HILARY BOWEN OF NORTHWESTERN, KRISTEN HOHL OF DENISON LEAD ESPN THE MAGAZINE'S ACADEMIC ALL AMERICA® AT-LARGE TEAMS

TOWSON, Md. – Senior All-American Hilary Bowen of the undefeated NCAA champion women’s team and senior swimmer Kristen Hohl of Denison University head the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Bowen and Hohl were named as the Academic All-America® of the Year Award winners in the University and College Divisions, respectively. The Women’s At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, , , ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, and water polo. A Human Developmental and Psychological Services major with a 3.89 G.P.A., Bowen was a four-year starter for the Wildcats who led Northwestern to four consecutive national championships and an 85-3 record in her career. Named as the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player twice, she was the Wildcats’ fourth-leading scorer as a senior with 55 goals and 11 assists despite missing eight games at mid-season with a torn ACL injury. Bowen, who helped Northwestern post a 23-0 record in 2009, finished her career with 219 goals, third on the Wildcats’ all-time scoring list. Named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team for the second year in a row, Bowen scored five goals to lead Northwestern to a 21-7 win over North Carolina in the national championship game in May. As a junior, she scored 17 goals in the NCAA Tournament, tying the tourney record. She finished her career by scoring at least one goal in the last 51 games she played, the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. A native of Rochester, N.Y., she scored 81 goals in 2008 to set a school record. She was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Conference team twice. Honored as a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team for the third straight year, Hohl is a Biology major with a 3.97 G.P.A. A 22-time All- American, she was a member of three NCAA champion relay teams in 2009. A native of Winfield, Illinois, she was part of the Big Red’s national champion 200-medley relay, 400-medley relay and 200-free relay teams. Hohl helped Denison set NCAA Division III records in the 200- and 400-medley relays. The winner of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, Hohl helped Denison finish third at the NCAA Division III Championship Meet while leading the Big Red to back-to-back North Coast Athletic Conference titles. During her career, she won 11 NCAC individual titles and set six school records. Inducted into the Denison chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, she holds membership in Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. Bowen is one of four repeat selections on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team. Senior golfer Amanda Blumenherst of Duke, senior golfer Azahara Munoz of Arizona State and senior swimmer Kelly Zahalka of the U.S. Naval Academy were first team honorees for the second straight year. In addition, senior gymnast Courtney Kupets of Georgia, a first team choice in 2007, was named to the first team again. Kupets was a second team selection in 2007-08. Kupets is one of five first team choices who moved up from last year’s second team. Senior Annette Aksdal, a tennis player at Denver, senior gymnast Kristina Baskett of Utah, senior swimmer Kathryn Kelly of Texas and senior lacrosse standout Katie Rowan of Syracuse were also named to the first team.

Senior golfer Mallory Blackwelder of Kentucky, senior gymnast Sandra Blake of Southeast Missouri State, junior swimmer Elaine Breeden of Stanford, junior swimmer Lisa Caprioglio of Georgia, senior swimmer Christina Loukas of Indiana and junior gymnast Kassi Price of Alabama round out the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team. A senior History major with a 3.81 G.P.A., Blumenherst was a four-time All-American golfer who led Duke with a 72.92 stroke average as a senior. Named as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year four times, Blumenherst tied for fourth place at the NCAA Tournament in 2009. She led Duke to a sixth place finish in the nation. The 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native set a school record with 12 individual career victories. A four-time All-American golfer, Munoz led Arizona State to the NCAA Championship in 2008. A Psychology major with a 3.96 G.P.A., Munoz finished fourth at the NCAA Championship Tournament as a senior. A native of Malaga, Spain, she was the NCAA individual champion as a junior. While carrying a 71.76 stroke average, she had five Top Five finishes in 2008-09. A ten-time Patriot League champion, Zahalka is an Honors History major with a 4.0 G.P.A. who ranks third in her graduating class at the Naval Academy. Named as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete Award winner for