The financial stability of the pension sys- tem depends on a number of factors (demographic and economic) – fac- tors, that rarely and with difficulties and can reach the long-term consolidation and financial sustainability of pension system, therefore undertaking reforms towards improving the pension system remains inevitable. Pension reforms, i.e. the improvement of the pension system had to do mainly with: security in the realization of the rights to pension and disa- bility insurance, short and long term security of solvency for pension and disability insurance, maximum insurance and minimal risk, assu- ring the right to a pension for all generations, strengthening public confidence, as well as stimulating the development of capital markets and encourage economic growth.

It places Roman decision-making and action within its proper context by emphasizing the role that Greek polities and Illyrian tribes played in both the outbreak and conclusion of the war. It argues that the primary motivation behind the Roman decision to declare war against the Ardiaei in 229 was to secure the very profitable trade routes linking Brundisium to the eastern shore of the Adriatic. It was in fact the failure of the major Greek powers to limit Ardiaean piracy that led directly to Roman intervention. In the earliest phase of trans-Adriatic engagement Rome was essentially uninterested in expansion or establishing a formal hegemony in the Greek East and maintained only very loose ties to the polities of the eastern Adriatic coast.

  • Philip of Macedon: Accession, Ambitions, and Self-Presentation
CHAPTER 16 PHILIP OF MACEDON: ACCESSION, AMBITIONS, AND SELF-PRESENTATION R. Lane Fox Philip took over the Macedonian kingdom when it was in a critical state. The Illyrian invasion, the death of Perdiccas III on the battlefijield, and the loss of thousands of Macedonians compounded the local problems over Methone, Pydna, and much of the “New Territories” east of the Axios and the lack of control over the cantons to the south-west. Nonetheless within twenty-three years Philip had transformed this broken kingdom and had conquered peoples from Lake Ohrid to Sparta, from the Danube to The- bes. Philip is the greatest royal founder in Greek history. His new model army, his royal style, and vision justify the claim that he is a founder of the Hellenistic age. My focus is on Philip and his “new Macedon,” a subject which I will address thematically in the second part of this chapter and the next one. His fijirst year, however, is one which modern books, in my view, tend to misdate or underestimate. So I will begin with a closer look at it, believing that it is especially revealing of Philip’s skills. When Perdiccas III died, Philip was aged twenty-two. Where was he at that time and when did he take over? The main sources are the start of Diodorus 16 (probably using Ephorus) and Justin’s epitome of Trogus who probably drew on Theopompus. The chronology has been penetrat- ingly clarifijied by Hatzopoulos since 1982. Philip took over early in the Athenian archon-year 360/59, not 359/8 bc.

N. c. L. Hammond HE BELIEF that Philip did learn some lessons in Thebes was clearly stated in three passages.1 After denouncing the slug Tgishness of the Athenians, Justin (6.9.7) wrote that Philip "having been held hostage in Thebes for three years and having been instructed in the fine qualities of Epaminondas and Pelo pidas" was enabled by the inactivity of the Greeks to impose on them the yoke of servitude. The source of this passage was clearly Theopompus. 2 Justin wrote further as follows: "This thing [peace with Thebes] gave very great promotion to the outstanding natural ability of Philip" (7.5.2: quae res Philippo maxima incrementa egregiae indolis dedit), "seeing that Philip laid the first foundations of boyhood as a hostage for three 1 The following abbreviations are used: Anderson=J. Guillaume Bonnet and Benjamin Fagard Complex Prepositions in Albanian: a first assessment Abstract In this chapter, we investigate the marking of nominal relations in Albanian, from case marking to simple and complex prepositions, on the basis of the (limited) literature and of a corpus study. We rely on two corpora, the Albanian National Corpus (ANC) and the parallel corpus OPUS, totaling 20 and 46 million words respectively. This enables us to provide frequency lists and distributional features of simple and complex prepositions, making it possible to account for the formal and functional differences between different types of simple and complex adpositions. We also address the question of the possible origin of CAs in Albanian, showing a possible effect of language contact.

  • National Myths in Interdependence
National Myths in Interdependence: The Narratives of the Ancient Past among Macedonians and Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia after 1991 By Matvey Lomonosov Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts CEU eTD Collection Advisor: Professor Maria Kovács Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract The scholarship on national mythology primarily focuses on the construction of historical narratives within separate “nations,” and oftentimes presents the particular national ist elites as single authors and undisputable controllers of mythological versions of the past. However, the authorship and authority of the dominant national ist elites in designing particular narratives of the communal history is limited. The national past, at least in non- totalitarian societies, is widely negotiated, and its interpretation is always heteroglot . The particular narratives that come out of the dominant elites’ “think-tanks” get into a polyphonic discursive milieu discussing the past. Thus they become addressed to alternative narratives, agree with them, deny them or reinterpret them. The existence of those “other” narratives as well as the others’ authorship constitutes a specific factor in shaping mythopoeic activities of dominant political and intellectual national elites. Then, achieving personal or “national” goals by nationalists usually means doing so at the expense or in relations to the others. If in this confrontation the rivals use historical myths, the evolution of the later will depend on mutual responses. Thus national historical myths are constructed in dialogue, contain voices of the others, and have “other” “authors” from within and from without the nation in addition to “own” dominant national ist elite.
