Rite of Ordination of Several Deacons RITE OF ORDINATION OF EVERAL EACONS S D THE MOST REVEREND DAVID J. MALLOY BISHOP OF ROCKFORD CATHEDRAL OF SAINT PETER SEPTEMBER 26, 2020 eacons must be blameless, not greedy, Dthey must not be false-hearted. They must hold to the faith with a clear conscience. Let them be tested first, and if they prove themselves blameless, let them then serve as deacons. cf. 1 Timothy 3:8-13 With praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God Jose Aguilar Michael Alber Neal Carpenter Victor Carrera Solis Robert Collins Stewart Dobson Mark Ennis Gregory Farrell William Kearley Kenneth Mullins Christopher Nocchi Timothy Pignatari James Schilling David Womac are called to the Sacred Order of Deacon through the power of the Holy Spirit and the imposition of hands by THE MOST REVEREND DAVID J. MALLOY BISHOP OF ROCKFORD PROCESSIONAL HYMN STAND The Mass begins with the entrance procession, reminiscent of Christ’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. As the Bishop and sacred ministers make their way to the altar through the congregation, we recall that God has not abandoned His people, but comes among us even now through His priest. Meanwhile, we stand and sing the opening hymn to show our unity and common desire to give joyful praise to God as a community of believers united in prayer. LORD WHOSE LOVE IN HUMBLE SERVICE BAYLY 1 SIGN OF THE CROSS AND GREETING The Bishop begins the Mass in the Name of the Most Holy Trinity (cf. Matthew 28:19) and greets us, the faithful, with the traditional greeting of Saint Paul, the Apostle (cf. 2 Corinthians 13:14). Bishop: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ℟ Amen. Bishop: Peace be with you. ℟ And with your spirit. PENITENTIAL ACT We recall our sins and ask God’s gratuitous and liberating forgiveness so that we might more worthily worship Him throughout this Mass. Bishop: Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking their breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Bishop: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. ℟ Amen. 2 KYRIE The ancient Greek words mean: “Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy” (cf. Matthew 20:31). This prayer prepares us to worship God with hearts that are pure. GRADUALE ROMANUM GLORIA This ancient hymn from the fourth century jubilantly praises the Triune God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the context of the history of our salvation. We sing with hearts full of joy as we call to mind what God has done for us. We join in praising God in chorus with the angels (cf. Luke 2:14). KEIL—MASS OF ST. FRANCES CABRINI 3 COLLECT Called the Collect because in this prayer, the celebrant collects all the prayers, intentions, desires, needs, joys, and sorrows of the whole People of God. He offers them to God in a manner that is distinctively Roman, namely, the prayer is simple, sober, and brief. Bishop: Let us pray. O God, who have taught the ministers of your Church to seek not to be served but to serve their brothers and sisters, grant, we pray, that these your servants, whom you graciously choose today for the office of Deacon, may be effective in action, gentle in ministry, and constant in prayer. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. ℟ Amen. 4 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD SIT After the collect, we sit to meditate on a series of Biblical readings. Although the words we hear have been fixed through writing, we remember that they are the inspired Word of God. They are truly alive (cf. Hebrews 4:12) and through them God intends to speak something new to us in this moment. The Word of God is not a book or a doctrine. It is a Person, Jesus Christ. (cf. Deus Caritas Est, 1) FIRST READING NUMBERS 3:5-9 Lector: A reading from the Book of Numbers. The LORD said to Moses: “Summon the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest, as his assistants. They shall discharge his obligations and those of the whole community before the meeting tent by serving at the Dwelling. They shall have custody of all the furnishings of the meeting tent and discharge the duties of the Israelites in the service of the Dwelling. You shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they have been set aside from among the Israelities as dedicated to me. The Word of the Lord. ℟ Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM PSALM cf. 84 (83):5A ADAM BARTLETT ℟ How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts. My soul is longing and yearning for the courts of the LORD. My heart and my flesh cry out to the living God. ℟ Blessed are they who dwell in your house, forever singing your praise. Blessed the people whose strength is in you. whose heart is set on pilgrim ways. ℟ 5 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear O God of Jacob. Turn your eyes, O God, our shield; look on the face of your anointed. ℟ SECOND READING ACTS 6:1-7 Lector: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly. The Word of the Lord. ℟ Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA