  • Bells in and Around Birmingham: a Survey and History
BELLS IN AND AROUND BIRMINGHAM: A SURVEY AND HISTORY (PART 2: LOCATIONS F-Y) Chris Pickford Version date: 29/09/2020 GAZETTEER FIRS ESTATE – see CASTLE BROMWICH, St.Wilfrid (R.C.), Firs Estate FOUR OAKS – All Saints, Walsall Road All Saints was built in 1908 to the designs of Edwin F. Reynolds, architect. Messrs. J. Barnsley and Sons were the builders. The foundation stone of the nave was laid on 4 April 1908 and the nave and temporary sanctuary were consecrated on 31 October 1908. Built in the Perpendicular style in brick, the church was intended to have a chancel, organ chamber, vestry and tower over the south porch of similar design. These were never built, but the chancel was rebuilt in a more substantial manner in the early 1960s and consecrated on 21 November 1965. The parish of Four Oaks was created from the parish of Hill in 1920. The portion of the church completed in 1908 had a stone bellcote over the chancel arch. The original bell – shown in a photograph of the church taken in 1943 – was about 20 inches in diameter and it was hung for swing chiming with a wooden stock. Having become unsafe, it was taken down in about 1965 when the chancel was added, but “went missing” shortly afterwards. There is now a loudspeaker in the bellcote. In 2000, however, a small sanctus bell was erected on outside wall on the south side of the sanctuary to mark the Millennium. It is a small bell with a diameter of 9 inches, inscribed “The Millennium Bell”.

  • Watching Brief at Land at Blakesley Hall School Yardley Green Road Stetchford
Watching brief at land at Blakesley Hall School Yardley Green Road Stetchford SMR 20628 Martin Cook BA MIFA 20th November 2008 Revised 4th December 2008 The School House Church Lane Tardebigge Worcestershire B60 3AH 07850 918755 Watching brief at land at Blakesley Hall School, Yardley Green Road, Stetchford Introduction A desk-based assessment carried out in 2005 (Cook 2005) identified the site of a brick kiln adjacent to Yardley Green Road, Stetchford (SMR 20628; SP 1263 8636; Fig 1). It was established in the late 19th century when it is shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map but ceased to be used in the early 20th century. The associated clay pit, within which the brick kiln was constructed, was used as a landfill site up to about the time of the Second World War. In the late 1950s a school was built on the site. The replacement of this school, constructed during 2006/7/8 was likely to affect buried deposits relating to the brick kiln. Originally, archaeological evaluation was proposed for the area in the vicinity of the brick kiln. However, following a site meeting between Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd, Birmingham City Council and Martin Cook BA MIFA it was decided not to carry this out due to the restricted nature of the site and the anticipated depth of the archaeological deposits. A watching brief was subsequently substituted for the evaluation and a brief (copy in Appendix 1) was produced by Birmingham City Council to reflect this. This report is therefore in fulfilment of that brief. Aims The aims of the watching brief were to: 1) to record the structures comprising the brickworks and compare them with other contemporary brickworks in Birmingham and elsewhere, as identified in the desk-based assessment (Cook 2005) 2) to identify any phasing in the development of the brickworks 3) to identify the size and fabric of bricks produced on the site.

  • Designated Outstanding Collections Contents
Designated Outstanding collections Contents 3 Introduction 4 East Midlands 7 East 11 London 22 North East 24 North West 29 South East 33 South West 39 West Midlands 44 Yorkshire Introduction The Designation Scheme exists to celebrate collections of outstanding resonance, that deepen our understanding of the world and what it means to be human. The Arts Council is passionate about collections and their ability to impact upon and enrich our lives, and the Designation Scheme is an important and visible assertion of our belief in their enduring cultural value. The Designated collections cover such diverse areas as political and ecclesiastical archives, art history, literature and theatre, economics, the history of transportation on land and on water, and the medical profession. They demonstrate eclectic tastes and intellectual journeys, the emergence of disciplines and theories and the careers of our famous figures. They bring art, science and industry together in stimulating ways. Our collections hold the key to who we are and they are an irreplaceable resource. Designation is an enduring award and it is crucial to the Arts Council’s mission to bring great art and culture to everyone. Designated collections are located in both rural and urban centres across the country, from Cornwall to Cumbria. The Designation Scheme was introduced at the behest of government, and since 1997, has identified pre-eminent collections held in museums, libraries and archives across England. The founding aims were to raise the profile of these vital collections and encourage safeguarding of them. Designated collections benefit in numerous ways. During 2013-15 the Designation Scheme was reviewed and in 2014 we published Pearls and wisdom, our vision for the future of the Scheme.
