Dear Voter, From Middleton-in- in the west to Tudhoe in the east my team and I have listened to your concerns through canvassing, public meetings and visiting shops and businesses. I would like to personally thank all those residents that may not have been Conservative voters, yet were kind enough to share their views on the big local problems. I have brought senior Conservatives to the area to see the issues for themselves. Theresa May (Work & Pensions) has visited the area; Dominic Grieve (Shadow Justice Secretary) met with a cross section of people to talk about policing and crime; Geoffrey Clinton Brown (Shadow Business Team) met with a group of local business people, as did David Davis (former Home Secretary). They were all struck by how this constituency has been taken for granted by Labour over the years. Their record of failure hits you in the face- we have too many empty shops and countless number of empty factories that once employed thousands of local people. Other visits include Mark Hoban, a Durham man, part of the Shadow Treasury team, who has specific knowledge of this area and spoke with local shop owners and Jim Paice, part of the Shadow Rural Affairs Team, met with local sheep and dairy farmers. Meeting so many residents has affirmed why I want to represent this area. I want to make a difference because this is my home too. I grew up in , lived in Bishop Auckland and my family and friends live throughout the constituency. The Bishop Auckland constituency has been taken for granted by Labour for too long and Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Spennymoor are clear examples of Labour’s negligence of decent honest people. If you elect me as you MP I pledge to make difference for to the area which is my home.

Only together can we achieve the change needed.

Make a real difference on May 6th

An interview with SAM ZAIR, the Local Liberals People Before Politics Candidate for the Bishop Auckland Constituency. So Sam, what prompted you to stand as a Local Liberals candidate in this General Election? Sam – As a Town, District and County Councilor I have always felt that the best way we can improve our community is by becoming involved. I feel very strongly, as a local businessman, living and working in Bishop Auckland we need to stand up and fight for what we believe is the best way forward for our constituency. Our town centres should be the heartbeat of our communities. Do we really need both Sainsbury’s and Tesco on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland? Yes, more jobs will be created, but can our road links handle the increased traffic and will we lose more shops and jobs in our town centres? Our road links need to be improved something Labour forgot about. We need investment in modern industrial units to get manufacturing back into our region. 220 EBAC jobs lost to Newton Aycliffe? Our unemployed are crying out for work. My Party used a local printing company to print my election leaflets. Both Labour and Lib Dems had their leaflets printed in Cardiff and Derby. Does this help our local economy? Question - You hold strong views about Bishop Auckland General Hospital Sam - Yes, we tried unsuccessfully to stop the downgrading of this state of the art NHS hospital long before Helen Goodman became an MP. Tony Blair claimed this as an NHS flagship for the future. Successive Labour Councils have done nothing to stop the savage cuts in services. Our hospital has a larger geographical catchment area than Darlington or Durham, yet the NHS Trust feel we are surplus to requirements. This is a 25 year cost to the taxpayers of our region. Bureaucracy gone mad. Labour voted almost unanimously to downgrade the hospital. They should hang their heads in shame. I will push the NHS to review their decisions on our hospital and high administration costs. We now have more administrators than hospital beds. The Labour Party made adverse comments on County Councillors' allowances to which they are entitled. This is gutter politics. Check online Helen Goodman’s expenses. My allowance as a Bishop Auckland Town Councilor all goes to Butterwick Hospice.

Question – Why did you not stand as the Lib Dem Candidate for Bishop Auckland? Sam - Mark Wilkes a Lib Dem Durham City Councilor was nominated as the Parliamentary Party Candidate. I asked for the nomination to be deferred to allow me time to submit my nomination but was unsuccessful. As a Durham City County Councillor living in a Durham Ward I believe he could have divided loyalties between Bishop Auckland and Durham. If it came to the vote for downgrading or closure, which hospital would he choose? I believe that I am the person best suited to win this seat from Labour and to achieve this I had to leave the party. Question - So why should we vote for you Sam? Sam – Voting for me may be a difficult decision to take but I will not promise anything that I can not achieve I WILL - • promise to remain honest and transparent and do my best for our constituency • leave the broken promises and the gutter politics to the three main parties • fight for unjust causes, including the closure of our nursing homes and local post offices • fight for better road and transport links to attract new manufacturing and reduce our unemployment levels • fight against further downgrading of our Hospital and do all I can to get some of the services returned • vote for a reduction in paperwork so the Police can be out on our streets rather than behind a desk. I cannot move mountains, but I can chip away at the corners, build a few bridges and maybe, just maybe, my perseverance will begin to pay dividends for our community and changes for the better will begin to come through. My door is always open to anyone.

I have received some excellent responses around the constituency. Many voters are wishing me well and are offering their support and votes and I thank them for that.
