Seasons Connections Vol 2 Getting in touch with Eddie Rambeau and hearing about his times working with Bob Crewe and the Seasons was a treat. (See 60th Birthday Interview in Newsletter No 39 July 2003). So what better track to start the CD than probably Eddie’s best song after ‘Concrete and Clay’(Dynovoice 204). Unfortunately it was on the ‘B’ side of that 1965 hit otherwise it would have been a hit in its own right. • Volume 3, No. 8 Week of April 19Th, 1965
Volume 3, No. 8 Week of April 19th, 1965 There must be a special mold from which come all Western Canadian artists and their managers. Not one have we met that * has been overbearing nor positive that their being on earth was for the reason of attain ing stardom. Barry Allen is no exception. * Both he and his manager Al Johnson are perfect examples of how to succeed and * still maintain respect for others. A welcome change from some of the overbearing pushy managers and their equally misplaced charges. Barry Allen is talented as his Capitol ,,,..,.__,._ outing "Easy Come Easy Go" Will prove. It all started back in Edmonton on July 29 , 1945. That's when the Allen family welcomed a new son name of Barry. But it really didn't happen until this blonde haired western Canadian youngster reached a height of 5'10" and weighed in at 160 lbs and just happened to be going to high school. His singing and guitar picking made him the boy most desirable for a date but he was too busy playing at the dances. His next step turned out to be a big one. He began to sing with the Wes Dakus group, no slouch es when it came to winning a popularity contest. As a matter of fact they topped the polls as "Canada's Top Instrumental Group" (RPM Awards). As a member of the Dakus group he was off to Clovis New Mexico just to play the guitar in a recording session under the direction of Norman Petty.

  • BUT WILL IT PLAY in GRAND RAPIDS? the ROLE of GATEKEEPERS in MUSIC SELECTION in 1960S TOP 40 RADIO
BUT WILL IT PLAY IN GRAND RAPIDS? THE ROLE OF GATEKEEPERS IN MUSIC SELECTION IN 1960s TOP 40 RADIO By Leonard A. O’Kelly A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Media and Information Studies - Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT BUT WILL IT PLAY IN GRAND RAPIDS? THE ROLE OF GATEKEEPERS IN MUSIC SELECTION IN 1960s TOP 40 RADIO By Leonard A. O’Kelly The decision to play (or not to play) certain songs on the radio can have financial ramifications for performers and for radio stations alike in the form of ratings and revenue. This study considers the theory of gatekeeping at the individual level, paired with industry factors such as advertising, music industry promotion, and payola to explain how radio stations determined which songs to play. An analysis of playlists from large-market Top 40 radio stations and small-market stations within the larger stations’ coverage areas from the 1960s will determine the direction of spread of song titles and the time frame for the spread of music, shedding light on how radio program directors (gatekeepers) may have been influenced in their decisions. By comparing this data with national charts, it may also be possible to determine whether or not local stations had any influence over the national trend. The role of industry trade publications such as Billboard and The Gavin Report are considered, and the rise of the broadcast consultant as a gatekeeper is explored. This study will also analyze the discrepancy in song selection with respect to race and gender as compared to national measures of popularity.

Dave's ar<cle is part 2 of his interview with Alan "S<cky" Wicket, who was the drummer in Russ's post-Argent band. I can guarantee, I think, that you won't have heard Dave's cover before. Other contribu<ons come from Tony, Ronnie and Markus, who has something for our German friends. Best wishes Sue THIS MONTH FROM RUSS It’s brilliant to be able to communicate with you online - while we can’t play gigs. It’s be8er than the alterna9ve, no communica9on. I think music is the best way to make contact with like-minded people….to me, it appears to reach the parts that words fail to do - I’ve o@en wondered why? There’s something about frequency and rhyme that seems to magnify the words. I play every day, as most of you know….either guitar or piano, then recording the ideas. Just the fact I'm able to do it a@er many years, makes it even more intense - I love it as much as ever…. Anyway, on to something for these weird 9mes…..’Mindfulness’ - It’s something that has always interested me and for years it’s surprised me that medita9on wasn’t taught in schools.
