1 /18 (8.99/9) 7.1 Leonard Cohen obituary It is a remarkable testament to the scope of popular music that Leonard Cohen could ever have been filed under the headings of rock or pop. A poet and novelist as well as a songwriter, Cohen, who has died aged 82 , was as much a literary figure as a musical one.

Early in his career, his novel (1966) caused the Boston Globe to declare that “James Joyce is not dead. He is living in Montreal under the name of Cohen.” Yet Cohen was determined to establish himself as a songwriter, having been smitten as profoundly as any of his contemporaries by the emergence of rock’n’roll music. “I always loved rock,” he said. “I remember the first time I heard Presley, how relieved and grateful I was that all this stuff he and all of us had been feeling for so long had finally found a particular kind of expression.”

His debut album, , was released in December 1967, and while not everybody loved its funereal tone, the songs it contained, such as Suzanne, So Long, Marianne and Sisters of Mercy, would prove to be cornerstones of his repertoire for the rest of his long musical career.

In his later years he became a Zen monk and spent much of the 1990s sequestered in a monastery on Mount Baldy in California, where he was known as Jikan (the Silent One). Fans often seek spiritual guidance from their idols, but Cohen was a rare example of one who might actually have been capable of providing it.

Cohen was born in Westmount, a well-to-do suburb of Montreal. He was the second child of Nathan, who owned a clothing business, and his wife, Masha (nee Klonitsky), the daughter of a rabbi. Cohen exhibited a passion for country music from an early age and formed a country and western band, the Buckskin Boys, while studying English at McGill University. At the time, this seemed like a mere sideline to a highly promising literary career. He published his first collection of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies, in 1956. His second, The Spice-Box of Earth, followed in 1961, and the provocatively titled (1964) won him the Quebec literary award.

By that time, Cohen, after a brief spell at Columbia University, New York, had obtained a grant to enable him to travel, and after rambling across , had settled on the Greek island of Hydra. His love affair with Marianne Jensen – who inspired his song So Long, Marianne – kept him coming back there for the next few years. Meanwhile, he was developing an authentic fiction-writer’s voice, displayed in the novels (1963) and Beautiful Losers. Passing through New York in 1966 on the way to Nashville, he was introduced to the folk singer Judy Collins, played some of his songs to her, and won an immediate convert. Collins became the first artist to cover Cohen’s material when she recorded Suzanne and Dress Rehearsal Rag for her album In My Life, released that November, giving Leonard a valuable career boost.

She also played an advisory role in his career as a performer. When Cohen ran offstage in panic at a 1967 anti-Vietnam war benefit in New York, it was Collins who persuaded him to go back out and finish the job. Over the decades, she would record many of his most famous pieces. “His songs carried me through dark years like mantras or stones that you hold in your hand while the sun rises or the fire burns,” she wrote in her 1987 autobiography, Trust Your Heart. “They were songs for the spirit when our spirits were strained to the breaking point.”

Cohen came to the attention of the talent scout and producer John Hammond (the man who signed Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and many more), who wasted no time in adding him to the company’s roster and recording his debut album.

He followed it up with (1969), another powerful but bleak collection that helped to reinforce Cohen’s reputation as music to slash your wrists by. However, British audiences were proving particularly receptive (unlike British critics, who savaged him), and had several chances to see Cohen onstage in 1970 when he appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in London and at rock festivals in Bath and the Isle of Wight. (1971) was backed up by further bouts of international touring.

However, Cohen was temperamentally ill-suited for a conventional musical career of endless touring and recording. The Energy of Slaves, a new collection of poetry, appeared in 1972, and when a theatrical tribute to his life and music called Sisters of Mercy was produced in New York the following year, it was an indication of the way Cohen’s work cut across boundaries. His next album, New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974) contained Chelsea Hotel No2, a song offering some explicit details about his brief relationship with the rock singer Janis Joplin.

In 1977 he released Death of a Ladies Man. Cohen had retreated to Greece for a spot of spiritual renewal in the interim. The album was notable for its pairing of Cohen with the producer Phil Spector. Spector, inventor of the “wall of sound” and a notorious control freak, was an unlikely collaborator, and despite some quality songwriting, the disc is an anomaly in the Cohen catalogue. Cohen subsequently referred to it as “Phil’s album”, pointing out that its creation coincided with a rough patch in his own life, when his mother was dying in Montreal. “When we were just working together alone, it was very, very pleasant,” he said of Spector. “But when he gets in the studio he becomes Mr Hyde.” He added that “Phil mixed it in secret under armed guard.”

