Noble In Luke’s account of the resurrection, it is women, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women who take the message of the empty tomb to the apostles (24:10).1 The Old and New Testaments provide other witnesses to women’s involvement in a variety of ministries; the roles for women in the church through time have been equally as varied. Regardless of the official position of the church regarding their roles, women have remained integral to continuation of our faith. Historical restrictions on the involvement of women have been justified both scripturally and theologically; arguments supporting their involvement find the same bases. Even women who stand out in history often did not challenge the practices of their times that confined women to home, family, or the convent. For example, Hildegard of Bingen is considered a model of piety and while she demonstrated courage in her refusal to bend to the demands of clergy, she was not an advocate of change or of elevation of women’s authority in the church. Patristic attitudes have deep roots in the Judeo-Christian traditions and continue to affect contemporary avenues of ministry available to women. Barriers for women in America began falling in the nineteenth century as women moved to increasingly visible activities outside the home. However, women’s ascent into leadership roles in the church that matched the roles of men was much slower than in secular areas. -
The Presentation of the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence
The presentation of the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence Pastor or leader: Members of the household of God, we gather today to honor a woman who has given faithful service to the church and has lead others into a deeper understanding of the faith and service to Jesus Christ. The award we present this morning is called the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence, named for the mother of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of the Methodist movement. Susanna married 26-year-old Samuel Wesley at age 19 and the couple had 19 children, nine of whom died in infancy. Susanna’s rectory home was burned down twice and Samuel once left her and the children for over a year because of a minor dispute. On two occasions, Samuel spent time in jail due to his inability to pay his bills. The lack of money was a continual struggle for Susanna. Yet, Susanna made certain her children were well educated and trained in the classics and the faith. At one point, while her husband was in London, some 250 people attended her afternoon Sunday school class. Susanna was a remarkable woman. The woman we honor this morning possesses many of the same characteristics of Susanna Wesley. She has a distinctive intellect, a nurturing sprit, unwavering devotion and perseverance in the faith. She has served Jesus Christ and the United Methodist Church in a manner similar to the mother of Methodism. <Name>, would you please come forward. <Name> on behalf of your friends and family and the entire congregation, I present you the Susanna Wesley Award of Excellence. -

···------- Methodist History, 30:3 (April 1992) JOHN BENNET: "SERVANT OF JESUS CHRIST IN THE WORKE OF THE GOSPEL" S. R. VALENTINE Many scholars, particularly those within Methodism, have either ig nored John Bennet or dismissed him as being "an incorrigible Dissenter." 1 Mainly because of his involvement with Grace Murray, a woman appar ently already engaged to John Wesley himself, those with a denomina tional axe to grind have branded Bennet as "a treacherous, unfriendly man."2 Others, sometimes in a highly romanticized fashion, have presented Bennet as a cowardly figure, suffering from a "sensitive nervous tempera ment," in contrast to John Wesley, "in all his virile frame." 3 After almost two hundred fifty years of neglect by ecclesiastical scholarship, Bennet is still regarded by some as "the first authentic Methodist agitator. " 4 However, if we peer through the considerable mist of prejudice which has gathered around the name of Bennet since his death in 1759, it becomes clear that this traditional image hardly does credit to the historical details of Bennet's life. As certain writers have stated, not only was he "one of Wesley's most responsible helpers in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Derby shire," 5 but :Bennet has also been described as "the most outstanding of Wesley's young preachers." 6 His usefulness as an itinerant evangelist is further evidenced in a remark made by Charles Wesley when he stated concerning Bennet: "there is not one of all our labourers whom I esteem and love or with whom I am more united." 7 Such a weight of both con temporary and recent testimony supports the designation of Bennet as "the apostle of the Northwest. -

CAMPBELL The {(Wqy if Salvation" and the Methodist Ethos Bryond John Weslry: A Stucfy in Formal Consensus and Popular Receptzon Abstract It has been well documented that the "way of salvation" was central to John Wesley's thought. But how did Methodists in the nineteenth century express a theology and spirituality of the way of salvation? This article examines formal doctrinal materials from Methodist churches (including catechisms, doctrinal statements, and hymnals) and the testimonies of l'vfethodist men and women to discern how teachings about the way of salvation were transmitted after the time of John and Charles Wesley. Based on these doctrinal works and personal testimonies, the article shows a consistent pattern in Methodist teaching and experience involving a) conviction of sin, b) conversion, c) struggles of the soul following conversion, and then d) entire sanctification. Introduction and Background We find ourselves now at a critical juncture in the fields of Wesleyan and Methodist studies. In the words of John Wesley (1703-1791) “A Methodist is…one who loves the Lord his God with all his heart, with all his soul, with all his mind, and with all his strength.” A United Methodist is a person who loves God “methodically” or “systematically.” METHODIST This is not a name we gave ourselves. John Wesley and others were a part of the Holy Club at Oxford University. They were so organized, so methodical, so disciplined about Bible study, worship, prayer, and helping the poor that others made fun of them: “You’re nothing but a bunch of method-ists!” However, rather than be angry, Wesley and the others simply claimed the name Methodist. What is THE United Methodist Church? [History] Methodism began as a movement within the Church of England. The Methodist movement was born in England in the 1700s. John Wesley who is the founding father was an ordained Anglican priest. At a prayer meeting in London on May 24, 1738 at Aldersgate, John Wesley’s heart was “strangely warmed”; he felt for the first time that God truly loved him and had forgiven him that led him to become the first teacher of “Methodism.” He encouraged people to discern how they should live out our faith in Christ by looking at four important aspects in developing thoughts on God which is called “Wesleyan Quadrilateral”: Scripture, Tradition, Experience, and Reason. WESLEYAN QUADRILATERAL When discerning (deciding something thoughtfully, carefully, and prayerfully), use these four things to inform your decision and to find confidence that you are walking in the way: Scripture, Tradition, Experience, and Reason.
