Ziyarat Ashura Word by Word زيارة عاشوراء Ziyarat Ashura word by word v7.2 2/24/2013 Introduction to the word by word translation This word by word translation has been designed to encourage reading and connecting with this ziyarat in the original Arabic text. This format provides the reader with a quick reference for the basic meaning of the Arabic words. As with the Quran and the words of the Ahlul Bayt (as), many words will have deeper meanings, so the translations provided below should not be taken as absolute, but only as a first level understanding. The recommended way of reading the ziyarat in this format is to read it in Arabic, and only look down at the meaning if one does not know the meaning of a particular word. The goal is to eventually read the ziyarat in Arabic, without needing the translation at all. We pray that this effort helps readers connect with the words of the Imams at a deeper level such that it moves the heart and makes the reader a more devoted and sincere follower of the Ahlul Bayt (as), and we pray that this effort is accepted by Allah and the Holy Masumeen. النَّاصب َيُ ُ لَ كمُ ُ ا ْْلربُ warَْ (against) you the ones who incited andَ yourْ enemies fromْ َ Ya Ali وُ ُ ب الْب راء ةُ ُ منُ ُ أَ ْشيا ع همُ ُ وُ ُ أَتْ با ع همُ theirْ followersَ andَ theirْ     MIRACLES OF ZIYARAT ASHURA BISMILLAHIR RAHMANIR RAHIM Ziyarat Ashura was sent by Almighty Allah to the Holy Prophet (s.a.) through angel Jibrail to console him on the unique tragedy of Karbala. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.) said: “The difficulties I had to face were unlike anything faced by the earlier prophets (a.s.).” Regarding this tradition, Ayatullah Shaykh Iraqi writes that, here the Prophet (s.a.) apart from his other afflictions, wishes to tell us about a tribulation in particular that was unique in nature, in the sense that none of the previous prophet were subjected to it. And that tribulation was the hostile treatment meted out to the Ahl ul Bayt (a.s.) after the demise of Prophet (s.a.). Among the hardships that the Ahl ul Bayt (a.s.) were made to face, was Karbala. Allah had informed the Prophet (s.a.) about the incident of Karbala through Jibrail. The Prophet (s.a.) was always very grievous and sorrowful about the incidents that were to follow him. So Allah (as to console him) taught the prophet (s.a.) Ziyarat Ashura and enumerated its benefits in the world and the hereafter. And Allah took it up on Himself to grant all the requests and ease all hardships through its recitation. 1 Allah gave this Ziyarat to Jibrail and asked him to present it to the Prophet (s.a.), so as to gladden the Ahl ul Bayt (a.s.) and their Shias, the reciters of this Ziyarat would be contented and pleased with its benefits in the hereafter and gain relief from the adversities of this world.

Its main references are two fundamental works of authority: 1. Misbah al-Mutahajjid by Shaykh al-Tusi 2. Kamil al-Ziyarat by Ibn Qulawayh All the traditions that narrate this ziyara are proven by scholars of hadith to be sound and veracious. In order to establish their authenticity, they have discussed all the chains of narration at length and proven the reliability of every narrator. Those interested in understanding the intricacies of the traditions may refer to works written in this regard.1 The contemporary venerated jurisconsult, Ayatullah Sayyid al-Shubayri al-Zanjani (may Allah protect his noble spirit) was asked about the authenticity of Ziyarat ‘Ashura` and he responded saying: ﺑﻐﺾ اﻟﻨﻈﺮ ﻋﻦ اﻟﺘﺄﻳﻴﺪات اﻟﻐﻴﺒﻴﺔ اﻟﻮاردة ﺑﻄﺮق ﻣﻌﺘﺒﺮة ﺣﻮل زﻳﺎرة ﻋﺎﺷﻮراء واﻟﺘ ﺑﺮأﺳﻬﺎ دﻟﻴﻞ ﻋﻠ اﻋﺘﺒﺎر ﻫﺬه اﻟﺰﻳﺎرة اﻟﺸﺮﻳﻔﺔ، ﻓﺈنﱠ اﻟﺴﻨﺪ اﻟﻤﺬﻛﻮر ﻓ ﻣﺼﺒﺎح اﻟﻤﺘﻬﺠﺪ ﻓ ذﻳﻞ ﻫﺬه اﻟﺰﻳﺎرة ﺳﻨﺪ ﺻﺤﻴﺢ. Disregarding what has been narrated from reliable sources about its endorsement from the unseen realm (al-ta’yidat al-ghaybiyya), which in itself suffices as a proof of the authenticity of this sacred Ziyarat, the chain of narration mentioned in Misbah al-Mutahajjid after this Ziyarat is veracious.2 Other Ways of Establishing Authenticity Apart from the aforesaid, the authenticity of this radiant Ziyarat can be established through other methods considered in the science of hadith.

I will quote each section of the text from the treatise of the great scholar and then I will provide comments in accordance to the methodology of Sayed al-Khoei. The recommendation to visit the grave of the Lord of the Martyrs, Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) (d. 61 A.H. / 680 A.D.) on the tenth day of the month of Muharram, is one on which the scholars of the Imamiyya sect have collectively agreed on throughout the centuries. This consensus is the best proof of its authenticity and its origins from the Imams of the House of the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon them all. Comments: 1 If the consensus of the Imamiyya sect is used with the intention to establish a ziyara on the day of Ashura, then we have no problem with that.

    Chapter 1 Note From the Translator May the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you. This work, a brief ex- pose on Ziyarat ‘Ashura was originally translated as a work which would be sent via email in a series of ‘weekly thoughts’. It is for this reason, that we decided to keep each section short and concise – 400 words at maximum. Obviously, much more can and has been said and written about this visitation, which some scholars deem as being hadith al-Qudsi or a sacred tradition taught directly by Allah (swt) to the fol- lowers of His path. Since we wished for this work to be released during the sacred month of Muharram 1426 ah/2005 c.e, it was decided to publish this work in electronic format in its summarized version. Insha-Allah, with the power and permission of Allah (swt), we intend to revisit this translation, refer back to the original source and present a complete look at the explanation of this beautiful and moving greet- ing. This work is, Insha-Allah, expected to be ready by the ‘Arbain (40th) of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (as) and his family and friends.
