Famous Australian singers and songwriters There are famous Australian singers across every musical genre. Our greatest opera singers were Dame Nellie Melba and Dame Joan Sutherland. Australian country music stars have included Smoky Dawson and Slim Dusty, and more recently John Williamson, James Blundell, Kasey Chambers, and Keith Urban. Pop princess Kylie Minogue hit the international charts many years after Grease star Olivia Newton John and icon John Farnham. Jimmy Barnes, Peter Garret, Michael Hutchence and Daniel Johns claimed fame as lead singers in rock bands. Famous Aboriginal singers include Jimmy Little, Christine Anu, Archie Roach, Ruby Hunter and Geoffrey Gurrumul. Songwriter and entertainer Peter Allen has been immortalized in a stage musical. Kylie Minogue is an Australian singer, songwriter, and actress. She achieved recognition starring in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, where she played tomboy mechanic Charlene Robinson. Since then, Minogue has been a recording artist and has achieved commercial success and critical acclaim in the entertainment industry. Minogue has been recognised with several honorific nicknames including "Princess of Pop" and "Goddess of Pop". She is recognised as the highest-selling Australian artist of all time by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Keith Urban is a New Zealand-born Australian country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, musician, TV show judge and record producer. In 1991, he released a self-titled debut album and charted four singles in Australia before moving to the United States the following year. He found work as a session guitarist before starting a band known as The Ranch, which recorded one studio album on Capitol Nashville and charted two singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Natalie Imbruglia is an Australian singer-songwriter, model and actress. In the early 1990s, she appeared in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. Three years after leaving the programme, she began a singing career with her hit "Torn". AC/DC are an Australian rock band, formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. A hard rock/blues rock band they have also been considered a heavy metal band, although they have always dubbed their music simply "rock and roll" INXS was an Australian rock band, formed as The Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. They began playing covers in Western Australian pubs and clubs, occasionally playing some of their original music. Mainstays were main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarists Tim Farriss and Kirk Pengilly, bassist Garry Gary Beers and main lyricist and vocalist Michael Hutchence. For twenty years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose "sultry good looks" and magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements. .

Oh how our world has changed ! We are now more inter connected through diverse technologies than at any time in History. Had our ancestors a fraction of the technologies we have today how would we have evolved? Scotland in early 1800s was a largely agricultural nation. Work was usually manual and cottage-based. A shift in this trend came with the industrial age. The industrialisation of Scotland began in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The adoption of mechanisation led to the building of factories and a move away from cottage industries. Production was linked to the use of machines as well as the establishment of the railway and canal networks, which transported the raw materials from the dockland (notably cotton) and were able to distribute the finished goods. With the arrival of the steam engine, numbers of miners increased in order to produce the coal needed to power the engines. Iron and steel works also became a major employer at the time. In Scotland the hundred years between 1840 and 1940 saw enormous change in the countries economic and social structure. Our ancestors living in 1840 would have been astounded at the scale and pace of change in the century ahead. Since the dawn of civilization, there existed a need to communicate information over distance.

With no known surviving oral tradition for how and who would make the fish -hooks and use them in this area, the historical and archaeological records become more important. What do we know? Shell fish -hooks were observed and reported on by a number of people from the First Fleet. They mention being made and used by local women. “Considering the quickness with which they are finished, the excellence of the work, if it be inspected, is admirable”, Watkin Tench said on witnessing Barangaroo making one on the north shore. First Fleet painting of fish -hook (T. Watling) The manufacturing process involved the use of a strong shell. So far the only archaeological evidence is from the Turbo species. Pointed stone files were used to create the shape and then file down the edges to the recognisable form. Use -wear analysis on files has confirmed that they were used on shell as well as wood, bone and plant material.

Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

Making it in the Melbourne Music Scene Post-Punk and Post-Post-Punk Dr Sarah Taylor School of Science RMIT University Victoria, Australia [email protected] This paper uses contemporary documentation, interviews and maps to highlight the different types of music careers, and modes of “making it”, seen in the 1986 feature film Dogs in Space. The film concerns a fictional band of the same name, based on The Ears, a minor group active in the Melbourne band scene between 1979-1981. INXS’s Michael Hutchence plays Sam, the singer in post punk group Dogs in Space. The contrast between Hutchence and Sejavka was seen as remarkable: a major-league rock star, having “made it” by the time of the film’s production, portraying a relatively obscure post-punk musician. However, the trajectories of these bands did overlap in time and place. An historical geographical analysis of INXS and The Ears can help to add context to the Melbourne music scene depicted in the film, as well as to the later cult status popularity of the film, made during a transitional time between norms in the Australian music industry.
