Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. • Kristofferson Hit Songs.Rtf
Oct. 17, 2004--- The year 1969 was golden for Kris Kristofferson, who wrote three iconic songs that year. "Sunday Morning Coming Down" became an anthem for Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin had her final hit with "Me and Bobby McGee," and Ray Price's remorseful take on "For the Good Times" remains timeless. Here's Kristofferson talking about how he wrote each song: "Sunday Morning Coming Down": "I was writing about what I was living at the time," Kristofferson said. "I was living alone in a condemned apartment that cost $50 a month, right on Music Row in Nashville. It was a dump. If you didn't have a family, Sundays were a pretty lonely time on Music Row. Everything was shut. The bars weren't even open. "The song's form was probably helped out by my relationship with Mickey Newbury. I know the 'wishin' lord I was stoned' sounds like a Mickey Newbury line. "John Cash always said I flew it in to Cash's backyard in a helicopter. But that wasn't the song I had at the time. As long as John cut it later and did me such a good turn by doing that, I'm willing to go along with whatever he said. But I had been pitching songs at John a long time. Every song I wrote I'd give to June Carter Cash or Cash's guitarist Luther Perkins to give to him. He knew who I was and he was very encouraging to me as a songwriter, but he never cut anything of mine.

Volume 3, No. 8 Week of April 19th, 1965 There must be a special mold from which come all Western Canadian artists and their managers. Not one have we met that * has been overbearing nor positive that their being on earth was for the reason of attain ing stardom. Barry Allen is no exception. * Both he and his manager Al Johnson are perfect examples of how to succeed and * still maintain respect for others. A welcome change from some of the overbearing pushy managers and their equally misplaced charges. Barry Allen is talented as his Capitol ,,,..,.__,._ outing "Easy Come Easy Go" Will prove. It all started back in Edmonton on July 29 , 1945. That's when the Allen family welcomed a new son name of Barry. But it really didn't happen until this blonde haired western Canadian youngster reached a height of 5'10" and weighed in at 160 lbs and just happened to be going to high school. His singing and guitar picking made him the boy most desirable for a date but he was too busy playing at the dances. His next step turned out to be a big one. He began to sing with the Wes Dakus group, no slouch es when it came to winning a popularity contest. As a matter of fact they topped the polls as "Canada's Top Instrumental Group" (RPM Awards). As a member of the Dakus group he was off to Clovis New Mexico just to play the guitar in a recording session under the direction of Norman Petty.
