT, face coverings are highly recommended but not mandatory.

 Inside or out, maintain social distancing. Please do not congregate with others during or after davening. The serving of any food or beverages (e.g., Kiddush Clubs) is not allowed at this time.

 Do not crowd when leaving the building. Please leave single file and socially distanced 2 metres apart. Once outside BAYT, please walk away from the doors so others can leave quickly and safely.

 Avoid touching doors and door handles. Doors through which you need to pass are open. Please do not touch the doors, as you may cause them to close. If a door is closed, please let the facilities staff know.

 Sit in designated seating. In the main shul, sit only in seats marked with green tape on back of the seat. Please do not sit alone in a group of green taped seats. Do not move chairs around in other minyanim. When Not To Sign Up for or Attend a Minyan at BAYT 1. You or a “close contact” are awaiting a COVID test result; 2. you were in “close contact” with someone who tested positive for, or has any symptoms of COVID-19; 3. you were in “close contact” with anyone in self-isolation (even if asymptomatic) including anyone in your household. This includes children in self-isolation due to a COVID-19 case in school or a carpool; 4. you have been outside of Canada within the past 14 days; 5. you were around others (e.g., workplace, other minyan or gathering) and did not practice proper social distancing and/or masking, even once, within the past 14 days; or 6. you feel unwell or have any acute illness, even if you or your doctor do not believe you have COVID-19.

“Close Contacts” Include 1. Someone with whom you have been within 2 metres for more than 10 minutes; 2. Someone who lives in your household or provides care to you; 3. Someone with whom you have had close physical contact including a handshake; or 4. Someone who accidently coughed, sneezed or spit on you while talking with you.

If you or a “close contact” have any common symptoms of COVID-19, please get a COVID test, STAY HOME, self-isolate and advise “close contacts” with whom you were in close physical contact with in the prior 48 hours to monitor their health and to self isolate. Do not sign up for or attend a minyan.

Face Coverings (Such as Non-Medical Masks) The Province of Ontario Emergency Order requires the use of “a face covering (non-medical mask, such as a cloth mask) in public indoor spaces and whenever physical distancing is a challenge.” with limited exception. Upon entry into and while inside BAYT everyone must wear a face covering such as a non-medical mask, including the ba’al tefillah (who leads prayers) and ba’al korei (who layns from the sefer Torah). Remember others may not have had a first or second vaccine. Health Canada advises that a “non-medical mask or face covering” should:

 fit securely to the head with ties or ear loops;

 maintain its shape after washing and drying; ANNOUNCEMENTS

 be made of at least two layers of tightly woven material (such as cotton or linen); and

 be large enough to cover the nose and mouth completely and comfortably without gaping. Any type of plastic face shield or mouth/nose covering by itself does not replace a face covering or mask because it does not completely cover the nose, mouth and chin with a barrier that prevents spread of respiratory droplets. If you choose to wear either a plastic face shield or mouth/nose covering, you also need to wear a mask made of at least two layers of tightly woven material large enough to completely cover your nose and mouth without gaping. The sole purpose of BAYT’s COVID-19 Protocols is to keep our members and guests as safe as possible while at BAYT. At this time, BAYT cannot permit exceptions to our COVID-19 Protocols including our masking requirements, even for those fully vaccinated. Family and Guests Returning to or Entering Canada (even if partially or fully vaccinated) Travellers returning to Canada still must quarantine for 14 days whether arriving by air or road, whether they have been vaccinated, had a COVID infection or a negative COVID test result. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) advises all travellers upon entry to Canada that they must completely isolate during their 14-day quarantine period from anybody else in their household. If complete isolation is not possible, they are advised that other household members must also quarantine for the entire 14 days. If you have anyone in your household returning to or entering Canada from abroad who are or will be in mandatory 14-day self- isolation, please do not sign up for or attend a minyan at BAYT unless they are completely isolated from the rest of your household for the entirety of the 14 days quarantine period. This applies even if he/she has been vaccinated, had a COVID infection or a negative COVID test. Common Symptoms of COVID-19 Per the Ontario Ministry of Health

 fever (feeling hot to the touch, a temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius or higher) or chills

 cough that's new or worsening (continuous, more than usual)

 barking cough, making a whistling noise when breathing (croup)

 shortness of breath (out of breath, unable to breathe deeply)

 sore throat, difficulty swallowing

 runny, stuffy, or congested nose (not related to seasonal allergies or other known causes or conditions)

 lost sense of taste or smell

 pink eye (conjunctivitis)

 headache that is unusual or long lasting

 digestive issues (nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain)

 muscle aches

 extreme tiredness that is unusual (fatigue, lack of energy)

 falling down often

 for young children and infants: sluggishness or lack of appetite.