women’s three times, she was named as the Patriot League Swimmer of the Year in 2007. A native of Richmond, Va., she is a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. Zahalka helped Navy win the Patriot League title as a sophomore and led the Mids to second place showings in the Patriot League the last two years. She graduated from Navy as the owner of school records in the 200-butterfly and the 400 I.M. A Housing major with a 3.80 G.P.A., Kupets led Georgia to its fourth consecutive NCAA Championship by winning the individual NCAA titles on bars (10.00), beam (9.95), floor exercise (9.95) and all-around (39.80). Named as the winner of the Honda Award as the top collegiate gymnast in the nation, she finished her career with an NCAA record nine individual national titles in three years. A native of Athens, Ga., Kupets missed most of her junior season with an Achilles injury. But she came back strong and had a tremendous senior year. Kupets received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and a Southeastern Conference Postgraduate Scholarship. A three-time All-Sun Belt Conference tennis player, Aksdal helped nationally-ranked Denver to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. A Finance major with a 3.97 G.P.A., she compiled a 15-5 record at number two singles as a senior. She also posted a 13-4 doubles record. A native of Oslo, Norway, she finished her career as Denver’s career leader in singles victories. A five-time All-American gymnast at Utah, Baskett led the Utes to a third place finish at the NCAA Championship Meet and a 17-1 record in 2009. The NCAA regional all-around champion, she was the national runner-up in the all-around. At the NCAA Championship Meet, she finished third in vault, bars and beam. The 2006 NCAA bars champion, she earned 12 All-American honors in her career. A Communication major with a 3.69 G.P.A., she led Utah to three straight NCAA runner-up finishes from 2006 to 2008. The Normandy, Wash. native ended her career with 88 wins, fourth in school history. A Public Relations major with a 3.88 G.P.A., Kelly was a four-time All-American diver at Texas. Honored as the Big 12 Conference Diver of the Year award in 2008, she earned All-Big 12 honors six times. A two-time Big 12 Conference diving champion, she finished sixth in the one-meter diving event at the 2009 NCAA Championship Meet. As a junior, the Longwood, Fla. native finished third in the three- meter diving event and fourth in the one-meter diving event at the NCAA Championship. A two-time first team All-American selection for the Syracuse lacrosse team, Rowan was the second- leading scorer in NCAA Division I as a senior. While leading Syracuse to a 14-5 record and a berth in the NCAA quarter-finals, she scored 45 goals and had 58 assists. Named to the All-Big East Conference first team all four years, she finished her career as Syracuse’s career scoring leader with 232 goals and 164 assists for 396 points. An Inclusive Education and Sociology major with a 3.78 G.P.A., Rowan is the fourth- leading scorer in NCAA Women’s Lacrosse history. A native of Delmar, N.Y., she led the nation in scoring as a junior with 73 goals and 69 assists. - more -

Blackwelder, a Marketing major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., was the top player for Kentucky’s golf team. Honored as the Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she posted a team low 75.52 stroke average. A two-year co-captain for the Wildcats, she was the individual medalist at the University of Tennessee Lady Mocs Invitational in 2009. A native of Versailles, Kentucky, she has been widely recognized for her community service. An Accounting major with a minor in Economics and a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Blake was the top gymnast for Southeast Missouri State. Named to the All-Midwest Independent Conference team four times, she led the Red Hawks to the MIC championship as a senior. Honored as the MIC Gymnast of the Week nine times in her career, she was an NCAA regional individual all-around qualifier four times. A native of Tri- Cities, Wash., she ranks among the Red Hawks’ top ten all-time performers in three events. One of the top swimmers ever to compete at Stanford, Breeden was the 2009 NCAA champion in the 200-butterfly. A Classics major with a minor in Art History and a 3.65 G.P.A., she earned six All-American honors at the 2009 NCAA Championship Meet. An 18-time All-American in her three-year career, Breeden helped Stanford to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championship. The Pacific-10 Conference champion in the 100-butterfly and the 200-butterfly in 2009, Breeden holds the American, U.S. Open and the NCAA records in the 200-fly (1:49.92). One of only three juniors on the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All- America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team, the