Audience and Purpose

This book is intended for all persons who will be using the IBM RT Personal Computer 1 publications library. It contains a library overview and an index to the books you might need to install, operate, or program the IBM RT 1 PC.

This book will lead you to the answers for such commonly asked questions as: How can I customize my system? What books help me set up the system? Where can I find the procedure to copy a file? What is a relative path name?

This book is not intended to tell you everything about a subject, but it is intended to tell you where to look for answers to questions about the RT PC 1.

RT, RT PC, and RT Personal Computer are trademarks of International Business Machines Corporation.

About This Book iii How This Book is Arranged

This book is divided into two chapters:

• Chapter 1, "Bibliography," describes the books that make up the IBM RT PC hardware library and the AIX 2 Operating System library. It shows you how the books relate to the tasks you will want to perform with the RT PC.

• Chapter 2, "Master Index," is an index to the books in the RT PC library. If you need information about a particular item but do not know where to find the information, turn to the Master Index. Each index entry is followed by an abbreviation, such as Cmd. This abbreviation refers to the Commands Reference, and directs you to that book for the information. You can then use the index or table of contents for the specific book to get to a specific page number or chapter.

A list of indexed books and their abbreviations is at the beginning of chapter 2. Also, in Chapter 1, "Bibliography", the book abbreviation follows the book name in each individual description.

1-2 Bibliography and Master Index About This Chapter

This chapter contains an overview of the publications that support the IBM RT PC hardware and the IBM RT PC AIX Operating System. In this chapter, you can find information about ordering additional publications, as well as brief descriptions of the publications. You can use these descriptions to help determine which books you need to use to do specific tasks with the RT PC system. An index to each of these publications is contained in Chapter 2.

Bibliography 1-3 Introducing the RT PC Hardware and AIX Operating System Library

The IBM RT PC and AIX Operating System library is designed to help you easily find and use the information you need when installing and operating the RT PC system.

Three basic types of information describe how to install and use the system: tutorial, guide, and reference.

Tutorial Information

Tutorial information presents procedures and explanations to help the inexperienced computer user understand and use the basic system concepts and functions. For example, tutorial information explains what a file is, why you need files, and how to create files using screen prompts. Basic steps take you through each action required.

Guide Information

Guide information includes more user tasks than tutorial information, and is directed toward someone who is familiar with computers or with the RT PC system, or someone who has worked through tutorial information. Guide information generally contains more discussion of concepts than does tutorial information, and also includes instructional steps for some tasks. Guide information is layered to teach you about the basic concepts, followed by the more complex. This layering allows you to proceed at the pace that is most comfortable for you. Layered information also consists of two paths. The first path contains only the minimum steps required to do a task. These steps are surrounded by a box so that you can more easily find them. Following the step box, a second path is provided to give you more detailed information. This second path shows you, for example, the display screen that appears after doing a step, or it gives you tips or useful information about completing a step.

1-4 Bibliograpny and Master Index Reference Information

Reference information provides complete descriptions of the available functions, not just selected task information. For example, in command reference material, all the commands are listed alphabetically with brief, but complete, descriptions of the command purpose, the command parameters or operands, and examples where appropriate. This type of information is directed toward the more experienced computer user or one who has worked through tutorial and guide information.
