However, with several key players returning and a remarkable recruiting class, the Dukes could have what it takes to make some noise in the A-10 this season. The Dukes are very solid at the middle hitter position. Returning to the lineup after missing last season with a knee injury is Amanda Humphrey. The senior started 31 matches in 2006 and was third on the team with 205 kills and second with 109 blocks. Coming off an impressive freshman season is Kristen Hammergren. The sophomore started all 29 matches last season recording 137 kills. Among returning starters from last season, her 84 total blocks are the most and 78 errors are fewest for the Dukes. Liz Homan, who was an honorable mention all state pick in 2006 and a second team All-Ohio pick in 2007, joins the Dukes this season. The Celina High School graduate was named Western Buckeye League all- section in 2006 and 2007. A talented athlete, she was recruited by several schools to play basketball. Duquesne is youngest but deepest at outside hitter. With half a dozen student-athletes competing for playing time, Coach Opperman has a bevy of talent to choose from. Sophomore Nicole Wright, who was named to the conference all-rookie team in 2007, finished her freshman campaign ninth in the A-10 in digs. Wright made 28

starts last season and led DU with 364 kills and 1,131 attempts while being named A-10 Player of the Week two times. Katie Goss, who played in all 29 matches last season, finished her freshman year third for Duquesne with 21 aces. Junior Melanie McKain looks to add experience to the team. She played in eight matches last season. A pair of freshman round out the outside hitter position in Tricia Mullen and Brittany Poling. Mullen ended her career at Botkins Local School owning the record for most career kills, aces, digs and blocks. In addition to being a four-year letter winner, Mullen was named an All-Ohio Division IV honorable mention, All-Shelby County, first-team All-Southwest District, third-team All-Ohio, and a District 9 All-Star.