Lexington, Ky. native has won five Pac-10 championships in her career. A junior International Business major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A., Caprioglio joins Kupets as one of two Scholar-Athletes on the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team. Georgia is the only school with multiple first team selections. A two- time All-American, the Highlands Ranch, Col. native swam the butterfly leg on Georgia’s national championship 200-medley relay team. She also swam the butterfly leg on the Bulldogs’ 400-medley relay team which finished fifth, helping Georgia to a second place finish at NCAA Meet. An Exercise Science major with a 3.65 G.P.A., Loukas was the 2009 NCAA champion in the three- meter diving event with an NCAA-record score of 437.75. An 11-time All-American at Indiana, she was named as the Big Ten Conference Diver of the Year four times. Loukas, who won six Big Ten titles in her career, competed for the United States Olympic team in 2008, finishing ninth in the three-meter diving event. The NCAA runner-up on the one-meter diving event in 2009, she is a native of Riverwoods, Ill. A two-time All-American gymnast at Alabama, Price is a junior with a double major of Marketing and Advertising and a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. A member of the Crimson Tide’s 2009 Southeastern Conference championship team, she earned second team All-SEC honors. A two-time regional champion, she has won 30 individual titles in her career. A native of Plantation, Fla., she was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honorary recognizing the top ten per cent of the business school’s junior class. The 15 members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large University Division first team have an average 3.87 G.P.A. while five of the honorees have perfect 4.00 G.P.A.’s. One of three repeat selections on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team, Hohl is also one of seven swimmers to be named to the first team. Senior swimmer Elizabeth Carlton of Kenyon and senior gymnast Julia Zimmerman of Massachusetts Institute of Technology were also named for the first team for the third consecutive year. After being named to the second team last year, senior Audrey Coon of Western Washington, senior Kelley Healey of Kutztown, senior Julie Kraus of Southern New Hampshire and senior swimmer Cara Van Woerken of Calvin earned spots on the first team this year. Senior swimmer Kelsey Berkeland of St. Cloud State, senior gymnast Amie Boles of Texas Woman’s University, senior tennis player Jordan Casey of Sewanee, senior golfer Raquel Hansen of Ferris State and senior swimmer Tracy Menzel of Kenyon earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team honors for the first time. - more -

A trio of juniors, swimmer Kate Aherne of Truman State, swimmer Chelsea Hoff of Wisconsin- LaCrosse and ice hockey standout Melissa Mackley of Gustavus Adolphus, round out the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team. A Biology major with a 3.96 G.P.A., Carlton led Kenyon to its third straight NCAA Division III women’s swimming and diving championship in March. A 20-time All-American in her career, she was the NCAA champion in the 50-free as a senior, breaking the NCAA record (22.71 seconds). It was the ninth national title of her career. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma XI (Scientific Research Honor Society), she earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was runner-up for the NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship. A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., Carlton is a member of three record-setting relay teams at Kenyon. Zimmerman, who earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team honors for the third time, is a Physics major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, she won the all-around title at the NCGA national championship meet, marking the second time in her career that she won the title. She earned three All-American honors at the NCGA Meet and finished her career with a record-tying 14 awards. A native of Chicago, Ill., she is a member of the Pi Tau Sigma Engineering Honor Society and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Coon, the captain of Western Washington’s crew team, led the Vikings to their fifth straight NCAA Division II championship. A native of Kenai, Alaska, Coon has a double major of Spanish and Elementary Education with a 3.96 G.P.A. A three-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic all-star, Coon rowed with the U.S. Developmental team last summer. A four-time NFHCA Division II All-America pick for the Kutztown field hockey team, Healey is a Biology major with a minor in Criminal Justice and a 3.93 G.P.A. In 2008, she led the Bears with nine goals and 12 assists. While