(Burchfield) Daily Transactions 1 Most likely Detroit Tiger to be traded? Probably J.D. Martinez October 20, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Detroit Tigers aren’t in a position to spend more money. General manager Al Avila said as much on Tuesday afternoon, saying with certainty the team would not be a big player in the free agent market. Avila wants the team to get younger. He wants more financial flexibility. And this off-season, he will approach the trade market with a number of high-priced, uber-productive chips, none more likely to get moved – if a move is made – than rightfielder J.D. Martinez. Martinez is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2017 season. He is due $11.75 million. “I don’t foresee any talks of a long-term contract at this point,” Avila said. “In saying that, we’re going to keep an open mind in what possibilities come across this winter, this coming summer. I’m not going to rule out that we wouldn’t consider a long-term deal, but sitting here today, we’re not thinking that way right now.

  • Fort Myers Miracle Will Host the 2016 FSL All-Star Game All-Star Weekend in Fort Myers Set for June 17-19
Fort Myers Miracle will host the 2016 FSL All-Star Game All-Star Weekend in Fort Myers set for June 17-19 FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 25, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle are pleased to announce that the 2016 Florida State League All-Star Game will be hosted at the newly renovated Hammond Stadium at the CenturyLink Sports Complex. The 55th All-Star Game in league history will be played for a sixth time in Fort Myers since 1985 and will be put on by the Miracle for a fifth time. A three-day All-Star break will commence on Friday, June 17 and end on Sunday, June 19. The game will be played on Saturday, June 18 at 7:05 p.m. “We are thrilled to show off this state-of-the art facility after the renovations and upgrades that have improved the fan experience the last two seasons,” said Miracle Chief Operating Officer Steve Gliner. “This event will be a great opportunity not just for local fans, but also for guests from around Florida and the United States to come and experience Fort Myers, Hammond Stadium and the beautiful Southwest Florida region.” Hammond Stadium and the CenturyLink Sports Complex underwent a two-phase, $48.5 million dollar renovation that began during the fall of 2013 and was completed prior to Minnesota Twins Spring Training in the spring of 2015. Phase I included a brand new outfield boardwalk to provide 360-degree viewing, four different types of seating options, two full service bars and new concession stands in center field.

  • Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

A’s News Clips, Monday, November 22, 2010 Drumbeat: Iwakuma info from Japan; pursuit almost officially over From Chronicle Staff Writer Susan Slusser 11/22/2010 12:10AM Update: I've received more detailed information from Japan since posting this, so will note that where necessary. I just got a call from Japan at midnight California time, and a source with knowledge of the A's talks with Japanese pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma told me that it is more than likely that Iwakuma's Pacific League team, Rakuten, will announce his return to the Golden Eagles today. Talks with the A's? "Ended," the source said. "I think so. I don't even know why they bid on the posting." New information: I'm told that the posting fee was $18 million, a bit higher than the $16 million that had been estimated in the U.S. That info came from Japan, not from a major-league source. According to the source in Japan, the A's were offering $3.8 million per year, a figure that did not include the posting fee; that's right in line with the $3-5 million per year average the Chronicle reported on Sunday. The A's, the source said, wanted to use Texas pitcher Colby Lewis, who pitched in Japan before returning to become a top-notch starter with the Rangers, as a comparison; Lewis will make $3 million next season. Kei Igawa's five-year, $20 million deal with the Yankees was also mentioned. "They basically said take it or leave it," the Japanese source said of the A's.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.
