Parallel ATA has maintained its success for many years for three primary reasons: 1) Low Cost, 2) virtually universal operating system support, and 3) the ability to evolve to higher speeds and performance whilst maintaining backwards compatibility with older parallel ATA devices. From its original interface speed of just 3MB/s, parallel ATA has moved up to burst transfer rates of 66MB/s and 100MB/s and beyond. The latest generation of the parallel ATA interface, Ultra ATA-133, goes even further with a burst transfer rate of up to 133MB/s. While parallel ATA has enjoyed an illustrious track record, the specification is now showing its age. Parallel ATA imposes some serious design issues on today’s developers, including a 5 volt signaling requirement, high pin count, major cabling headaches and, perhaps most significantly, limited performance headroom.

    Whitepaper | November 2007 Serial Hard Drive Interface Compatibility Introduction Use of the parallel bus interface, which has long been the industry-standard storage interconnect, is on the verge of decline among the vast majority of system builders. Components that are based on the aging interface are increasingly being replaced by their evolved serial counterparts—Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA). The new serial interfaces are designed to address the bandwidth limitations of their predecessors. They will support faster data transfer rates and more devices per control- ler, as well as reduce the size and complexity of the cables and connectors (thus en- abling smaller, more densely-packed disk arrays). Among the most significant benefits is that incompatibility between SCSI and ATA will finally be addressed. For the first time, system builders will be able to easily integrate SAS and SATA hard drives in a single en- closure. Plug compatibility is one reason for this, but a more substantial explanation lies with the system controllers themselves. The controllers have been designed to recognize both interface types and “talk” to each device in its own language and coordinate their respective activities and performance. As a result systems can now be deployed using a combination of SAS drives (to provide the highest levels of system reliability) and SATA drives (to provide a high performance and low-cost-per-gigabyte solution for near-line storage, disk-to-disk backup and similar applications). This allows for a great deal of flexibility in designing disk arrays and other storage systems that provide exactly what the application requires for the least cost and maximum return on investment.

    Serial Attached SCSI: The Universal Enterprise Storage Connection By Harry Mason, Director, Industry Marketing, LSI Logic and President, SCSI Trade Association Trending Toward Serial The move to serially connected storage devices, primarily disk drives, is irrefutable. While today’s installed base is relatively small and consists of a few million Fibre Channel drives, new interfaces that service a greater percentage of the storage market promises to change all of that. The number of serially connected storage devices deployed over the next four years could be well in excess of 100million drives! VLSI integration and the advances of high-speed serial transceiver technology are rapidly driving the industry toward these versatile connection schemes. The advantages of these serial connections are many: smaller form factors, more flexible and thinner cabling, less weight, more predictable/reliable signaling mechanisms, and topologies that promise to scale with the needs of the end-users. Serial ATA Serial ATA (sATA) is one of these emerging storage connections that promises to change the way the world connects its storage devices. sATA is expected to be a replacement for parallel ATA (pATA) and, as such, will be focused on bringing the best “cost-per-gigabyte” drives to the market. With market volumes in the desktop PC space exceeding 150M units per year, cost will be the driving force behind the manufacturing of these devices. The serial connection scheme used to interconnect these drives within the host is much more flexible and does less to restrict the airflow inside of desktop enclosures.
