This technology is still being used today in F2, GP3, Formula 3 and many other GT Series. KONI is now introducing this F1 technology in the KONI | H&R TRACK DAY KIT: perfect for track days as well as for fast road use. When deciding which strut design to be used for the TrackDay kit suspension, KONI has chosen the up-side-down configuration of a mono tube damper. This configuration allows a very high side load, combined with a very solid damper setup; a must when it comes to real race dampers. The KONI mono tube dampers offer eight adjustment positions in both rebound as well as bump, which are all easily adjustable and felt by distinct stops, or clicks, to assure that each port in the valve preloaded port system can only be either open or closed. Each of these positions will give a noticeable and repeatable damper curve change. The wide adjustment range gives you the option to tune your car to the maximum setup for both road as well as track day use in a matter of seconds! 12 HEAVY TRACK & RAID ROBUST CONSTRUCTION IMPROVED ROAD HOLDING • KONI Special Technology, Up-Sized for Light Trucks and SUVs • RAID: Extreme Durability Proven in The World’s Toughest Conditions • Heavy Track: Improved Handing and Ride for Big Vehicles • Mono-Tube or Twin-Tube Design Based on Application • Made in KONI factories with KONI Quality standards KONI RAID and Heavy Track are specially developed for the on-road and off-road challenges of Light Trucks, 4x4s, and SUVs. Tested and used under the world’s most extreme conditions, these KONI dampers satisfy the highest demands regarding safety, stability and road holding grip. For many years, KONI RAID shocks have been the damper of choice for many Dakar Rally racers and support vehicles in Africa and South America where performance, strength and safety are paramount. KONI RAID shocks served their duty on BBC TV’s Top Gear North Pole Special and driving up an Icelandic volcano. African Jungle or Urban Jungle, KONI RAID and Heavy Track are ready for the challenge. 13 ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES SERIES 26, 30* Figure 1 1. Move the dust cover and the plastic or metal cover on the end of the damper body to expose the adjusting button (Figure 1). 2. Hold the damper body securely in one hand near where the piston rod emerges from the body or use a vise/clamp carefully only at the lower attachment only. With the damper fully extended, press and hold the adjuster button with one finger while turning the piston rod with your other hand (Figure 2). 3. The adjusting device has been provided with a number if clearly distinguishable stops (clicks), each of which marks an adjustment position for 26 series (zero + 2 clicks = 3 positions) and 30 series (zero + 3 clicks = 4 positions) (Figure 3). 4. Prior to making a new adjustment, confirm if the damper is in the zero position or has been adjusted previously by turning the piston rod to the left (counter Figure 2 clockwise) until the zero-stop is felt. DO NOT USE FORCE or adjuster damage may occur. 5. To increase rebound, turn the piston rod one or more clicks to the right (clockwise), and release the adjusting button. 6. Be sure the adjusting button fully springs back into position. As long as the button is depressed, do not turn the piston rod further; otherwise correct adjustment will be disturbed. As soon as the button has made its complete return, the piston rod may be turned freely. The damper can now be refitted. RYOICHI NAKAGAWA, retired executive managing director, Nissan Motor Company, Ltd., died in Tokyo, Japan, on July 30, 1998. Dr. Nakagawa was born in Tokyo on April 27, 1913, and received his B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering and his Ph.D. in engineering from the prestigious University of Tokyo. Not only was Dr. Nakagawa one of the nicest and kindliest people I have ever met, but he was also one of the most aristocratic. My wife and I fondly remember Dr. Nakagawa coming to our home in Birmingham, Michigan, and spending a lot of time with our children teaching them origami and Japanese children’s games. This no doubt had an influence on our daughter, Bronwyn, who majored in Japanese at the University of Michigan. Although I originally met Dr. Nakagawa through our mutual interests in automobile design, we both came from the aerospace and defense industries. It was through these earlier defense-related experiences that we calmly discussed the implications of the United States dropping the two atom bombs on Japan. Our discussions were both interesting and objective and, most important, each of us understood the other’s position. Dr. Nakagawa devoted his sixty-year career to engineering in a wide array of disciplines. He started his career as an aircraft engine designer in 1936 at Nakajima Aircraft Company and stayed at this company until the end of World War II.
