You want to be 110% organised! Download the Bivouac Outdoor gear list to complete your final check before event weekend. New Zealand weather is unpredictable. Make sure you pack for all weather conditions. Temperatures can plummet quickly overnight, so remember to layer up at the Checkpoint before sunset. We have a few items that are compulsory for your team to be carrying around the trail:

Bib number (provided at Registration) to be visible at all times - this means on top of all layers you are wearing Oxfam Trailwalker Walker Directions (provided in your Walker Pack at Registration) A first aid kit. This should also include blister prevention and treatment as well as knee/ ankle bandages and survival blankets Two mobile phones with two different providers (e.g - Spark and Vodafone) High visibility or reflective clothing to wear at night. 14 Photo Credit: Team Scrambled Legs 2020 Hydration It's very important to stay well hydrated throughout the event by drinking plenty of water and electrolyte drinks. Regularly drinking both is important. R-Line is our dedicated hydration supplier for the event, plus they give you team credits of $5 for every 1L bottle you purchase.

Nutrition You’ll need to be prepared to fuel your body during event weekend. We highly recommend keeping your energy up by eating proper meals. In addition, plan to have plenty of snacks with you and your support crew, such as sandwiches, muesli bars, scroggin, fruit, and lollies. physical care Can you guess what the most common injury is every year at Oxfam Trailwalker?

Yep, you guessed it - blisters!

Blisters can be caused by burns, allergies or skin conditions, but the most common culprit is friction. When you have enough friction in a focused spot, cell damage occurs and very soon, you'll find that trouble is afoot.

Preventing blisters is all about awareness and vigilance. Once you know the factors that increase your odds of getting blisters, your goal is to monitor and minimise those factors. Watch this informative Blister Prevention and Care video from REI. mental health Looking after yourself is not just about nutrition, hydration and physical health. Mental support is also very critical for event weekend. You’re out on the trail a long time and you’ll have some tough moments throughout. Ensure your team has planned some ways to keep your brain engaged – it could be as simple as playing a small game with your support crew at a Checkpoint.

15 Retiring from the event

If a member of your team is unable to continue you must first report to the nearest Checkpoint. Remaining team members cannot continue until the withdrawal of the team member has been completed and a retirement pass issued to the remaining team members at the check-in desk. In order to acquire a retirement pass, the team must produce the bib number of the retiring team member when they check in. A retirement sticker will then be placed on the bib of one of the remaining team members. This sticker must be presented at each remaining Checkpoint.

If for any reason you have to leave the event urgently between Checkpoints, you must call the Event Controller using the details in your Walker Directions. The Event Controller will verify the withdrawal and instruct the next Checkpoint to issue a retirement pass to remaining team members. Staff at Checkpoints will not check-in incomplete teams with any members unaccounted for. If two (or three) members of a team have withdrawn, the remaining two (or one) members must walk with another team for safety reasons. Each team will retain their identity and team number throughout the rest of the event; however, they must check in and out together at all remaining Checkpoints.

in case of injury

St John Ambulance is supported by Land Search1 and Rescue to respond to emergencies on the trail. If you come across an injured person, please stop and help. If they are already being helped, check that they have been in contact with the Medical Officer and then continue on the trail. In case of an emergency, follow the procedures below (also available in your Walker Directions 16 and on the back of your bib). Emergency Procedure