Something like normal service was resumed with (1979), which worked Cohen’s familiar territory of emotional and sexual relationships while giving rein to the author’s developing spiritual and religious concerns. It also included Cohen duetting with , who had first appeared with him on Live Songs in 1973 and would contribute to all Cohen’s up to (2012). She featured prominently on (1985), Cohen’s most potent album in a decade, and one which saw him consciously embracing state- of-the-art studio technology. Again, several songs carried a powerful religious undertow.

In 1987, Warnes released , an album of covers of Cohen songs including . Cohen’s own recording of this subsequently appeared on I’m Your Man (1988). Twenty years after his debut album, I’m Your Man brilliantly repositioned Cohen as a wise, world-weary and acerbically witty survivor, singing about sexual politics in the era of Aids or the agonising grind of the songwriting process. Suddenly he became marketable again, outside the US at any rate, and the disc topped the charts in several European countries.

It was four years before he released his next disc, The Future (which included a co-producer’s credit for his then-partner, the actor Rebecca de Mornay), but by now a full-scale reappraisal of Cohen’s achievements was under way. The tribute album I’m Your Fan (1991) was a collection of Cohen songs performed by admirers including REM, John Cale, Nick Cave and Ian McCulloch. In 1995, : The Songs of Leonard Cohen trod similar turf, featuring a cavalcade of superstars from Bono and Don Henley to Elton John and Peter Gabriel.

Ten New Songs (2001) apparently marked Cohen’s emergence from monastic seclusion on Mount Baldy, and found him leaning heavily on his co-writer, the musician Sharon Robinson, for support. He had been made an officer of the Order of Canada in 1991, and his creative longevity earned him promotion to the rank of companion of the order in 2003.

Cohen’s album (2004) seemed part valediction, part celebration, and was partly experimental in the way it mixed modern technology with traditional instruments. It included settings of poetry by Byron and Frank Scott alongside precisely wrought all-Cohen compositions, not least his reflections on the 9/11 attacks, On That Day. The disc was in part a homage to the role women had played in his life, with significant contributions from Robinson, Leanne Ungar and Thomas. “Women have been exceptionally kind to my old age,” he sang in Because Of.

The tone of wry self-mockery was classic Cohen, and he confessed that his monastic immersion in Zen Buddhism had helped to dispel the depression which had hung over him in his earlier years. Although he had just turned 70, he did not sound much older than he had at 35, and of course he had never had to rely on deafening volume or theatrical showmanship in presenting his work to the public. This new-found optimism must have been of significant assistance during a protracted legal battle with his former manager Kelley Lynch. She was judged liable by a California court for millions of dollars she had siphoned from Cohen’s estate, and ordered to pay him $9.5m (about £5.4m), but recovering the money proved arduous.

Her emptying of the singer’s retirement fund proved an effective goad to his creativity. In 2006 he released Blue Alert, an album of songs he had written with Thomas, though listeners were taken aback to discover that it was she who handled all the vocals. She had been intrigued by some handwritten lyrics she had found on Cohen’s desk – “There’s perfume burning in the air / bits of beauty everywhere” – and asked if she could take a shot at singing them, which she did in her own idiosyncratic jazzy style. Cohen liked the results so much that, as he recalled, he “let her rummage through a notebook for lyrics that interested her”. (2006), a collection of poetry and drawings, became an instant bestseller and the following year was staged as a concert work incorporating Cohen’s images and text, with music composed by Philip Glass.

In 2008, Cohen was not only inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but also embarked on his first concert tour in a decade and a half, criss-crossing Canada, Europe and the Antipodes. At the Glastonbury festival that June, hysteria greeted his performance of his song Hallelujah, suddenly a mini-phenomenon after having featured on the US TV talent show American Idol. The publicity propelled Jeff Buckley’s 1994 recording to the top of the iTunes chart, while the UK’s Christmas 2008 chart would list Buckley’s recording at No 2, pipped to the top by a version from Alexandra Burke, the winner of the UK TV talent show The X Factor. Cohen’s touring odyssey continued into 2009, though concerns about his health were aroused when he collapsed onstage in Valencia, ostensibly because of food poisoning. Later that month he performed in Israel, which triggered controversy at a time when other musicians were proposing a cultural boycott of the country.

