FALL 2019 Newsletter September-October 2019

Highlander Highlights Letter from Julie S. Lee, Principal Hello Shadle Park Families, We launched an earlier Homecoming Week of September 16 – 20 this year. The “Out of this World” theme proved to be a great way to welcome back current students and loyal alumni. Students and staff enthusiastically participated in the Spirit Dress Up Days and decorated their advisory classroom doors with themes that hinted of space exploration, astronomy and more. Our 2nd Annual Distinguished Alumni ceremony kicked off the week with a special recognition of SPHS Class of 1976 Graduate Mr. Scott Morris who is CEO and President of Avista Corporation and SPHS Class of 1970 Graduate Ms. Kris Lindeblad, retired mathematics teacher of 30 years from Shadle Park High School and nationwide math educator. Our Distinguished Alumni’s portraits will hang in the Commons above the Longfellow entrance. The Character Strong Curriculum which supports social and emotional learning standards is a big hit within our advisory program. Over the summer, 17 teachers redesigned the advisory curriculum at each grade level to become more relevant and engaging for students. Each student is assigned by their grade level to an advisor who meets with them weekly on Mondays after second period. Shadle Faculty are committed to ensuring that every Highlander has a sense of belonging and becomes personally connected with at least one adult at school. This curriculum already has had a positive impact on the culture of our school. When our students feel safe, supported, and part of a community, they will perform better, act INSIDE THIS ISSUE with more kindness, and want to show up to school each day. Below are some important TIPS to support academic success at Shadle Park this school year: Attendance is KEY: It is vital that ALL students attend ALL of their classes, every day, on-time. Research shows that consistent attend- ance in classes has a direct relationship with higher grades earned. PowerSchool Access: We highly recommend that students and families know how to login to PowerSchool and consistently stay current on grades, missing assignments, and attendance. If you do not know your login, please contact your counselor and we will be happy to assist you. Early Communication: Reaching out to your student’s teacher directly is the best way to get questions and concerns answered and ad- dressed. The earlier this communication begins, the quicker action can be taken to support your student. Our teachers’ classroom phone numbers and email addresses are available in the Directory on our Shade webpage.

Student Email and Digital Resources: Every student at Shadle Park has been assigned a student email account through Office 365. Many teachers send out information to these email addresses. Please remind your student of this FREE resource and encourage them to check their student email account on a consistent basis. You can find Office 365 and other digital resources availa- ble to ALL students here https://www.spokaneschools.org/domain/1496. Student logins have also switched to ONE single login through Clever. This login is how students can access these digital resources including the District network, Office 365 programs such as Outlook for email, and Blackboard. Our second annual Shadle Application Week is coming up October 22- 24 for all seniors! This is a unique opportunity for students to spend one class period completing one application of their choice. The application can be for college, university, trade schools, FAFSA, workforce, etc. Whatever aligns with their High School and Beyond Plan.

Students will be assigned a time to visit the library and work on their application of choice along side SP counselors and a variety of college representatives and program support individuals. We will be asking seniors to complete a checkpoint survey at our first Senior Class Meeting (Monday, September 23rd during Advisory) where we will collect updated information about their plans for after high school. We will use this data to match students with college reps from their school of interest. The schedule will be posted outside the counseling center and students will receive invite cards in their classrooms they can use as their pass to the library. Thank you, community! An estimated 2,000 middle and high school students in Spokane do not know if they will have enough to eat on weekends during the school year. Second Harvest and At The Core partner with schools and community organizations to get weekend food supplies to hungry teens through Bite2Go XL.

Because Bite2Go proved successful and necessary at the elementary level, the program expanded in 2016 to serve middle and high school students. The Bite2Go XL food kits feature larger portions to accommodate higher caloric needs of older youth. Students choose from a menu of a variety of non-perishable items that they can prepare with basic cooking skills—with or without access to a full kitchen. Bite2Go XL sets itself apart from other middle and high school hunger-relief programs based on the core values of dignity, respect, anonymity and choice.

Thank you to the local organizations that help support Spokane students, and SPS students in particular:

• Eagle Peak Middle & High School: Seven2 & 14Four

• Ferris High School: Movement Mortgage & Revival Tea

• Glover Middle School: Empire Health Foundation

What is DECA? DECA is an association of marketing students. DECA’s mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, and hospitality in high schools around the globe. DECA’s comprehensive learning program integrates into classroom instruction, applies learning, connects to business, and promotes competition. All marketing students can be DECA members. Our team of officers for 2019/20 is busy planning our program of work to make sure members can say: “Here we go” for a great year. Leading our DECA Chapter are: Charlotte Titchenal Hill and Kiefer McConnell, Co-Presidents; Alfreda Johnson, VP of Leadership; Kylee Greenfield and Natalie Heilman, VPs of Marketing; Rylee Zinneker Brown, VP of Hospitality; Izzy Vazquez, VP of Career Development. Our officers and a few other members will attend the Fall Leadership Conference in Bellevue, WA in early November.

We are currently collecting donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank as we kick off our “Tackle Hunger” Community Service Project. In addition to helping financially, many DECA members also will volunteer their time and sort food for Second Harvest.

This year we will continue our partnership with Tom Sawyer Country Coffee, a specialty coffee roaster, and offer whole bean and ground coffee by the pound for sale. We challenge you to “Brew a better day the Highlander way”! Our first order is out now and is due by Friday, 9/20/19. Congratulations to Scott Morris, CEO of Avista, and long-time Shadle Park teacher, Kris Lindeblad as this year's Distinguished Alumni. Kris is a 1970 graduate of Shadle, and Scott was a proud member of the class of 1976. Mrs. Lindeblad, known affectionately to her Scott Morris students and the great Shadle community as "Blad", taught for nearly 30 years at Shadle Park and was revered by her students. Her legacy is still apparent as many current Shadle math teachers themselves had her for class. Her impact was both inside and outside of the classroom as she was the ASB/leadership teacher for years and was Kris Lindeblad instrumental in all forms of student leadership and government. Scott Morris attended Shadle, went on to graduate from , and then started a long and illustrious career at Avista. He has been the CEO and President for the last 11 years and is soon retiring from his position. His leadership has turned Avista into a progressive and environmentally responsible power provider for the greater northwest region. Shadle Park - Thank you for an amazing start! Homecoming was early and the pride and spirit was on display! Along with our Distinguished Alumni award ceremony, our students had a great week of spirit days, spirit walks by our sports teams, an amazing football win over Cheney and a great dance to wrap up the week. Hundreds of Shadle Park students got involved in some way, and many chaperones agreed that this dance was one of the best behaved dances they've seen in a long time. We encourage the entire Shadle Park community to keep the positive pride going all year. All events are tentative as they are based on attendance and approval of administration. Here are some upcoming events we are planning and proposing: Throughout October we will be featuring Social Emotional Learning with an emphasis on anti-bullying, anti-harassment, anti-intimidation behavior, mental- health awareness issues, and a campaign to have students share with an adult when they are concerned about someone's safety. Oct. 1 FAFSA opens for college-bound seniors. Oct. 16 is PSAT day Oct. 25 - tentative Sadie Hawkins dance