STAND Alleluia is the Greek version of the Hebrew word Hallelujah which means, “Praise the Lord” or “Praise YHWH!” We stand and greet the Lord Jesus as He comes to us in the words of His Holy Gospel as He was greeted on His glorious entry into Jerusalem. KEIL—MASS OF ST. FRANCES CABRINI ℟ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. ℟ 6 THE GOSPEL MATTHEW 20:25-28 Deacon: El Señor esté con ustedes. The Lord be with you. ℟ Y con tu espíritu. ℟ And with your spirit. Del Santo Evangelio según A reading from the holy Gospel san Mateo according to Matthew ℟ Gloria a Ti, Señor. ℟ Glory to you, O Lord. En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus But Jesus summoned them and said, “You discípulos: “Ya saben que los jefes know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over de los pueblos los tiranizan y que los them, and the great ones make their authority grandes los oprimen. Palabra del Señor The Gospel of the Lord. ℟ Gloria a Ti, Señor Jesús. ℟ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. 7 RITE OF ORDINATION OF SEVERAL DEACONS ELECTION OF THE CANDIDATES SIT The candidates are called by a Deacon: Deacon: Let those to be ordained Deacons come forward. Then their names are called individually by the Deacon. Candidates: Present. Each candidate goes to the Bishop, to whom he makes a sign of reverence. When the candidates are in their places before the Bishop, the Priest designated by the Bishop says: Priest: Most Reverend Father, holy Mother Church asks you to ordain these men, our brothers, to the responsibility of the Diaconate. Bishop: Do you know them to be worthy? Priest: After inquiry among the Christian people and upon the recommendation of those responsible, I testify that they have been found worthy. Bishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Diaconate. ℟ Thanks be to God. All may then applaud. HOMILY SIT St. Justin Martyr (103-165 A.D.) recounts that just after the Gospel reading, a priest rises and exhorts the faithful to greater fidelity to the Gospel and to moral excellence (Apol.

  • Worship Bulletin April 18, 2021
April 18, 2021, Worship St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, Cary, IL Prelude Announcements Thanksgiving for Baptism Alleluia! Christ is risen. People of God: Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! Refreshed by the resurrection life we share in Christ, let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. We thank you, risen Christ, for these waters where you make us new, leading us from death to life, from tears to joy. We bless you, risen Christ, that your Spirit comes to us in the grace-filled waters of rebirth, like rains to our thirsting earth, like streams that revive our souls, like cups of cool water shared with strangers. Breathe your peace on your church when we hide in fear. Clothe us with your mercy and forgiveness. Send us companions on our journey as we share your life. Make us one, risen Christ. Cleanse our hearts. Shower us with life. To you be given all praise, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God, now and forever. People of God: Amen. Prayer of the Day Let us pray, God, sometimes the work you call us to feels overwhelming and too much to bear. Help us remember that you send others to share the work. Help us remember that others have the gifts we do not have, the gifts we need. And help us remember that sometimes you need us to serve others when they are overwhelmed. People of God: Amen Reading Acts 6:1-7 Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would come to them and help them spread the Gospel throughout the world.

  • THEY PRAYED.” Rev
“THEY PRAYED.” Rev. Robert T. Woodyard First Christian Reformed Church January 3, 2021, 9 and 10:30 AM Scripture Texts: Acts passages on prayer Introduction. You will recall we have been working our way through the book of Acts off and on over the past couple of years. This morning I am going to preach through the entire book of Acts. Sounds daunting, sounds overwhelming, sounds crazy, sounds really long. I am going to preach through the entire book of Acts this morning, but I am not going to play all the notes, I am going to play only one note, one note that is played over thirty times in the book of Acts, and that note is prayer. As you have come to expect at the beginning of each year I challenge us to take up the habit of praying and reading Scripture, to renew our efforts, God helping us. And to the extent that all of us have fallen short or failed to do this, I urge us to fail forward, to make an intentional effort no matter how faulty. In the book of Acts Dr. Luke describes in some detail the beginning history of the early Christian Church. There is one thing that stands out about the early church and it is prayer. The early church was a praying church. The early church didn’t talk about prayer, they didn’t expect just the leaders to pray, they didn’t hold conferences on prayer, they didn’t just “say their prayers,” they didn’t just open and close their meetings with prayer, the early church prayed.

