Working Paper Series, Paper No. 06-27 Revenue Sharing in Sports Leagues: The Effects on Talent Distribution and Competitive Balance Phillip Miller† November 2006 Abstract This paper uses a three-stage model of non-cooperative and cooperative bargaining in a free agent market to analyze the effect of revenue sharing on the decision of teams to sign a free agent. We argue that in all subgame perfect Nash equilibria, the team with the highest reservation price will get the player. We argue that revenue sharing will not alter the outcome of the game unless the proportion taken from high revenue teams is sufficiently high. We also argue that a revenue sharing system that rewards quality low-revenue teams can alter the outcome of the game while requiring a lower proportion to be taken from high revenue teams. We also argue that the revenue sharing systems can improve competitive balance by redistributing pivotal marginal players among teams. JEL Classification Codes: C7, J3, J4, L83 Keywords: competitive balance, revenue sharing, sports labor markets, free agency * I thank Dave Mandy, Peter Mueser, Ken Troske, Mike Podgursky, Jeff Owen, and two anonymous referees for valuable comments on earlier drafts. Their suggestions substantially improved the paper. Any remaining errors or omissions are my own. †Phillip A. Introduction Free agency has been cheered by players and agents but has been scorned by team owners. Player salaries under free agency have expanded to an extent that many fans believe small market teams now have difficulty in competing for playing talent and on the playing field, worsening the competitive balance between teams.

Subjects, 159 10th graders from Illinois and Long Island, read a target passage and then were assessedon baseball knowledge and vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary knowledge tendedto affect the number of units recalled overall, whereas prior knowledge influenced which units were recalled. Prior topic knowledge influenced whether subjects produced a "gist" statement in their recall and how well they recalled numbers relevant to Seaver's career. High-knowledge subjects also tended to focus moreon information given about Seaver's career than did low-knowledge subjects.

Please return to us no later than Mon- day, February 11. 2. The example ballot’s purpose is to demonstrate the balloting rules. Obviously the names on the example ballot are not the nominee names. That was done to prevent you from being biased by the rankings you see there. 3. Each nominee has a profile in the biography packet. Some are more detailed than others and reflect what we received from the institutions and/or obtained in our own research. The ballot instructions are somewhat detailed, so be sure to read the directions at the top of the official ballot. Use the example ballot as a reference. Please try to consider the nominees based on their collegiate careers. In many cases nominees have gone on to professional careers but keep the focus on his college career as a player and/or coach. The Veterans (pre-1947) nominees often lack biographical details relative to those in the post-1947 categories. In those cases, the criteria may take on a broader spectrum to include the impact they had on the game/history of college baseball, etc.

Joe Torre Joe Torre was named manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 1, 2007, becoming the 26th manager in team history. Prior to the joining the Dodgers, Torre spent the past twelve seasons as manager of the New York Yankees. In 2008, Torre led the Dodgers to the division title and the club won their first playoff series in 20 years. In becoming the 31st manager in Yankees team history, he joined Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra and Dallas Green as the fourth skipper to wear both Yankee and New York Met uniforms. Torre's Yankees made the playoffs every year under his tenure. He led the Yankees to 6 World Series appearances during the 12 year span, winning 4 World Series Championships, most recently in 2000. The 2000 title was the 26th overall for the Yankees, the most of any team in professional sports. They are just the third team to win four titles in five years, the other two also being Yankees teams. The Bronx Bombers captured four straight titles beginning in 1936 and later won five consecutive championships from 1949-53. The Yankees also became the first team since the Oakland Athletics from 1972-74 to win three straight world titles. Torre led the 1996 Yankees to their first World Series title since 1978. He was named Sportsman of the Year by The Sporting News and Co-American League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America. After a return to post-season competition in 1997, Torre led the Yankees to 114 wins during the 1998 regular season, an American League record, and a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series.