leading the Bears to a 13-6 record, she ended her career with 161 points, second on Kutztown’s scoring list. She also had a school record 39 assists. The Toms River, N.J. native earned All- PSAC honors four times. Named as the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Kraus led the Southern New Hampshire lacrosse team to a 13-6 record and a runner-up spot in the NE-10 Tournament. A Business Administration major with a 3.99 G.P.A., she was named to the IWLCA All-American second team in 2008 and 2009. A two-time all-conference pick, the Derry, N.H. native set school records for ground balls (212), caused turnovers (126), draw controls (147) and games played in a career. A Spanish major with a 3.91 G.P.A. and a minor in Biology, Van Woerkom helped Calvin to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. An eight-time All- American, she earned three All-American honors as a senior. A two-time All-MIAA selection, Van Woerkom is a native of Wyoming, Mich. who will attend the University of Wisconsin Medical School next year. A four-time All-American diver at Saint Cloud State, Berkeland was the NCAA Division II runner-up in the one-meter and the three-meter diving events as a senior. An Elementary Education major with a 3.94 G.P.A., she won two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships. A native of Coon Rapids, Minn., she owns the school records on the one-meter board and the three-meter board. A three-time all-conference first team selection, Boles was a record-setting gymnast at Texas Woman’s University. A Kinesiology major with a 3.87 G.P.A., she won the USAG national championship on floor exercise. The recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, she owns the school record on floor exercise (9.90). A native of Snellville, Ga., she helped TWU win a pair of national championships. A Rhodes Scholar finalist, Casey was a four-year standout for the Sewanee tennis team. A Spanish and Biology major with a 4.03 G.P.A., she was an All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference pick as a senior. Casey, who compiled a 60-18 career singles record, had a 39-24 career mark in doubles play. The Charleston, S.C. native is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Delta Pi. A Marketing and Pro Golf Management major with a 3.99 G.P.A., Hansen was one of the top golfers for Ferris State, the tenth-ranked team in NCAA Division II. A native of West Olive, Michigan, she had a 78.66 stroke average as a senior and 79.89 mark in her career, the fifth best mark in school history. Menzel, who is one two Kenyon swimmers on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team, joined Carlton in leading Kenyon to its third straight NCAA Division III swimming and diving championship. A 16-time All-American in her career, she is a Gender and Women’s Studies major with a 3.83 G.P.A. As a senior, she was the NCAA champion in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.76). A native of Greencastle, Ind., she won three national titles in her career. A Business Administration major with a 3.86 G.P.A., Aherne led the Truman State swimming and diving team to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II Championship Meet. The NCAA champion in the 200 I.M., she earned All-American honors in seven events. A three-time national champion, the Cary, Ill. native is a 20-time All-American in her three-year career. A six-time All-American at the NCAA Division III championship meet, Hoff led Wisconsin-LaCrosse to its second consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. A Fitness and Pre- Professional Physical Therapy major with a 4.00 G.P.A., she was named as the WIAC Swimmer of the Meet while winning three WIAC individual titles and four WIAC relay titles. She set WIAC records in all seven events she won. In her three-year career, the Middleton, Wis. native has earned 12 All-America honors and won 14 WIAC titles. She owns four individual school records and four relay records. Mackley, a first team NCAA Division III All-America ice hockey player at Gustavus Adolphus, rounds out the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team. A Biology and Pre-Medicine major with a 3.95 G.P.A., Mackley was the Gusties’ leading scorer with eight goals and 19 assists. She was the captain of a team that was ranked number one in the nation for most of the season and finished with a 22-2-4 record after losing in overtime in the NCAA quarter-finals. A starter in all 84 games of her career, the Burnsville, Minn. native has led the Gusties to a 72-8-4 three-year record while scoring 21 goals with 51 assists. The 15 members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large College Division first team have a very impressive average G.P.A. of 3.95. Three of the first team selections have 4.00 G.P.A.’s. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
