  • HISTORY of WASHOE COUNTY Introduction
    HISTORY OF WASHOE COUNTY Introduction Lying in the northwest portion of the State of Nevada, named for a tribe of American Indians and containing a land area in excess of 6,000 square miles, Washoe County today consists of two of the nine original counties -- Washoe and Lake (later renamed Roop) Counties -- into which the Territory of Nevada was divided by the first territorial legislature in 1861. The country, "a land of contrasts, extremes, and apparent contradictions, of mingled barrenness and fertility, beauty and desolation, aridity and storm,"1 was claimed by the Spanish Empire until 1822 when it became a part of Mexican territory resulting from Mexico's successful war of independence from Spain. Mexico ceded the area to the United States in 1848 following the Mexican War, and the ceded lands remained part of the "unorganized territory" of the United States until 1850. Spanish and Mexican constructive possession probably had little effect on the life styles of the Northern Paiutes and the Washos -- the two American Indian tribes which inhabited the area. The Northern Paiutes ranged over most of Washoe County2 save the series of valleys lying along the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada. These valleys were the domain of the Washos, a small, nomadic tribe whose members spoke an alien tongue and from which the name of the county is derived3. The 1840's During the 1840's Washoe County was traversed by a number of trappers and explorers, as well as several well-defined emigrant trails leading to California and Oregon. In 1843 mountain man "Old Bill" Williams4 led his trappers from the Klamath Lake region of California to Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River.

    Nevada sesquicentennial FINAL REPORT 1864 – 2014 As Chairman of the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission, it gives me great pleasure to present on behalf of the Commission the Final Report of the year-long celebration in honor of Nevada’s 150th anniversary of statehood – a year that will long and fondly be remembered by the citizens of our state as a fitting tribute to this significant milestone. As you will see in this report, the year was filled with numerous memorable events covering all corners of our state: parades, rodeos, art exhibits, cake cuttings, original plays, a star-studded concert in Las Vegas, balloon races, the historic Union Pacific Battle Born Express traversing the Great Basin and a world record-setting statewide sing along of “Homes Means Nevada.” It was also a busy year for several of the more captivating and colorful characters (past and present) who have called Nevada home. From the irrepressible Mark Twain, who served as an official “ambassador” of the Commission throughout the year, to another man known for “spinnin’ tales,” Waddie Mitchell, the critically acclaimed cowboy poet who brilliantly captured the essence of our state in his poem “Dame Nevada.” The gentle presence of President Abraham Lincoln was also felt through an exquisite display at the Nevada Museum of Art in its exhibit, “The 36th Star,” highlighted by the arrival of one of America’s most sacred documents – The Emancipation Proclamation. The Commission was originally challenged to oversee at least 150 Official, Signature and Legacy Events during the course of the year. It eventually approved or managed 505 events – far surpassing original expectations! Another mandate to the Commission was to perform its mission with private funds – not at taxpayer expense.

  • Rose Bullis Center for Teaching and Learning Is Named in Her Honor
    ROSE M. BULLIS Rose M. Bullis, Nevada's first female school administrator, passed away on January 19, 2009, in Reno. Rose was born in Franktown, Washoe Valley, Nevada in 1912. Her parents, Savina and Antonio Sala, natives of Grossotto, Italy, owned a ranch in Washoe Valley which later became known as the Lightning W and Thunder Canyon Golf Course. Her early education was in a one-room schoolhouse on this ranch, built by her father. In the 1920's her parents sold the ranch and the family moved to Reno. Rose attended Southside Elementary, Northside Junior High, Reno High School, and the University of Nevada, where she received a bachelor's degree and teaching credentials in 1934. She later received a master's degree from the university in Administration and Supervision. Rose's teaching career began in a two- room schoolhouse in Lyon County. After two years she returned to Reno and subsequently taught at Billinghurst Junior High, Veterans Memorial Elementary School, and Northside Middle School. In the 1950's she became the first female administrator in Nevada, and the first Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator. She is credited with pioneering administrative positions for women in the district. In the mid 1960's Rose was appointed Director of School/Community Relations, a position she held till her retirement in 1979. She then volunteered at the College of Education, University of Nevada, Reno, for 22 years, teaching graduate level classes and advising graduate students. Rose's accomplishments as an educator are numerous. She wrote “Let Freedom Ring,“ a textbook for teaching patriotism, and a history of Washoe County schools from 1857 to 1912.

Stewart Street Carson City, Nevada 89701 RE: Section 106 Consultation for proposed Replacement Airport Traffic Control Tower, Administrative Base Building and Parking Structure Construction at McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Ms. Ossa: This letter is in response to your request of October 8, 2008 for additional items in regard to the FAA’s Section 106 consultation packet sent to your office on September 4, 2008. Thank you for your explanation of the additional items you are requesting during our phone conversation on January 13, 2009. I have gathered together some data that hopefully will answer your questions. For the purposes of preliminary analysis, I have assumed a similar indirect APE size to that used by the FCC for a tower height of 200 to 400 feet. This equates to a circular area with a radius of .75 miles (or 1131 acres). I overlaid this circle on a map and was able to eliminate approximately 270 degrees of that circle because the airport property itself takes up most of that land. In my attached satellite and assessor’s map view you will see the remaining 282 acre arc. Since I do not have on-site personnel to take photos, I used Google "Street View" to generate the enclosed pictures. These show a sampling of the neighborhood architecture and existing setting characteristics. Attached is a report generated by the Clark County Assessor’s office that lists all of the parcel numbers within the indirect effects APE and their corresponding construction dates.

BULLIS PAPERS MS/NC 784 by Arline Laferry NEVADA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Reno, Nevada 2006 SCOPE AND CONTENTS Included in the collection are personal items before she was married (Rose Sala), and items after her marriage (Rose Bullis). After her retirement from the Washoe County School District she was Adjunct Professor for College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. In the collection are some of her teaching and workshop materials. In the collection are many of the video tapes of “Lifelong Learning” that she hosted. They were Produced by Sierra Broadcasting (URNV, channel 4, Reno), in cooperation with The College of Education, University of Nevada, Reno. Also, included in the collection are items when she was President of the Washoe Landmark Preservation Board regarding the Lake Mansion and the Glendale School. The collection consists chiefly of Reno and northern Nevada school records collected by Bullis, who was for many years a teacher and then an administrator for the Washoe County, Nevada School District, headquartered in Reno. There are records from the old Reno School District #10, Reno’s Billinghurst Junior High School, the Mary S. Doten, Orvis Ring, Mt. Rose and Reno’s Sierra Vista Elementary Schools, and the Wadsworth School in Wadsworth, Nevada. There is a United PTA Ledger of students in the Reno City Schools, 1918-1920, and miscellaneous records, photographs, and printed materials relating to individual educators, teaching practices, and education in the state of Nevada. Included in the collection are school registers for the Billinghurst Junior High School from 1930 to 1972.

The interior, with all of Patty’s artistic touches and wonderful antiques is as eclectic as the architecture. You step inside and the outside world goes away, which is what we all want for our homes.