He continued touring into 2010 (the year in which he received the Grammy lifetime achievement award), and undertook a further world tour in 2012-13. In 2012 he released Old Ideas, a collection of songs which pondered such durable themes as mortality, love and redemption and which became the highest-charting of his career, reaching No 1 in a string of territories. His 13th studio album, (2014), arrived on the day after Cohen’s 80th birthday, and it won him album of the year at the 2015 Junos, the Canadian music awards.

In October 2016 he released , a sombre and fastidiously crafted set of songs (produced by his son, Adam) in which Cohen seemed to be taking stock of his life while contemplating its approaching end. In an interview in the New Yorker magazine to coincide with the album, he struck a fatalistic tone, while declaring his determination to keep working at his craft until the end. “I’ve got some work to do,” he said. “Take care of business. I am ready to die. I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.”

He is survived by Adam, a singer-songwriter, and a daughter, Lorca, a photographer and videographer, from his relationship with the artist Suzanne Elrod.

2 /18 0.0 Royal Oak Middle School students chant 'Build that wall'

(4.27/9) One day after Republican candidate Donald Trump was elected president, some middle school students in Royal Oak chanted enthusiasm for one of his platform planks: building a wall between the United States and Mexico.

The incident was captured on video and widely shared on Facebook. It took place at lunchtime at Royal Oak Middle School.

As soon as the chants began, seventh-grader Josie Ramon, 12, said she pulled out her phone and captured the video to share with her mother.

"Tears were running down my face," said Josie, who is Mexican-American. "I was so upset. A friend went to the bathroom crying. Everybody was chanting along with it. She was scared. She looked really upset. I felt really bad for her. "

"I knew I wanted evidence I could show my mom," Josie said. "It’s so unbelievably wrong. I had no tolerance of it so I recorded it. "

Alicia Ramon said her daughter discreetly recorded the video and sent it to her. After Ramon shared it with another parent, the video spread and eventually and inevitably made its way to Facebook.

The short video shows students in a section of the cafeteria making a chant, as a student at a different table records. The video lasted only seconds.

This happened today at Royal Oak Middle School in Royal Oak, Michigan," wrote Dee Perez- Scott, who posted the video on Facebook on Wednesday. "It is so sad. Latino children were crying. The taunts, the 'Build that Wall' with such bullying power and hate from children to children. Just horrifying! "

"We addressed this incident when it occurred. We are addressing it today," Royal Oak Schools superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin said in a statement. "We are working with our students to help them understand the impact of their words and actions on others in their school community," the statement continued.

The Detroit News has contacted the district for more information on the nature of the district's response.

Alicia Ramon, said her daughter grow stronger from this incident, just as she has after other instances of racially insensitive comments and jokes at the school. She said she feels for her daughter's friend, who went to the restroom to cry after the incident.

"I can only imagine her devastation in a place she’s supposed to feel safe, a group of friends she felt welcome by," Ramon said. "She no longer feels safe... when your entire table stands up and says build a wall and you’re the only person of color that’s sitting there. " Ramon said she requested the district send home something in writing about the incident. They did not, she said, adding that the principal, Todd Noonan, posted a video message Thursday for students. She said she plans to meet with other parents and school officials to discuss the issue. "For me, the message should be one of an open dialogue, teaching children empathy, love," she said. "This is a teachable moment. "

Josie said she's received some backlash for recording the video, but she's also received support from a teacher and her friends. She said school officials need to find who started the chant and have a talk with them.

"They need to understand what they’ve done," she said. "I think the school needs to take charge. "

The Royal Oak Police Department was at the middle school Thursday and was expected to be there throughout the day, Lt. Keith Spencer said.

"We are aware of the video and are monitoring comments on it as it gets shared," Spencer told The News.

Families have expressed concern about student safety after the incident, the school district's statement said.

