GPX Tour to California Central Coast Wine Tour & Avila Beach Concours Friday - Sunday, October 23-25 (with Sat/Sun option)

By popular demand, GPX has scheduled a winery tour centered on the Paso Robles area. It is planned so we can also attend the Cal Central Coast Region's annual Zone 8 Concours, held in conjunction with the well-known Avila Beach Concours. — — — The program goes like this — — —

Friday — Depart Carrow's Restaurant in Ventura (2401 Harbor Blvd) at 8:30am SHARP. We suggest arriving at 7:30 for breakfast. Our caravan will follow a very scenic, very Porsche route on country roads, arriving in Paso Robles for a late lunch. The route includes Sespe Gorge, Wheeler Gorge, spectacular coastal mountain scenery, Cuyama Valley farming area, the West Kern Oil Museum, Midway Oilfield, the Temblor Range, Carriso Plain National Monument, and miles of coastal mountain ranch country. The rest of the day we are free to enjoy the historic downtown area and other attractions. We will have recommendations for dinner locations. Those unable to caravan with us can zip up the freeway and arrive for supper or Saturday morning's tour.

The Adelaide Inn (www.AdelaideInn.com) has 18 rooms held for us (up to 30 days before event). One queen - $82.80 plus tax (2 queens available). Cancel up to 72 hrs. There are other events going on, so make reservations early (ask for "Porsche Club”). Make reservations at (805) 238-2770

Saturday — We have a five-hour Wine Tasting Tour set up on the Central Coast Trolley (bus) charter, which includes lunch. The Trolly picks us up in front of the Adalaide Inn at 11 am and returns about 4 pm. It sounds like a fun guided tour in a colorful vehicle (http://www.centralcoasttrolley.com). Owing to the capacity of the Trolley vehicle, our group is limited to twenty persons. First come-first serve, so sign up early. You must send a check for the wine tour to reserve your spot (see below). We have a group dinner booked for Saturday night.

Sunday — We will drive one-half hour south to Avila Beach (near San Luis Obispo) to attend the Avila Beach Concours & Cal Central Coast Region Zone 8 Concours (http://www.avilabeachconcours.com) (Or make your way down later in the morning). This is a very special event, drawing cars from Santa Barbara and Monterey, and includes classic cars of all types. After that we will disperse to find our way home.

Where to meet: 7:30am for Breakfast at Carrow's Restaurant in Ventura (2401 Harbor Blvd) Depart: 8:30 SHARP! (lunch will be in Paso Robles) Have a full tank of gas when you arrive. We will be on 2-lane roads from this point on.

Send $65.00 per person (for Coast Trolley Wine Tour) Make check to PCAGPX and send to: Suesan Way, 10385 Bonnie Lane, La Mesa, CA 91941. Must be postmarked by October 15 ($75.00 after or at event — IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE) Questions? Call Marty Goldsmith at (562) 494 6350 or e-mail at [email protected]. The 54th Porsche Parade was setup differently than the previous 15 I've attended. Instead of a single, large headquarters hotel or resort, Keystone had us in condos and other facilities stretched along a two mile section of Highway 6, with the main conference center near the middle. Each Parade has its own personality, and this one, set at 9400 feet in the Colorado An Alpine meadow on Kolob Mountain Rockies, was spectacular. Our condo overlooked a lake, a rushing stream, geese and lots of big pine trees.

The Rocky Mountain Region's Kathy and Walt Fricke were the Parade chairs. Suesan and I were part of the Parade Committee, being responsible for both the Underground Joe Dimeo and Concours Prep Area as well as Concours Restoration the three Car Washes. Hard Group trophy work is something second nature to Kathy and Walt. One example: because Suesan and I didn't arrive until Friday evening, and the laundry was not open on weekends, Walt and Kathy picked up and transported 75 large bags of car wash towels from the laundry to their car trailer for storage — in a driving rainstorm. This was just one detail of hundreds that they did without flinching. They were a pleasure to work with, and we'd be happy to be on any team they were in charge of.

Our road trip to and from the Parade was also spectacular. We spent the first night with my sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Don Anderson, at The street version GT1 was very mcuh appreciated their mobile home on Lake Mead. From there we headed north, reveling at the magnificent rock formations. We made a quick trip into the southern end of Zion National Park. Vince Knauf suggesting Kolob Rd, bypassing Interstate 5. It runs from the town of Virgin, Utah to Cedar City. It was a beautiful road that got us to Alpine meadows full of Lupin, Aspens, sheep and horses. Vince neglected to mention the 15 miles that weren't paved, but then, as a Cayenne owner, he's no stranger to dirt roads.

There are so many national parks in this part of the country, there's no way to cover them. We saw glimpses of Moab, Glenwood Canyon, lots of scenic Porsche airplane engine that delighted us every Colorado Mountain roads and, on the way home, time he fired it up spent the night in Ouray, Colorado before driving through Monument Valley and spending another night in Sedona, Arizona. The Knaufs even took us on an off-road tour up Yankee Boy Basin after dinner that night in Ouray. Quite impressive what these Cayennes are capable of.

