Theology of the Land: A History of Dispensational Approaches Stephen R. Introduction: The Dispensational Family Tree Dispensationalism is one of the most influential theological systems within the universal church today. Largely unrecognised and subliminal, it has increasingly shaped the presuppositions of fundamentalist, evangelical, Pentecostal and charismatic thinking concerning Israel over the past one hundred and fifty years. John Nelson Darby is regarded as the father of dispensationalism and its prodigy, Christian Zionism. It was Cyrus. I. Scofield and D. L. Moody, however, who brought Darby's sectarian theology into mainstream evangelical circles. R. C. Sproul concedes that dispensationalism is now '...a theological system that in all probability is the majority report among current American evangelicals.' [1] Most of the early popular American radio preachers such as Donald Grey Barnhouse, Charles E. Fuller, and M. R. DeHaan were dispensationalists. Today, virtually all the 'televangelists' such as Jerry Falwell, Jim Bakker, Paul Crouch, Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart and Billy Graham are also dispensationalists. Other leading dispensationalists include Charles Ryrie, Dwight Pentecost, John Walvoord, Eric Sauer, Charles Dyer, Tim LaHaye, Grant Jeffrey and Hal Lindsey. Notable political proponents include Jimmie Carter and Ronald Reagan. Probably the most significant Christian organisations to espouse dispensationalism have been the Moody Bible Institute, Dallas Theological Seminary and the International Christian Embassy, Jerusalem. 2. Dispensationalism Defined The basic text upon which dispensationalism is based is the Authorised translation of 2 Timothy 2:15, where the Apostle Paul calls upon Timothy to, '.. -

The city has a television station and a university and is a centre for the manufacture of soap, perfume and sugar processing. The Exclusive Brethren separated from the Open Brethren in 1848 and follow a rigid code of practice that among other things restricts the contact their members can have with those outside their group. The Open Brethren believe that their individual churches should have freedom in their dealings with others. The two groups remain separate and do not hold joint events. There are about 6,000 Exclusive Brethren living in New Zealand at the moment, which is about three times their estimated numbers in 2006, although exact figures are not available. The majority of local Exclusive Brethren live in Wellington’s northern corridor. The Wellington Exclusive Brethren has a growing congregation of over 300 members, using temporary premises in Linden as their Church. The building fits the description of their typical church with its frosted windows, high security fence and no signage on the premises to identify it as a Brethren church. Exclusive Brethren children attend Plymouth Brethren Christian Westmount schools. The local Johnsonville School (Decile 8) has about 100 students from Year 3 to 13. Education is conducted as per the New Zealand curriculum. Their schools get very good reports. Parents take a very active interest in the education of their children showing that they are like all parents who consider the education of their children as being very important. The Exclusive Brethren treat girls and boys equally at their schools. Analysing a major cultural phenomenon in recent times De Villers, Pieter GR University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article represents a research overview of the nature, historical roots, social contexts and growth of millennialism as a remarkable religious and cultural phenomenon in modern times. It firstly investigates the notions of eschatology, millennialism and rapture that characterize millennialism. It then analyses how and why millennialism that seems to have been a marginal phenomenon, became prominent in the United States through the evangelistic activities of Darby, initially an unknown pastor of a minuscule faith community from England and later a household name in the global religious discourse. It analyses how millennialism grew to play a key role in the religious, social and political discourse of the twentieth century. It finally analyses how Darby’s ideas are illuminated when they are placed within the context of modern England in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century. In a conclusion some key challenges of the place and role of millennialism as a movement that reasserts itself continuously, are spelled out in the light of this history. Eschatology and millennialism Christianity is essentially an eschatological movement that proclaims the fulfilment of the divine promises in Hebrew Scriptures in the earthly ministry of Christ, but it also harbours the expectation of an ultimate fulfilment of Christ’s second coming with the new world of God that will replace the existing evil dispensation. -

The Brethren Concept of Sainthood* Harold H Rowdon [p.91] INTRODUCTION I am using the title, ‘The Brethren Concept of Sainthood’, for this survey of the view of sanctification associated with those Christians commonly known as ‘Brethren’ because they have always reacted strongly against the idea that the term ‘saint’ was to be reserved for a tiny proportion of Christians who had attained such an unusual degree of holiness as to merit the term as an accolade. Indeed, one of their favourite designations of believers in general was the scriptural term, ‘saints’. But to talk about the Brethren concept of sainthood is to raise the difficult question: Do the Brethren speak with one voice on the subject? This calls for some preliminary discussion of Brethren identity before proceeding to our subject. After several decades of widespread publicity arising from the excesses of the Taylorite Brethren, even the media now mostly realize that there are Brethren and Brethren! In a way, it is rather odd that after more than a century of virtual non-communication between Darbyite Brethren and those from whom Darby withheld fellowship in 1849, the distinction should have taken so long to become recognized. It didn’t take that long for the distinction between Protestants and Roman Catholics, for example, to become obvious. (But I acknowledge that the Brethren have hardly occupied the centre of the stage between 1850 and 1950!) What is surprising is the extent to which non-Darbyite Brethren have retained―or absorbed―so much of Darby’s distinctive teaching. -

It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. In addition to its publishing activities, the Finnish Literature Society maintains research activities and infrastructures, an archive containing folklore and literary collections, a research library and promotes Finnish literature abroad. Preface (2007) This paper had its origin in discussions with a group of Exclusive pupils and their parents in the comprehensive school at which my wife, Jean Bigger, was Deputy Head. This was the time when the National Curriculum was being developed, and guidance documentation was appearing thick and fast. The Exclusive parents were suddenly presented with a problem. I had some vague inkling of what this problem entailed from my own upbringing (which had been very negative to Exclusives) but set up some interviews in two Exclusive communities, Oxford and Swindon. The word ‘community’ is a pertinent one: because of teachings outlined below, Exclusives need to live and work closely together: their rules do not allow association with others, even for eating, so young Exclusives tend to be employed by Exclusive firms. There are several such firms in Oxford, and one in my own village in Swindon. Marriages interlink these communities. The biblical requirement for women to cover their hair when praying is applied to all aspects of the day since the whole of life should be prayerful. So Exclusive girls and women wear a simple headscarf. Education up to 18 is encouraged and valued so long as the content is not corrupt (for example sexually explicit). The media, and expecially television, is regarded as potentially corrupting so parents ask for their children to be excused from lessons involving video (although to listen but not watch is considered acceptable).