"In responding to this incident — indeed in responding to this election — we need to hear each other’s stories, not slogans" Lewis-Lakin said in the statement. "We need to work towards understanding, not scoring points, and we need to find a way to move forward that respects and values each and every member of our community. We will be working on this in school today. " [email protected]

4 /18 0.0 Amazon drags Black Friday sale across 12 days and offers one hour delivery (1.02/9) Amazon is turning the screw on the High Street with a 12 day Black Friday sale and one hour delivery in some cities. The retail giant has been blamed for sucking billions in sales from town centres with bricks and mortar stores forced to put up the shutters. A recent study found shops were closing at the rate of 15 a day in the first six months of 2016 and life is getting even more difficult for traditional retailers. BHS has gone for the high street and this week Marks & Spencer said it closing 30 large outlets and downsizing or replacing 45 others with small food outlets. High Street sales fell by 1.5per cent over the three months to October while the figure through web outlets rose by 11.1per cent, according to figures published by the British Retail Consortium earlier this week. Amazon has been instrumental in bringing the American Black Friday sales phenomenon to Britain. Many British retailers hate the event as for they feel forced to take part, cutting their own prices and profit margins, for fear of losing sales. Black Friday has also disrupted the Christmas shopping season, bringing a huge chunk of spending forward to the end of November. Last year, Amazon’s Black Friday sale ran for five days, but this year it is being extended to 12, starting on Monday. There will be price cuts on popular toys, fuelling fierce competition with Argos, now owned by Sainsbury’s and Tesco. It is also promising ‘lightning deals’ on gifts, HD TVs, phones and audio products, beauty products, home accessories and fashion. Amazon is desperate not to be seen to be steamrollering small retailers. It pointed out that more than 1,000 independent Amazon Marketplace sellers will be offering deals via the website. Members of Amazon Prime, which costs £79 a year, will get early access to the deals. Significantly, some of the deals will be available through Prime Now, Amazon’s app that offers ultra-fast delivery to Prime customers. Customers using the app can choose delivery within one hour of ordering for £6.99, or delivery within a choice of two-hour, same-day delivery slots at no extra charge. This service operates in London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Portsmouth. The Amazon UK boss, Doug Gurr, said: ‘In response to positive customer feedback for Black Friday deals, we are introducing The Black Friday Sale – 12 days of fantastic deals on must-have gifts and products, saving our customers millions of pounds.’ ‘We’re also thrilled to have over a thousand small businesses featuring in our Black Friday sale, broadening the selection for our customers and enabling those businesses to boost their sales in the run up to Christmas.’

5 /18 1.7 Reddit users take WikiLeaks to task over email dumps, Russia (1.02/9) WikiLeaks became a focal point of the 2016 presidential election, and on Thursday, Reddit users took the controversial document sharing site to task during an AMA.

WikiLeaks’ periodic email dumps during the 2016 presidential election targeted Hillary Clinton, her campaign, and the DNC, and arguably proved to be disastrous.

The document dump shows John Podesta, now Hillary Clinton's campaign chair, emailing Obama before he was even elected president and discussing a ...

Over the summer, WikiLeaks released thousands of internal DNC emails. The emails led to questioning about the fairness of the Democratic process, and the DNC’s apparent favoring of Clinton over her former rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Most recently, WikiLeaks released thousands of emails from accounts used by Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, who has since acknowledged his emails were hacked.

The persistent email dumps, while praised by some, also brought much criticism, including Russia’s possible involvement in the email hacks. On Thursday, WikiLeaks staff held an AMA, or an ask me anything, following Tuesday’s election of Donald Trump to president. Many users had tough questions for WikiLeaks. Among alleged Russian involvement in the hacking, these questions also included WikiLeaks’ role in Trump’s U. S. election win, its sourcing, and its focus on the Democrats and Clinton, and not Republicans.

Among the highlights of the AMA, was WikiLeaks revealing it decides to publish information according to its “promise to sources for maximum impact.” WikiLeaks also denied colluding with Trump’s campaign, and Russia, and defended the information it dumped and its timing.

Here are some of the top questions asked of WikiLeaks during the Reddit AMA, followed by WikiLeaks’ answers. The questions and answers have been published in full below, without editing:

Q : Why did you want Donald Trump to be elected president?

A: Sorry to just see this one now. We arent ignoring the question. There are a lot of questions coming in - which is great, just please forgive us for taking time to go through them....