  • Sorting It out – Making Welfare Fair 112
Sorting it out – Making welfare fair 112 Aim of lesson To learn from the way the early church sorted out problems that arose, and from the care they showed to those in need. Bible background Acts 6:1-7. Outline of lesson You may like to remind the class of the problem of dishonesty which the church faced in last week’s lesson. Today’s lesson looks at another problem. Ask the class to notice what the problem is, and how they solved it, as you read together Acts 6:1-7. How to be fair? By questioning the class draw out the problem of fairness in the distribution of food to the widows in need. Have the class look in detail at the way the disciples behave. After the complaint is made, the twelve gather all the disciples together. The decision is not taken by just a few; the whole church considers the problem. The twelve propose that a team of seven men should be appointed – men whom all the members consider suitable. The apostles then lay their hands on them and pray for them. This strengthens the concept that they are all working together. The deacons, as they are often called, are not a rival group to the apostles; they are part of the same church, doing different aspects of the Lord’s work. Ask the class to consider what lessons they have learned about what to do and what not to do when there is a problem. The students can summarise the discussion in the three ‘tables’ in the workbook.

A Dissertation Submitted to Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF MINISTRY By Waylan Lawrence Payne, Jf. Lynchburg, Virginia May, 1996 LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY THESIS PROJECT APPROVAL SHEET /J- GRADE ABSTRACT THE ROLE OF A NEW TESTAMENT DEACON: AN OFFICE TO HOLD OR A MINISTRY TO PERFORM? Waylan L. Payne, Jr. Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, 1996 Mentor: Dr. Carl 1. Diemer, Jr. The function of deacons in many Southern Baptist churches is inconsistent with biblical principles, creating confusion at the local church level. This phenomenon is substantiated by information gathered from available literature, surveys, and personal interviews with professors, pastors and deacons. The purpose of this paper is to present a biblical and historical basis for the diaconate and to provide successful deacon ministries as positive role models. Two church offices are recognized--pastor/elder/overseer and deacon. Deacons are not elders or overseers. When they attempt to perform as such, administrating church business, they are functionally violating New Testament principle and practice. Abstract length: 99 words. • Apocryphal Stories in Armenian Manuscripts
Chapter 7 Apocryphal Stories in Armenian Manuscripts Nira Stone Those involved in the study of Armenian manuscript illumination frequently encounter an interesting phenomenon—pictures occurring in Gospel manu- scripts which show scenes from apocrypha or which, while showing scenes from the Gospels, also contain apocryphal iconographic elements. Our atten- tion here will be focused on scenes that occur together with the Gospel text and not on scenes which illustrate apocryphal literature. This phenomenon is widespread in Byzantine manuscripts and particularly in Oriental Christian manuscripts. However, among all these, it is most frequent in Armenian manuscripts. I shall not be able to exhaust this topic here, but I would like to present a number of interesting instances of this phenomenon. Moreover, I wish to draw attention to the question why this high percentage of apocryphal scenes oc- curs in Armenian manuscripts, rather than in any others. John and Prochorus The most widespread of all these scenes in Armenian and other manuscripts is that of John the Evangelist and Prochorus. Generally the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are shown in portraits as thinking and writing down their Gospels, most often as a frontispiece for the Gospel which bears their name.1 As a frontispiece of the Gospel of John there frequently occurs a painting of John standing and listening to the Gospel which is issuing from a heavenly source (fig. 7.1). At his feet an additional figure is seated, writing down his words. This figure is Prochorus and the whole scene is based on the apocryphal Acts of John by Prochorus his disciple, a work apparently written in the fifth cen- tury, which has very little in common with the ancient Acts of John (2nd cen- tury).