Then there was that 6 am shift There were quite a few Grand Prix Region members that no one showed up for, but we found this Canadian to bundle up at Parade this year, including Bill and Sheila and and man the post Vanessa Burris, Linda Cobarrubias and Doc Pryor, Joe Demeo and Kris Kelly, Michael Dolphin, Nick Perdikaris and Manos Athanassiou, Trudy and Tom Ridings, Cecelia and Vince Knauf, and myself and Suesan Way.

Cecelia and Vince managed the RC Car contest, which was done in a great courtyard setting at the The new Panamera arrived with Kurt and same time and place as the Ice Cream Social. It was Angie Gibson in the a great setting and lots of fun. back seat view from our room Bill Burris took 3rd place in the 928 Tech Quiz, Cecelia Knauf took 3rd in her Autocross class. She and Vince figured out that the Cayenne Turbo was probably a disadvantage at that altitude. Cecelia Knauf and Bonnie Rickard came in 93rd in the Time- Speed-Distance Rally, and Trudy Ridings and Lisa Taylor came in 106th out of 175. I have done one or two Rallys, and I'll tell you, I've not been able to even finish one, let alone place well. GPX members at the Parade Welcome Party I also want to mention that Bill Burris, as the PCA Technical Committee's 924/944/968 chair, conducted one of the many Technical Seminars at Parade.

The premier event at a Parade is the Concours d'Elegance. In Keystone it was held on a beautiful golf course with snowy mountains for a backdrop. Grand Prix Region had one representative in the Concours, the 1986 Marble Grey 930 restored by Bill, Sheila & Vanessa Burris in front Joe Demeo and Kris Kelly. Not only did the get a of the 1974 IROC Carrera RSR Class win, but they took First in Division and the Restoration Group trophy. For those of you who don't know, there is no higher award in a PCA Concours. Achieving this level at a Porsche Parade is something Manon Athanassiou few people accomplish. Congratulations to Joe and Nick Perdikaris Kris. Well done!!! You made GPX proud! Carolyn Ewbank Bev Gould Greg Phillips Suesan Way, Linda Cobbarubias So, another great Parade is in the books. We got to drive on hundreds of miles of Colorado scenic highways, visited abandoned mine towns, the Leadville Opera House, the Hotel de Paris in Georgetown and lots more.

15 BreakfastThe Circuit Club Meeting Report — July 11 by Peter Ross photos by Jimmie Mitchell & Skip Carter

Everyone in attendance at the Grand Prix Region July Breakfast Club meeting was a part of history. It was the first time in our existence that our attendance exceeded 100 members. That’s a lot of Porsches and people.

July also brought our typical summer sunshine. The brief sprinkling of rain was a surprise for everyone, but didn't last long.

The meeting was chock full of raffle items and giveaways, including items brought by Lenny Yee of Pacific Porsche, Marc Bixen from Red Line Gary & Cheryl Holcomb Services and Beth Damianakes from AAA. Skip Carter, Suesan Way and Michael Dolphin also brought items fresh from the Porsche Parade in Keystone, Colorado.

Our Zone 8 Representative, Michael Dolphin, presented Skip Carter with an award for First Place Class III in PCA's national Newsletter Contest. This is not the first time that Skip has collected this trophy. Each of us that reads The Beth Damianakes from AAA Ernie, Rick & Eric Becker Circuit can testify to the fact that he truly does magnificent work. Excellent job Skip. The honor is truly well deserved.

We had several presenters this month: Marc Bixen and Ernie Becker (a former race car Ernie Becker & Marc Bixen driver) presenting Red Line Services newly of Red Line Service added online parts store. Their information was Ron Shanon announcing both insightful and helpful. It’s just one of the Dutch Treat's new location benefits of attending a Breakfast Club Meeting… You never know who’s going to show up and talk to us. If you want to know anything about your Porsche, just show up at a meeting and ask someone. I guarantee you, you’ll walk away knowing exactly what you need to do. Pacific Porsche's Lenny Yee talks Kenny Bornstein & about their upcoming Beth Damianakes, from the Auto Club, did a Dan Koenig from Auto customer service day Werkstatt & Accutrack presentation on their Classic Auto program. Marty Goldsmith talked about our upcoming tours, and Rick Mills talked about upcoming Jeff Haas, Michael Dolphin & Norma Dawson Tech Sessions.

After the meeting was over, one of our members could not get his 944 started. Several people immediately jumped into service. Marc Bixen (who seems to know everything related to Porsche) said: “You should always carry an extra DME Relay, it’ll make someone happy.” Now, I

don’t know what a DME Relay is or does, but Marc knew the exact part number (it was a very long number) and, incidentally, they got the car running in no time flat.

When Albert Hammond sang, “It Never Rains in Southern California,” he found a believer in the Grand Prix Region of the Porsche Club of America. Thirty Porsches showed up in Gorillas in the Mist — Our Angeles Crest Highway Tour La Canada on Saturday, June 13th, to take on Angeles Crest by Richard Elliott Highway with cloudy skies and rain threatening. Hammond photos by Richard Elliott, Marty Goldsmith & Skip Carter confessed that, when it rains, “it pours,” which only proves he was a better songwriter than weather forecaster. As the group assembled near Jay’s Shell Station at the foot of Ange- les Crest highway, a mist coated the cars and the streets.

