MD FORESIGHT Taking Safety to Heart

Leighton Asia’s Safety Executive has launched a first-rate campaign that encourages us all to take personal responsibility for making our workplaces safe. Let’s work together to ensure this happens.

Leighton Asia has enjoyed a long-standing reputation as a safety leader. Safety is central to the sustainability of our business. Recently however, our outstanding safety record has slipped.

Fatalities and repeated incidents impact our business negatively. Not only do they undermine our reputation for being a safe employer, partner and contractor; in the worst-case scenario, such incidents can potentially result in a suspension of operations.

It has come to my attention that we currently face a challenge with incident rates: too often we incur repeat incidents, which suggests that we are not learning from our mistakes. My takeaway from this is that we need to be swifter in reporting and responding to incidents. Incident alerts should be a top priority: they need to be communicated and acted upon without delay. We are professionals. We do not build things at the expense of people’s safety. I urge you all to take this philosophy to heart and to ensure that others around you do as well.

Our Safety Executive recently launched a first-rate ‘Simply Safe’ campaign that encourages us all to take personal responsibility for making our workplace a safe one. Let’s work together to make this happen. “Incident alerts should be a top priority: they need to be reported and activated without delay.”

AWARDS LEIGHTON BOASTS BEST CONTRACTOR AT SAFETY CONFERENCE

While audits may be daunting, our XRL822 team met the challenge head on and took home the Best Contractor Award for our impressive results. By Jon Kitching Project Manager - H2538 - XRL822

Our XRL822 – Tse Uk Tsuen to Shek Yam Tunnel project (XRL822) team was awarded the Best Contractor Award for MTR XRL Tunnel South Projects at the 10th MTR Contractors Safety Conference on 29th September.

A large part of this achievement goes to our impressive Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Modern Safety Management audit results. The compulsory contractual DNV audit took place on the project in August earlier this year. The audit lasted for approximately 4 working days and covered 16 elements of the Safety Management System in accordance with the DNV protocol.

Auditors inspected the physical site conditions in three main working areas, Pat Heung, Shek Yam and Shing Mun, where staff carried out their daily work. The site physical condition audit consisted of a site tour observing the safe use of plant and machinery, safe access, temporary works, working at height activities, general housekeeping, and interviews with the work force.

Our site received an impressive score of 88% for the site’s physical condition observed during the audit. This is the highest physical condition score of all MTR XRL Tunnel projects during the preceding 6 month period. Our high score was recognised and singled out for praise during the Conference.

Special thanks to our Project Safety Manager Stephen Lapsley for the enormous effort he personally extended to coordinate and secure the excellent DNV audit result and well done to all personnel at site level for their hard work in maintaining a safe working environment.