We were not publishing with a goal to get any specific candidate elected. We were publishing with the one goal of making the elections as transparent as possible. We published what we received.

I know that many media, including the New York Times, did editorially back one candidate over another. We didnt and havent. We would have published on any candidate. We still will if we get the submissions.

Q : Many people have suggested that WikiLeaks was brazenly partisan in this election and colluded with Team Trump (and by extension, Russia). Just today a top Russian ally to Putin is quoted as saying Russia did not interfere in the election but “maybe helped a bit with WikiLeaks”.1

“How much do you consider the impact of selective releasing, insinuation, the timing of releases and the intentions of your sources when preparing to release documents?

Would there ever come a point when these factors outweigh the benefit of informing the public or is informing the public inherently worthwhile regardless of the circumstances?”

Many thanks.

1. Note: the ally was speculating, not admitting - https://www.theguardian.com/us- news/2016/nov/09/putin-applauds-trump-win-and-hails-new-era-of-positive-ties-with-us? CMP=share_btn_tw

A : The allegations that we have colluded with Trump, or any other candidate for that matter, or with Russia, are just groundless and false. We receive information anonymously, through an anonymous submission platform. We do not need to know the identity of the source, neither do we want to know it.

The intention of the source is irrelevant in our editorial process. Every source of every journalist has an intention and an agenda, may it be hidden or clear. Requesting the intention from our sources would firstly likely jeopardize their anonymity, and secondly form a bias in our understanding of the information we received. Their authenticity and their relevance to the public or the historical record are the only preconditions for us to publish the documents we are given.

Q : Yesterday, while denying Russian interference in the US electoral process, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said “maybe we helped a bit with WikiLeaks.”

A : I dont know. We are rather annoyed though he tried to take credit for our work! ;)

He is just a political pundit, akin to the likes of Bill O’Reilly, and was just repeating speculative claims.

Q: How did you decide timing of #PodestaEmails and how to groups emails into parts?

A: We publish according to our promise to sources for maximum impact, along with our goal of informing the public, so often we split large archive releases into sections to ensure the public can fully absorb and utilise the material. For the Podesta Emails our release strategy was based on our Stochastic Terminator algorithm. We are of course also only able to publish as fast as our resources allow. You can help us to publish faster by supporting us here: https://shop.wikileaks.org/donate

Q : Why do you only seem to have information on Democrats?

If you were as Noble as you say you would believe in government accountability at all levels, not just for one party.

A : To date, we have not received information on Donald Trump’s campaign, or other campaigns. If it were to be submitted now we would happily publish it. Information on how campaigns are fought is important in the moment, and after to learn lessons from. We certainly believe in accountability and transparency for the powerful. And this includes for all the campaigns in the election. We can of course only publish what we receive. If anyone has information on any of the other campaigns we urge them to submit it now before it is deleted - https://wikileaks.org/#submit

Q : Why did you choose to expose Clinton and not trump?

A : There was no choice to be made. We release information that we receive. We cannot release what we don’t have.

Is there anything they wouldn’t leak?

Q : Are there any things that you wouldn’t condone leaking? Anything that has come in that was just too much of a risk, or would have too much impact on something?

A : We have an editorial policy to publish only information that we have validated as true and that is important to the political, diplomatic or historical. We believe in transparency for the powerful and privacy for the rest.

We publish in full in an uncensored and uncensorable fashion. We have had to, and will have to, take risks ourselves (the secret Grand Jury that began due to our 2010 publications continues to this day) in a number of the publications we do. But we are not risk adverse and will continue to publish fearlessly.

Q : How much information comes from sources wikileaks is aware of vs. those that are anonymous?

A: Our submissions system is based on the concept of sources being as anonymous and protected as possible. We dont want to know who our sources are for their protection, and ours.

Q : Curation and deciding “how to present and where and when” is gatekeeping. Editorial voice is as much about deciding where and when to say something as it is about what is said. Thinking that somehow you’re not a gatekeeper when you are timing the release of information for maximum political impact is either disingenuous or dangerously naive.

A : We decide for maximum impact, source protection etc with the goal to publish as soon as possible after submission as we are ready (things like source protection and validation can take some time) according to our editorial policies. We do not withhold or censor information and we publish full archives. If we didnt that would be gatekeeping. We have published more classified or otherwise supressed documents than the rest of the worlds media combined. We do publish as fast as we can. We always call for leaks early and often to ensure that as fast as possible is as fast as needed.

