People & Events: The Anarchists and the Haymarket Square Incident (May 4, 1886) Albert Parsons was the leader of the American branch of the International Working People's Association (I.W.P.A.), an anarchist group whose stated goal was to engineer a social revolution that would empower the working class. Parsons himself was a paradox: a Confederate soldier who became a Radical Republican after the Civil War and married a former slave. August Spies was the editor of the English-language anarchist newspaper, The Alarm. Together, Parsons and Spies addressed the working class German community of Chicago, calling for demonstrations and organizing parades. The I.W.P.A. had, at most, only five thousand members, but its tactics were so confrontational that it had an undue influence. Demonstrators would snake by the clubs and homes of the elite, or around the Chicago Board of Trade, shouting slogans and waving fists. -

Volume 2 focuses on the Haymarket Martyrs. Many people are not aware that May Day, International Workers’ Day, or May 1, commemorates the 1886 Haymarket affair. The event involved eight anarchists in Chicago who were wrongly convicted of throwing a bomb at police during a labour demonstration in support of workers striking for the eight-hour day. -

However, there has never been a movement that the police and Chicago elite desired to squash Tquickly quite like the anarchist uprising during the 1880s. In the period of time after the Chicago Fire, the population of the city tripled, exceeding one million people (Smith 101). While business was booming for men like George Pullman, the railcar tycoon, and Louis Sullivan, the architect, the Fire left over 100,000 people homeless, mostly German and Scandinavian immigrant laborers who were also subjected to low wages and poor working conditions. In winter of 1872, the Bread Riot began due to thousands marching on the Chicago Relief and Aid Society for access to money donated by people of the United States and other countries after the Fire. Instead of being acknowledged, police filed them into a tunnel under the Chicago River and beat them with clubs (Adelman 4-5). -
Voltairine De Cleyre: More of an Anarchist Than a Feminist?

SHONE* IN RECENT YEARS, there has been significant interest in the writings of Voltairine de Cleyre (1866–1912), with a number of authors attempting to reassess her work, in some cases drawing increased attention to the perspective that her ideas constitute a form of feminism. Remembered also as a poet, anarchist, and atheist, de Cleyre was born in Leslie, Michigan, a small town south of Lansing. Her parents, who were impoverished tailors, left Leslie when Voltairine was about one year old, following the accidental drowning death of another daughter, Marion, at the age of five. The family moved to St. Johns, Michigan, a town on the north side of Lansing (Avrich 1978, 19–20; Havel [1914] 2005, 7). Despite the objections of Voltairine’s mother, her father, an atheist and admirer of Voltaire, created her distinctive given name to commemorate his own beliefs (Avrich 1978, 19; Havel [1914] 2005, 7; Palczewski 1955, 54; Sartwell 2005, 4). Schooled at the Convent of Our Lady of Lake Huron, in Sarnia, Ontario, de Cleyre rebelled against the physical and intellectual rigidity of her training and rejected religion, although some commentators feel that she retained a somewhat clerical demeanor, which DeLamotte (2004, 35) refers to as “an emotional kinship to the religious sensibility.” Her ally in anarchism, *Steve J. O Parsons, August Spies, Adolph Fischer, George Engel and Louis Lingg, leaders of the great eight-hour day national strike of 1886, were executed in Chicago on the framed-up charge of having organized the Haymarket bomb explosion that caused the death of a number of policemen. These early martyrs to labor's cause were legally lynched because of their loyal and intelligent strug gle for and with the working class. Their murder was encom passed by the same capitalist forces which, in our day, we have seen sacrifice Tom Mooney, Sacco and Vanzetti, the Scottsboro boys, McNamara, and a host of other champions of the oppressed. Parsons and his comrades were revolutionary trade unionists, they were Anarcho-Syndicalists rather than Anarchists. -

Er ertrank am Weihnachtsabend 1979 in der Badewanne infolge eines epileptischen Anfalls; einer Spätfolge des Attentats von 11. April 1968, bei dem er schwere Hirnverletzungen davongetragen hatte. Wolf Biermann sang in seinem Trauerlied am 3. I demand freedom for both sexes, freedom of action, freedom in love and freedom in motherhood. —Emma Goldman, “Marriage,” 1897 he Sex Question,” also known as “The Woman Question,” “Timplies a sense of epistemic uncertainty about the nature of womanhood, or the “proper” place of women in society. Introduced in Europe and debated throughout late nineteenth- and early twentieth- century America, the question was part of an international dialogue in response to the social unrest that was evident among a growing num- ber of women who began to challenge the notion that their sphere of influence was “naturally” limited to the roles of sweetheart, wife, and mother. Far from being singular in focus, the sex question pointed to an array of questions about whether (or to what extent) the bodies women occupy should delineate their rights and participation in public life, including questions about voting rights, access to higher education and professional employment, and the freedom to make choices about interpersonal relationships, marriage, and childbirth independently of the influence of men. A fiery speaker, bold social critic, and tireless organizer, Parsons was a prominent figure in radical American po- litical movements from the late 1870s until her death at the age of 89 on March 7th, 1942. Despite playing an important part in such iconic struggles as the movement for the 8-hour day, the defense of the Haymarket martyrs, and the founding of the IWW, Lucy Parsons has been largely ignored by historians of all stripes. Parsons sole biographer, writing in 1976, explained her invisibility thusly: “Lucy Parsons was black, a woman, and working class — three rea- sons people are often excluded from history.”1 While this helps explain in part Parsons’ absence from mainstream historiography, it is not entirely satisfying. While other working class black women found their way into academic writ- ing and political iconography with the rise of Black Nationalist movements in the 1960s and 70s and the concurrent proliferation of Black Studies programs at American universities, Lucy Parsons was mostly left behind. Unfortunately, when she has been included in academic writing she has usually not been allowed to speak for herself.
