Arrival in Sydney - First Review! ARRIVAL IN SYDNEY - FIRST REVIEW! ABBAMAILer Chris Patrick flew from Brisbane to Sydney on Saturday to see ARRIVAL. Here is his review... Something refreshingly gorgeous took place on Saturday night in one of Sydney's outer suburbs. ARRIVAL. They were nothing short of brilliant. Their attention to detail in re-creating the atmosphere of the '77 live shows was breathtaking - and the fact that their costumes were made by ABBA's Owe Sandstrom made it all the more special. The helicopter intro set the mood, blasting into an electrifying rendition of "Tiger" and the next two hours was nothing short of spectacular. Although visually it was very much '77, it was a treat to hear '79 gems like "As Good As New", "Chiquitita", "Does Your Mother Know" and "Summer Night City". And talk about teasers... "Gimme!, Gimme!, Gimme!" dropped down a key at the end - which usually means a segue into "Super Trouper"- but it didn't happen! This show was 70's ABBA all the way. The second half was where ARRIVAL really showed their superiority in the cover band stakes: a brilliant rendition of the mini-musical "The Girl With The Golden Hair" - complete with narrator. Sadly no "Carousel", but no-one minded. Their message was clear - ARRIVAL were playing to us, the ABBA fans. Their love, respect and commitment of ABBA shone throughout. And what an encore "Hole In Your Soul" was. We were all going for it on the dance floor right next to the stage... and had been for most of the second half. Eye contact was the name of the game too - many times the two girls would sing down to us, with us singing and gesturing back - particularly in "Does Your Mother Know". Björn had a chance to shine here, giving us a great guitar solo as well as his only stab at singing. Strangely, he stuck to his guitar playing except for this song, and left the male vocal parts to one of the backing singers - and yes, there were three of them! My favourites for the night? "When I Kissed The Teacher", "That's Me" and "I Wonder (Departure)". "Benny" was so much more authentic than his Bjorn Again counterpart - all the riffs and nuances were there, particularly gorgeous was his piano solo in "I Wonder". And how privileged did we all feel at the end of the show - all four members came out to talk to us, still in costume. We chatted for a good half hour, and they were so happy to be there - the vibe was great. They told us that they're working on including "Just A Notion" in their show - and revealed that they're also doing a new recording of the song. ARRIVAL's concert last night had no gimmicks, no silly nicknames, no slapstick routines. It was pure, unadulterated ABBA. Graeme is right... they are the quintessential act, visually and musically. ARRIVAL's Benny told me after the show: "We work very very hard to pay tribute to ABBA. Their music means so much to us." And it was there for all to see. The creative activity at work here is astounding to say the least. ABBA's future is in good hands. Chris Patrick, Brisbane, Australia .

  • ARRIVAL in SYDNEY - Grant's Review
ARRIVAL IN SYDNEY - Grant's Review ARRIVAL - Simply Sensational Sensational. That’s the only word I can think of to describe the two ARRIVAL shows held in Sydney over the weekend. I am feeling quite lost for words and out of it today. A bit like feeling jet lagged. ARRIVAL are ABBA fans that much is obvious. The attention to detail, the respect, the song choices, the costumes everything is just so right and spot on. And no f##king cat dresses!!!!! As much as I loved the cat dresses way back when ABBA wore them, they have now become the symbol of cheap, tacky ABBA send-ups. ARRIVAL's 1977 tour costumes were just perfect and looked so real. The mini musical? I am lost for words. The narrator, the wigs, the choreography all perfect. Even at the best of times I really can’t get into “Thank You For The Music” but Anna (Agnetha) put in such an amazing vocal performance, I really sat up and took notice a more German cabaret type of vocal. Vicky’s (Frida) emotional rendition of “I Wonder” gave me goose bumps and a weird feeling inside. You often forget what an amazing song “I Wonder” is because the studio version is so flat and devoid of emotion. And “Marionette” really rocked. One of my favourite ABBA songs. :-) Singing in Swedish was a great touch. “Ring Ring (Bara Du Slog En Signal)” never sounded better. “Fernando” took on a new dimension hearing the first verse and chorus sung in Swedish as Frida's original version had been.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Abandoned Library Press 2
Abandoned Library Press 2 VIsion Editors’ Note “I had no sense of being seen or observed by anyone as I wrote. Perhaps this was a problem too.” Bhanu Kapil, Ban En Banlieue (Nightboat Books, 2015) The word ‘vision’ holds many meanings, especially in relation to art and literature. Sight. What is seen or isn’t. The way the eyes move inside the sockets, the way the lids press together, lashes entangle. The way color and light enter through a soft jellied hole, pinpricks leading to an infinity of signals shimmering around our brains. Vision is visibility—in writing, in life, in culture. Being seen in metaphors, in stereotypes, in cold cliches, in terms of how you perform gender your biological sex in terms of your body’s specificities or faults or beautiful differences. The pigmentation of the stuff that holds your insides in. Being seen as threat, being seen as other. Or, it is not being seen at all. Vision is also scope; dilation of time and intentions into particulate or infinitesimal stretches. It could mean hallucinations, transformations, slips of consciousness, dreams, faults in percep- tion, things forgotten, loaded silences, memories, future memories, held breathes, déjà vu. Issue 2 features twelve writers who each deal with the theme of vision in their own unique ways. Through poetry, hybrid essays, erasures and more, our authors show us there is more to vision than meets the eye. Read on.