Q: Why wasn’t the DNC corruption, or any of Hillary’s corruption scandals released; you know, when Bernie was still in the race?

A : We publish as fast as we can. When we started that publication it was the first day we were ready. We were able to go out just before the nomination, but to do that we had to work all through the night. As we say: leak early and leak often.

Q : What is your response to Snowden’s remarks saying: Democratizing information has never been more vital, and @Wikileaks has helped. But their hostility to even modest curation is a mistake.

A : This sort of conversation about a journalist’s role in controlling information is an important one. We have also had public conversations with Glenn Greenwald on this too. I like that these happen publicly, so that the public can follow and interact with the position of both sides and make up their own minds.

I think it was clear even before this twitter exchange that WikiLeaks and some others have different stances on this. For example it has been said the whole Snowden archive will never be published - something we highly disagree with.

Regarding the curation comment - I would disagree with Snowden’s comment here. Working at WikiLeaks I know we do work with our submissions a lot for validation, how to present and where and when.

What we do not do is censor. We believe in full access to information and knowledge for all citizens. We do not think we are the gatekeepers of information and your right to know. We publish what we receive that is true, for you all to see. Your right to information shouldn’t be controlled by others.

6 /18 1.4 Gary Trent Jr. picks Duke over Michigan State, UCLA

(1.02/9) Five-star Gary Trent Jr., one of the top shooting guards in the nation in the class of 2017, on Thursday night made a verbal commitment to Duke.

Trent Jr. (6-5, 200) picked the Blue Devils over his other finalists, Michigan State and UCLA.

Trent Jr., who plays for Prolific Prep in Napa, California, is ranked the No. 2 shooting guard in the nation and the No. 12 player overall for 2017 by Scout.com.

Trent Jr., the son of former NBA player Gary Trent, made his announcement on ESPNU.

During his recruitment, Trent Jr. wrote a blog for USA Today.

On Thursday night, immediately after Trent Jr. made his announcement, USA Today published a new blog entry by Trent Jr., and it included his reasons for picking Duke and not MSU or UCLA.

“I picked Duke because of Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski),” Trent Jr. wrote. “He’s a brand himself and his track record is amazing. He’s the winningest coach of all-time and I truly believe that he can do nothing but improve and benefit my life in every way, shape and form.

“I really believe that he’s gonna help me grow into a great basketball player, but, also, an even greater young man.”

As for MSU, Trent Jr. wrote: “I love Coach Izzo, he’s a Hall of Famer, I have nothing but the utmost respect for he and his staff. … I really loved everything about the school.

“What I had to do was remove the emotions from the decision because if I didn’t I would’ve never been able to do it. I had to look at it like a business decision and which school would improve my life. “I really felt like Duke was that school for me.”

