Levi Leipheimer Feature 1-09
Riding for a Three-peat Two-time Amgen Tour of California champion Levi Leipheimer wants a third victory By Rick Scott For the second consecutive year, Levi Leipheimer will start the Amgen Tour of California as defending champion. The California resident who calls Santa Rosa home enters the 2009 season with two specific goals: the Amgen Tour of California and July’s Tour de France. “I’ll start (the season) with the Amgen Tour of California and then the Tour de France. Everything in between, like spring races such as Paris-Nice, I’ll take them as they come. But I’m definitely showing up to win California,” said the 35-year-old who is a member of the star- studded Team Astana roster, a ProTour squad sponsored by the government of Kazakhstan. Ever since Leipheimer won his first Amgen Tour of California title, he has been the most successful American male professional road cyclist over the past two seasons. In addition to winning in California in 2007, he won a time trial stage and finished 3rd overall at the Tour de France and won the USPRO Road Race Championship. He started off the year last February by defending his Amgen Tour of California crown, scored a bronze medal in the time trial at the Beijing Olympic Games, and won two stages en route to a 2nd place general classification finish at the Vuelta a Espana, Spain’s Grand Tour. Leipheimer is clearly a different athlete since his 2007 breakthrough season that began in the Golden State. What changed? His mental game. -
Le Tour De France
1 Local Culture Report: Le Tour de France Guillaume Lemaˆıtre Heriot-Watt University, Universitat de Girona, Universite´ de Bourgogne [email protected] I. INTRODUCTION The Tour de France is ”Grand Tour” equivalent of the Vuelta Espana or the Giro di Italia. However, the Tour de France is the most popular race in the world without hesitation. In the mind of racers, it is more important to win a Tour de France than a world championship. Win Tour de France shows polyvalent qualities of the winner. II. HISTORY A. Creation of the Tour de France The foundations of the Tour de France takes place on a national French scandal. At the end of the year 1984, Alfred Dreyfus who was captain in the French army at this time and by the way was Jew, was convicted to have given secret information to Germans. After several years and several justice judgements, it was proved that Alfred Dreyfus was not the author of the supposed high teason. However, France was separated in two parts: the dreyfusards and the antidreyfusards. The second important fact was that at this time, it was existing only one sport newspaper named ”Le Velo”. Pierre Giffard, the editor-in-chief, was politically committed and was writing in his sheet to denfend Dreyfus. However, his newspaper was financed through the advertisement by car industrials who were antidreyfusard. The Comte de Dion, who was the representative of car industrials, chose Henry Desgrange in order to create a rival newspaper named ”L’Auto-Velo”. A feature of this sheet is that it was published on a yellow paper which will be the colour of the leader jersey of the Tour de France. -

Victimizer Or Victim? Travis Tygart Talks
The following article is reprinted from its original publication in the Journal, Spring 2014, Issue 74 VICTIMIZER OR VICTIM? TRAVIS TYGART TALKS At the recent 2013 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Travis Tygart, the Chief Executive Officer of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), spoke about his battle to expose cyclist Lance Armstrong as a serial doper and sporting fraud. In June 2012, USADA notified seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong that it was formally charging him with violations of the USADA code involving the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). The allegation was that Armstrong and his cycling team had been involved in systematic use of banned PEDs. The formal charges included allegations of PED possession and trafficking, and aiding and abetting in a cover-up of drug violations. The charges were the result of a several- year-long investigation into allegations about Armstrong and his team, prompted by revelations made to USADA by Floyd Landis, a former Armstrong teammate and disgraced Tour champion who had been stripped of his yellow jersey for using banned substances to win the 2006 Tour. Based on those allegations, USADA went to work, interviewing witnesses and sifting through evidence. Meanwhile, Armstrong, wealthy and well-connected, led a media-based, political and legal assault against cyclists and others who dared to speak to the investigators, against the investigation and against Tygart. Under USADA rules, Armstrong was entitled to a fair hearing, and the matter was headed to such a hearing when, at the eleventh hour, Armstrong announced he would not contest the charges.