It was clear that Porsche would not own the Angeles Crest Highway, even on a dreary day. The wet had not deterred motorcycle riders and cyclists. They were out in force.

Armed with a National Forest Adventure Pass and a full tank of gas, each Porsche assumed a position in line and began the climb though over sixty miles of twisting roads in the San Gabriel Mountains. There was a brief pullover, to make sure any stragglers had not been held up by traffic lights. In the first leg, the mist required windshield wipers but visibility was good and there were big sweeping turns to The day went from light rain, to heavy fog... lay on the gas, as well as fun switchbacks. to a pretty darn nice day in the Southern California mountains The first stop was Red Box. Years ago, emer- gency forest fire equipment was kept in a large red shed, the “Red Box.” There’s still a red box at the site and, presumably, fire equipment in it. Marty Goldsmith has organized many events for us, and had family connections to this one. His uncle owned Cabin 27, the only survivor of a flood that swept through the area years ago. Marty also mentioned other ties, including a camp area once used by the Long Beach school district.

While GPX assembled at Red Box, the sun started to shine: Cabriolet tops went down - Sunglasses came out. We began the next leg of the journey, to Mount Wilson, but as the procession rolled away, the mist returned, the temperature dropped, and visibility dropped to a car length. The bases of the large Mount Wilson towers were barely visible.

Marty made a right turn into the parking lot, followed by several Porsches. Somewhere in the middle of the group, the car in front was lost in the mist, so the back half of the group continued back to Red Box, having lost the lead group. Given the visibility, each group reported that the view was much the same, there was none. The serenity of the graceful turns in these mountain roads was occasionally disturbed by

giant pines, that a second before, had been invisible. It was theatrical, the way a mist would be followed by “Mr. Toad’s Gorillas in the Mist — Our Angeles Crest Highway Tour Wild Ride” with objects popping out of nowhere. by Richard Elliott photos by Richard Elliott, Marty Goldsmith & Skip Carter While Marty shared his knowledge of Mount Wilson with the group at the summit, the cars from the mountain loop were enjoying the clear views back at Red Box when some- one figured out the benefit of being first in line for lunch at Newcomb’s Ranch Inn, and sped off. A Porsche is a power- ful tool, when motivated by hunger.

Lunch conversation was a reminder that “It’s not the cars, it’s the people.” Subjects ranged from 'speed dating' to 'best va- cations.' In the shared experience of our passion for Porsche, we find many ways to bond. There were raves for the food and service, especially considering our large group dropping in all at once. Club members chipped in by wiping down tables and bringing drinks.

When a silver Turbo pulled away from Newcomb’s Ranch Inn with a beautiful engine roar, a cyclist commented: “That’s the loudest Porsche I’ve ever heard.” On cue, the Moard's black Turbo S fired off the mark to challenge this new standard. The cyclist didn’t revise his assessment, perhaps fearing that the next Porsches to leave would cause his friend to question his auditory acuity.

From the sunny encampment of Newcomb’s Ranch, all assumed the “June gloom” had burned off and that it would be clear skys the rest of the way. It was hit and miss, but at the end of the day, the sky and road were again clear.

The run along Angles Crest Highway was memo- rable. There is nothing more enjoyable than hearing sweet Porsche music through turn after turn. The pedals certainly got a workout. Following the tail- lights of the most beautiful cars in the world, as they blend with shadows and fog and then bright sun- shine, brings appreciation that Grand Prix members were able to experience this together. Porsches are such marvelous beasts. Gorillas in the mist.

It also contains an outstanding construction of the various models and mid-year collection of candid portraits of famous, and not so variations, as well as the race results of each year. famous, drivers. Strangely missing are year-end final standings of the various championships in which Porsche's participated.

Long's book begins with Ferdinand Porsche’s racing exploits with Lohner and Austro-Daimler, and discusses the Glockler racing experiences, and the Cisitalia project, to set the stage for the first Porsche racer – the model 550 (with a courtesy nod to the America Roadster that was raced by customers before the factory racing started) notably with pushrod engined 550 Spyders.

Visually complex (many pages have multiple pictures of varying sizes), Long’s book tells much of its story by means of expanded captions for the many photographs included. Most of the early pictures are black-and-white, appropriate to that time. Anniversary Misses

This is two months in a row now (that I know of).

Last month I had a little note in The Circuit because I had left Claude Mitchell's PCA anniversary out the previous month. So, on page 27 I have a photo of Claude with a note about his 12th Anniversary. Only problem was, it was his 22nd Jack Di Rosario — 29 years Anniversary! Sorry Claude.

A few months earlier I forgot Jack Di Rosario's Anniversary. Back in April was Jack's 29th Anniversary. Sorry Jack... but congratulations.

One more year and you get to be editor (that's a hint.... Anyone looking for an editor's job? Even half the job?) Claude Mitchell — 22 years
