He will be doing a signing session at Westminster Book Store from 2 - 3 PM, Saturday, December 6th. 3. Bel Canto Singers Ring in the Season The Bel Canto Singers of Fredericton will present their annual Wassail concert on Saturday December 6th, at 7:30 pm., at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, 512 Charlotte Street, Fredericton. Under the direction of Dr. Timothy G. Cooper, this auditioned choir has set a high standard of performance in the Maritimes. Their Christmas concert, which always includes punch, hot cider and home baking by the choir members - and, of course, the much-loved carol sing-a- long - has been a kickoff for the holiday season for over two decades. This year the choir will offer a very interesting pair of works. One is the familiar Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten, a standard in the choral repertoire and a perennial favourite, particularly fitting as a celebration of Britten's 90 th birthday this past month. Britten created this work by weaving medieval texts and carol melodies into a narrative. Originally composed for children's voices, it gains in richness and power with the addition of the bass and tenor voices. The second major work Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest was actually written to be performed with the Ceremony of Carols. Conrad Susa, a graduate of Juilliard, who has written scores for theatre, television and films, and has composed operas and a number of works for chorus, was challenged to write this work as an addition to a performance of the Ceremony. He says, "After several years of writhing in doubt, a friend, Gary Holt, showed me a collection of Spanish carols he had sung as a boy in Arizona. Excited, I juggled them around to form a narrative. I noted their many connections with Renaissance music along with their homey, artful simplicity. Finally, the overriding image of a Southwestern pinata party for the new baby led me to add guitar and marimba to Britten’s harp and to compose connective music and totally re-conceive the carols." The Bel Canto Singers will be joined by Mark Adam on marimba and Steven Peacock on guitar for this work. The group will be accompanied by Catherine Macdonald. Tickets are available at Westminster Books, Mazzuca's, through members of the choir and at the door. Adults $10, Students/Seniors $8, Family $25. For further information please contact Timothy Cooper ([email protected] or 453-4082 ) or Anne Hunt ([email protected] or 363-3891). 4. A Winter Solstice: A Celtic Christmas Celebration Fredericton's best Celtic musicians have joined forces to produce a Christmas show called "A Winter Solstice". This show will take place December 6th and 7th, 2003 at 7:30 pm at Le Centre Communautaire Sainte-Anne, Fredericton, NB. The show, featuring Celtic music from Ireland, Scotland, and Cape Breton, played to a sold out audience in December 2002 and received rave reviews from the local media. The Daily Gleaner stated in their review "that a new Christmas tradition has started in Fredericton." The "new tradition" continues in 2003 with a bigger and more elaborate production. With pipes, accordion, fiddle, harp, whistles, dancers, storytellers and singers the show creates a rich blend of the old and the new. Directed by Krista Touesnard and produced by Carolyn Holyoke, Helen Mórag McKinnon and Krista Touesnard, the shows takes you on a journey across time, beginning with immigrants landing and dancing off a boat after arriving in the new world to the final scene of a "gathering hall" where people are warming up with a rip roaring session set. This performance is sure to warm you up as we approach the Christmas season and leave you wanting for more. Tickets are on sale at Mazzuca's for $12.00. Rush Seating. 6.