Report Illness and Positive COVID Test Results to BAYT Immediately If you attended a minyan at BAYT, please let us know immediately if you receive a positive COVID-19 test result or if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and are awaiting a test result. BAYT will notify York Public Health of positive COVID cases brought to our attention. Two or more positive COVID test results among attendees of one minyan at BAYT can result in declaration of a legal “outbreak” by York Region Health mandating ALL persons who were in attendance self-isolate for 14 days, even those who practiced proper social distancing and masking.

I am humbled when people tell me they look forward to my weekly message. Last week, I wanted to offer a few words on Parshat Shelach and the sin of the spies. Better late than never. Way back in the Bush years (the first Bush that is), a law school internship with the state public defender agency brought me to interior Alaska. Most of our cases pled out before trial. But one case involved a serious felony charge for an otherwise clean 18-year-old high school graduate. His crime, calling in a bomb threat or in legal jargon, making a false report. We had to go to trial. The local high school had been receiving phone calls advising of a bomb in the building. The authorities traced the last such call to a gas station attendant’s booth across the street from the school. When State Troopers arrived and questioned the attendant, she pointed to a young man sitting on a nearby grassy patch she had just dialed a number for and had handed the phone. A serious charge for a stupid prank. And a guilty conviction with lasting repercussions. I hear chatter all the time. About me. About our Rav. About our shul. Chatter can be based on facts mischaracterized or simply lost in translation. Chatter can be based on partial truths or whole truths manipulated or completely taken out of context. Chatter can morph from a mistake. Or chatter can be just plain untrue, just like those bomb threats. Whatever the shade, chatter often equates to nothing more than a false report. Ignoring chatter can be difficult particularly when, like that gas station attendant, one knows the truth first-hand. But not ignoring chatter takes away precious time and energy from more constructive endeavors. Sometimes others cannot ignore chatter. When that happens, reality often winds up calling into question the truth and veracity of the source more than anything else. Ohr Yosef’s lease with BAYT expired last August. BAYT did not evict the Kollel. The Kollel has had an interim home for some time and is working to build a permanent home at Eitz Chaim school. Neither the Kollel nor BAYT started the rumour, but we collectively understand its origins. BAYT wishes the Kollel much continued hatzlacha. We look forward to implementing a joint night seder for BAYT members in the fall. And when my second term is over, Rabbi Goldman and I hope to resume our . It has been almost a year since my last ‘state of the BAYT’ update. It is coming. In the void, rumours of BAYT’s impending financial demise circulated. I plan to disprove the chatter when we present our final audited financial statements for 2020 to the Board next Wednesday and then with you. While our results look better than expected and ahead of budget, you will see we still have a lot of work ahead of us. Shalom. Jeffrey M. Brown, President ANNOUNCEMENTS

WEEKLY HALACHAH

Am I obligated to cover my challah during kiddush, if kiddush is actually being recited at another table?

We cover the challah while kiddush is recited, for at least these three reasons: 1. Technically, the berachah on bread should precede the berachah on wine/grape juice, and we leapfrog the bread inappropriately by reciting kiddush first. Therefore, we cover the bread, so that it is not in front of us for kiddush. [This is tied to the idea of not "shaming" the bread by having it witness the recitation of kiddush.]

2. The two challot at our Shabbat meals commemorate the man which fell for our ancestors in the wilder- ness, and that man was covered, above and below, by layers of dew. (Shemot 16:13, Bamidbar 11:9) Therefore, we place the challah on a plate or napkin, and cover it.

3. Out of respect for Shabbat, we wait for its kiddush before bringing out the food.

Even if kiddush is recited in another part of the room, the second and third reasons for covering still apply, and so the challah should be covered.

(Pesachim 100b; Yoma 75b; Sheiltot Yitro 54; Tur Orach Chaim 271; Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 271:9, Rivivot Ephraim 1:200)

D’VAR TORAH FOR PARSHAS KORACH

In Parsha Korach, Korach bring forth a complaint against Moshe Rabenu, saying that Moshe has too The entire complaint was stem by his desire to help in the Bais " רב לכם" -many responsibilities Hamikdash and have a equal or similar role of power. However, he let his jealousy overshadow his actual goal and made it a political war by attacking Moshe Rabenu and his roles, instead of stating his wants and desires to help on a more elevated level.

We can learn from this not to take our ambitions and goals and blame others for not reaching them. Since when we put others as the reason for not reaching our goals we actually loose sight of them since our whole focus becomes zoned in on the person who reached it. We cannot achieve anything in life if we remain fixed on what others have and let our jealousy take control. May we all be zoche to achieve our goals and not be blocked with unnecessary obstacles.

Have a good Shabbos,

Moshe Bitton
