December People Band Biographies
December People Band Biographies Robert Berry: Robert Berry was born into a musical family. His father had a dance band that travelled the ballroom circuit in the late 40's and 50's, where his mother was the featured vocalist. When Berry was born his father opened a music store. There, through the busy store’s affiliation with Vox guitars and amps - the brand the Beatles used, Robert was introduced to many of the local musicians. Local hit makers like the Count Five, Syndicate of Sound, Harper’s Bizarre and others often frequented the store. Berry began studying piano in earnest at 6 years old and by age 12 was recruited to join his first rock band with 4 older high school seniors. He continued classical and jazz studies before entering San Jose State University, as a music major. Berry first gained international attention with San Francisco based Hush, and headed to the UK to play in GTR along with Steve Howe of Yes fame, and then achieved a top ten charting single and toured with 3, his partnership with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. Before launching December People, Robert played with Sammy Hagar and toured with Ambrosia. When not touring with December People Robert is the bass player with the Greg Kihn Band. Gary Pihl: Raised in the suburbs of Chicago for the first 12 years of his life, Gary Pihl relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. Gary had his recording debut at age 19 with Day Blindness. He says, “After my time in Day Blindness, I was in a band called Fox with Roy Garcia and Johnny V (Vernazza), who went on to play in Elvin Bishop’s band. -

A catalyst and an illuminator, but also a magnet for scandal, Robert Mapplethorpe had but one goal: to ‘make it’ as an artist and as an art celebrity. He could not have picked a better time: the Manhattan of Warhol’s Factory, Studio 54, and an era of unbridled hedonistic sexuality. His first solo exhibition in 1976 already unveils his subjects: flowers, portraits and nudes. Mapplethorpe quickly gains notoriety through his explicitly sexual photographs from the gay sadomasochistic scene as well as nude pictures of black men. Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato were given unrestricted access to Mapplethorpe’s archives for their documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, in which this exceptional artist talks candidly about himself in recently discovered interviews. -

They will almost certainly inspire Chile, Argentina, Canada, France, and you to ask questions about yourself America, all before the age of 16. He “I moved to New York City because of people like this. I wanted to be around the art crowd and the and your sexuality. The History of Photography: the Research Library of the Mack Lee
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography. -

Despite his repeated declarations that he was not a part of George Maciunas's self-declared movement, my father's involve- ment in the first Fluxus book left him irrevocably tangled in it. I myself seem to have been influenced by my father's experimental, algorithmic approach to poetry, and ended up a computational astrophysicist, studying how stars form out of the chaotic, turbulent interstellar gas. I think there was some hope that with this background I might explain the true, or correct, meaning of the term "critical mass." Unfortunately, as a scientist, I have no special access to truth, and correctness depends entirely on con- text. Let me explain this a bit before discussing the term "critical mass" itself. Science is often taught as if it consisted of a series of true facts, strung together with a narrative of how these facts were discovered. The actual practice of sci- ence, however, requires the assumption that nothing is guaranteed to be true except as, and only so far as, it can be confirmed by empirical evidence. -

HEATWAVE is now gearing up to put out their fourth edition and will launch it with a fun punk rock’n’roll party in London on Saturday 1 April. London is becoming a second home to Swiss band THE JACKETS it seems these days, so popular are they with the denizens of this town. Combining sixties garage, mod, '77 punk rock, psychedelia and their devotion to bands like MC5, The Monks, and The Music Machine, The Jackets bring a dynamic recipe to the garage rock'n'roll menu. What is important to note is that the Jackets are a rock’n’roll band - but it's the roll that makes the rock just that little bit better! Watch video on YouTube here Opening the live music for the evening are New Zealand quartet THE CAVEMEN, who made London their home late in 2015 and have so far hit the ground running, with their second album coming out last year on local and international label Dirty Water Records. These Auckland kids really hit town with a bang! Heatwave’s Penelope York wrote: ‘Listening to their debut self- titled album is like being in my own pit, surrounded by savage ghosts from former gigs'. -

Sixties' Garage-Psych Legends Return with "This Is My Voice"
The Chocolate Watchband Photo: Greg Gutbezahl Feb 17, 2019 19:33 GMT THE CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND: Sixties’ Garage-Psych Legends Return With "This Is My Voice" Breaking out of the West Coast counter culture scene of the 1960s, The Chocolate Watchband, influenced by the British Invasion sounds, shook with an intensity and drive that saw them drench themselves in psychedelia while at the same time foraging an early proto-punk trough. Their influence has proved more potent than their sales were at the time, overshadowed by other groups and ripped off by music fat cats, theirs is a tale of returning to the stage to find that their fanbase has grown in the intervening half a century. So, sit back and take a ride with one of the original voices of the psych garage-rock scene. View embedded content here Sometimes it’s pretty cool to see the old timers getting their due. Over the years, a lot of the legends of ’60s garage rock who didn’t quite get the same level of recognition back in the day as some of their more famous peers have made a comeback after a lengthy hiatus. Bands like The Sonics and The Sloths come to mind as just a couple of the acts who’ve shown in recent years just how good a bunch of old guys playing garage rock can be. And now California garage/psych/proto-punk legends The Chocolate Watchband are back again with a new album, This Is My Voice. View embedded content here While the Chocolate Watchband reunited in 1999 after a 29-year hiatus, they've not released much new material since then.
