City of Joburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba offi cially launched the R674-million public transport loop in Sandton on 5 September. The transport loop is a dedicated public transport lane in the Sandton CBD and is aimed at increasing the safe and convenient mobility of different modes of public transport for shorter travel times. Mashaba said operations on the loop commenced on 18 September and said he welcomed public feedback. “This upgrade is intended to ease traffi c congestion and improve access to transport systems. “For the past two years, the City has improved Sandton’s sidewalks, introduced cycle lanes and built two new bridges over the M1 to improve connectivity between Alexandra and Sandton.” Key pedestrian routes have been upgraded to make sidewalks more walkable, universally accessible and environmentally friendly. They are easy to navigate for people in wheelchairs, those who are blind, pulling luggage or pushing prams. Cyclists will also be able to navigate the streets easier with 1.3km of dedicated cycling lanes built between Sandton and Alexandra, and the aim is to encourage more people to cycle. The dedicated transport loop which runs along Rivonia Road, Friedman and 5th Avenue, will make daily commuting easier for people using Putco, Gauteng coaches, Metrobus and minibus taxis. The fi nal improvement for Sandton commuters will be the implementation of the Rea Vaya BRT that is set to travel between Sandton Central, Alexandra and the inner city on a trunk route from October next year.

A plethora of cute and talented felines will take over the Jabula Recreation Centre in Sandringham for the Independent All Breeds Championship Cat Show on 24 September. Hosted by the World Cat Federation, the local community is invited to attend and socialise with the breeders and exhibitors at the show. The spokesperson for the event Charmaine Danziger said, “We have approximately 120 all breeds cats entered in this show made up of many of the different breeds including Persians, Exotic, Norwegian Forest, Birmans, Ragdolls, Siamese, Sphynx, Bengal and many others.” There will be 15 judges present on the day, each allocated to a number of different breeds of cats, which they will then judge based on the standard of points for each of the breeds. Danziger added that every judge will choose their top three cats in their ring as Judges Best with prizes sponsored by Royal Canin. The show will be open to the public from 9am until 4pm. Entrance is R10 per adult, R5 for pensioners and children under 12 may enter for free. Details: Charmaine Danziger 082 412 8410.