11 /18 1.4 David Essex superfan thrown out of Manchester concert for DANCING too wildly A David Essex superfan was left stunned after she was ejected from one of his concerts - for dancing too wildly. Self-confessed number one fan Heather Dunn-Fox, 59, has travelled across the country following her idol for the last 43 years and watched him perform over 100 times. But last week, the grandmother-of-20 attended the singer's concert at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall - and was chucked out because of her 'disruptive behaviour'. The mum-of-six was at the gig on November 2 with her sister Marina 57, and was dancing to the singer's hits including chart toppers 'Hold Me Close' and 'Gonna Make You a Star'. But after a frustrated concert-goer complained about Heather's over-enthusiastic dance moves - she was escorted out of the premises and banned from going back inside. Heather, from Leek, Staffordshire, said: 'I couldn't believe what was happening. I was essentially thrown out for enjoying myself too much. 'When David came on stage everyone went berserk as always. 'I initially stood in the aisle with another girl dancing away to his songs but we were asked to go to our seats, which I did. 'But I stayed standing and dancing and waving about the flowers which I had to give to David after the show. 'A girl who was sat next to me asked me to stop invading her space, which I apologised for, but you do get caught up in the moment with David Essex. 'But then I noticed she and her friend had disappeared and the next thing a bouncer came over and signalled for me to go outside to speak to him. 'I went out and he said there had been a complaint about me invading people's personal space.' Unemployed Heather was then shocked to be told she was banned from going back inside after a bouncer overheard her making a derogatory comment about the women. She added: 'I shouldn't have said it but the bouncer overheard me tell my sister 'those b****** have complained about me'. 'After that, they refused to let me back in. 'I apologised and said that I would not stand and dance anymore and that I would behave myself but he would not let me in. 'I begged and sobbed to be let back in as I had been looking forward to the concert. 'It is his last tour and I was devastated. I only saw him perform three songs. 'All I was doing was having a bit of a boogie. What are you supposed to do, sit there in silence and clap politely? 'I wasn't drunk, I'd only had one pint, all I was doing was having a good old dance, which surely you should be able to do at a concert. 'Its not like we were at a night at the opera.' The family then drove home before David could be presented with his customary flowers and teddy from Heather, who has spent over £3,500 over the years on the pop star's concerts. She added: 'I went to the stage door saying I would wait for David to come out at the end of the show to give him the flowers and a teddy which I always give to him. 'But my son insisted I got in the car and we went home. 'I have been going to David Essex concerts since I was 16. I normally go to at least two a year. 'I have never had any problem before with dancing and waving the flowers about.' However, all is not lost for Heather as she is now looking forward to attending David's concert at the Regent Theatre in Stoke-on- Trent, Staffs., on November 24. She added: 'Going to see David Essex in concert is 'me' time. 'It's time when I am not a wife, a mum or a grandmother - just Heather. This will be the last time I see David in concert because he is retiring from touring after this tour. 'I will definitely keep calm for the Hanley one and will wait until later on in the concert to have a dance.' Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were called to the Bridgewater Hall after Heather was chucked out of the venue. Inspector Phil Spurgeon said: 'Officers dealt with the woman who was described as being a bit drunk and becoming a bit wild. 'She was given advice and left with family members.'

12 /18 1.4 Gross find will make 3 fishermen very rich Three fisherman in Oman have found 176 pounds of precious ambergris — a substance that is essentially whale vomit but highly prized by the perfume industry. Seeker reports that the ambergris could be worth as much as $2.8 million. “I’ll wait to see how this sale will go and later I’ll think of changing my career,” one of the lucky trio tells the Times of Oman .

The substance is worth so much because it is a key ingredient in high-end perfumes, helping scents linger longer on the human skin. The fishermen found it floating on the water while fishing near Qurayat. “We used a rope to collect it and carry it inside the boat,” says the fisherman. They have already received offers from traders in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, and an auction is expected this week.

Ambergris is produced in the digestive tracts of sperm whales and released as feces or vomit into the ocean, where it slowly hardens and floats. Most often it is found on shore, and the Conversation has a primer on how to identify the stuff.

15 /18 0.8 Zayn Malik seen in LA as Gigi Hadid admits she wasn't a One Direction fan His girlfriend Gigi Hadid recently took aim at his former band, revealing she wasn't a One Direction fan. Scroll down for video The Bradford native opted to layer his relaxed wardrobe staple over a loose-fitting navy tee, which cheekily had 'I'm having a nice day, don't screw it up' emblazoned across the chest. Continuing his laid back look, the singer slipped on a pair of skinny charcoal coloured denims as he strutted his stuff on the pavement in a black leather Chelsea boot. Zayn accessorised his casually clad appearance with his trademark necklace, before layering a number of brackets around his wrist. Sporting his usual designer scruff along his jawline, the Love You Like I Will hitmaker perfectly worked his coiff over to one side as strands fell to frame his features. Zayn's relaxed appearance comes after his girlfriend, supermodel Gigi Hadid revealed she prefer's his solo music to his hits with British and Irish boyband One Direction. The 21-year-old model admitted she wasn't much of a pop music fan and suggested she couldn't name one of the chart-topping boy band's songs. During her first appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night, Gigi said: 'I grew up in a household where my stepdad was a classical musical producer - Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban - that was the music I was into. 'I think we can all name a One Direction song that we like. Or maybe not. I love Zayn Malik solo a lot more!' Zayn quit the biggest boy band in the world - also comprised of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne - in March 2015. He has made it very clear he didn't like their 'generic' sound, which was one of the things that spurred on his decision to quit the band because of the vocal restrictions he was forced to comply with. He previously explained to The Fader : 'There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band. If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as f**k, so they could use that version. 'Whenever I would suggest something, it was like it didn't fit us. There was just a general conception that the management already had of what they want for the band, and I just wasn't convinced with what we were selling.' The Perfect hitmakers are now on an extended hiatus, a decision they announced several months after Zayn's departure, so they can focus on solo projects and take a much needed break. Dating since last year, the pair unofficially live together, with Zayn recently telling ES magazine : ‘We haven’t officially swapped keys or anything yet, we live together wherever we are.' Talking about how he met the catwalk queen, he approached her at a Victoria's Secret party and asked her out after recognising her from a picture. On their first date at the Bowery Hotel, he revealed: 'It were really nice. She’s a very intelligent woman.

