The motel consists of thirty guests rooms, an office, a manager's residence, a carport, continuous unsupported balcony, and a second-story glass enclosed cabana or lounge and adjoining sun deck that are accessed via a curved ramp (Photograph #2).     n the eyes of some, it is as tacky as a plastic pink flamingo on a front lawn in a trailer park. To others, it is a fun, if idealized, throwback to a better Itime. However you view it, there is no doubt it is one of the Garden State’s somewhat underappreciated influences on the world of architecture. Known as Doo-Wop, it found a unique expression that came of age along with a generation of New Jerseyans in the motels of Wildwoods. The Wildwoods You wouldn’t know it to look at it today, but New Jersey’s Wildwoods were once, indeed, a tangle of wild woods. They sit on a six mile long barrier island near the southern tip of the state at Exit 4 on the Garden State Parkway. When one says “The Wildwoods,” they refer collectively to three separate municipalities: North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest. They were founded by developers between 1880 and 1905, notably including Frederick Swope and his Five Mile Beach Improvement Company, Philip Pontius Baker and his Wildwood Beach Improvement Company, and John Burk with the Holly Beach Improvement Company. NJ-1186 Location: 5600 Ocean Avenue, Wildwood Crest, Cape May County, New Jersey Present Owner: Gary and Ann Montalbano Present Use: Motel Significance: Well-preserved Wildwood motel with distinctive original 1950s architectural features: "levitating" concrete ramp, lean in/lean out glass walls on second-floor lounge, colorful lighting, c-shaped swimming pool, and a large neon sign which required liberalizing town ordinances. The first owners also claim to have originated fake palm trees in the Wildwoods. PART I. HISTORICAL INFORMATION A. Physical History: 1. Date of erection: The building was constructed in 1958, except for the west wing, which was built in 1959. (The west wing had been in the original plans, but was postponed for financial reasons) . 1 The first portion was designed to contain 21 motel units and one apartment, while the west wing contained 7 motel units. 2. Architect: Although Wildwood's only architect (Gregory Ogden?) approved the construction documents, according to original owners, local builder Lou Morey actually designed the motel. 2 3. Original and subsequent owners: Dominic and Julie Rossi, original owners, sold the property in 1985 to Gary and Ann Montalbano. 4. Builder: The motel was constructed by Lou Morey. For the purposes of this inventory, heritage tourism attractions were defined as historically significant places in New Jersey that either currently offer (or potentially could offer) a meaningful visitor experience to help visitors better understand New Jersey’s history.