Whether you loved Tuesday's result or were dismayed, there are places to help you focus on the next presidential contest on Nov. 3, 2020. Online sites such as Ireland-based Paddy Power already are putting odds on the next man or woman who will take over the White House after Donald Trump's first four-year term ends in January 2021. Republican Trump, who beat Democratic rival Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, is Paddy Power's clear current favorite to win in 2020 and serve a maximum second term. His closest rivals are vice president-elect Mike Pence, the just defeated vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine and Republican U. S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan. They are followed by outgoing first lady Michelle Obama and Clinton. Some very long shots on Ireland-based Paddy Power's extensive list include Clinton's daughter, Chelsea Clinton, and the actor who plays a chillingly corrupt politician in the hit TV series "House of Cards," Kevin Spacey. 17 /18 0.9 Party-hopping Kate Moss flashes her bra in a sheer blouse as she attends Stella McCartney's menswear launch Being one of the original supermodels of the fashion world she's never short of a social invitation. So it was no surprise to see iconic fashionista Kate Moss arriving at her friend Stella McCartney's latest clothing launch fresh from another shindig across town. However, the 42-year-old model looked anything but flustered as she sashayed into the event in a black trouser suit, flashing her bra in a sheer blouse underneath. Scroll down for video Opting to go for a modern twist on evening wear, the Vogue cover regular donned a baggy black tuxedo style jacket and trousers. Wearing her jacket open the model ensured her outfit retained a suitably racy edge, thanks to her sheer black blouse. The gold lined see-through top allowed the catwalk queen to flash a hint of skin, though her modesty was preserved by a black bra. She rounded off her look with a pair of towering black stilettos, which complemented her low-key yet chic vibe. Keeping her accessories in-keeping with the rest of her outfit, the model only wore a cursory few gold items alongside a black-leather handbag. Wearing her blonde locks in an off-centre parting, Kate let her locks tumble to her shoulders and frame her famous features. Kate was all smiles as she arrived at her friend's big launch at the iconic Abbey Road studios, but only mere minutes before she had been partying. Earlier on in the evening she'd been tucked away in Richard Caring's Annabelle's for David Tang's Rules for Modern Life launch party. The model had been in regal company at the event, as she was seen smiling and chatting away with the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson.

18 /18 1.8 Suzanne Vega finds inspiration from Carson McCullers When I was a 11 or so, through a short story I found called “Sucker.” Not one of her better-known works, but I loved it. I loved the title, and I loved the dynamics between the two main characters, which are two adolescent boys. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Not right away. A few years later, I was in college, and I found a copy of her biography and I saw the photograph on the cover and thought, “Oh, that’s Carson McCullers.” I thought it was a man, but when I realized it was a woman, that intrigued me. Then I got an assignment from my teacher to come in dressed as someone in the arts who was no longer alive and be ready to field questions as though it was an interview. So I chose her, based on the photograph on that book.

Yeah. Exactly. But she had this spirit all the way through it. People think of her existence as dark, but if you look at it the opposite way, she lasted until she was 50 years old, and had this will to survive and to create. So I just have a lot of sympathy for her, her character, her wit and humor, and her ideals.

The first, “Carson McCullers Talks About Love,” was a 2011 production, and it ended up being a little more experimental than I was happy with. So I’ve torn that one up, and the 10 songs from this album are a preview of the play that’s coming out next year, “Lover: Beloved–An Evening With Carson McCullers.” It’s much more of a classic one-woman show, with songs and music in two acts.
