Nieminen and Mustonen Evolution: Education and Outreach 2014, 7:11 http://www.evolution-outreach.com/content/7/1/11 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Argumentation and fallacies in creationist writings against evolutionary theory Petteri Nieminen1,2* and Anne-Mari Mustonen1 Abstract Background: The creationist–evolutionist conflict is perhaps the most significant example of a debate about a well-supported scientific theory not readily accepted by the public. Methods: We analyzed creationist texts according to type (young earth creationism, old earth creationism or intelligent design) and context (with or without discussion of “scientific” data). Results: The analysis revealed numerous fallacies including the direct ad hominem—portraying evolutionists as racists, unreliable or gullible—and the indirect ad hominem, where evolutionists are accused of breaking the rules of debate that they themselves have dictated. Poisoning the well fallacy stated that evolutionists would not consider supernatural explanations in any situation due to their pre-existing refusal of theism. Appeals to consequences and guilt by association linked evolutionary theory to atrocities, and slippery slopes to abortion, euthanasia and genocide. False dilemmas, hasty generalizations and straw man fallacies were also common. The prevalence of these fallacies was equal in young earth creationism and intelligent design/old earth creationism. The direct and indirect ad hominem were also prevalent in pro-evolutionary texts. Conclusions: While the fallacious arguments are irrelevant when discussing evolutionary theory from the scientific point of view, they can be effective for the reception of creationist claims, especially if the audience has biases. Thus, the recognition of these fallacies and their dismissal as irrelevant should be accompanied by attempts to avoid counter-fallacies and by the recognition of the context, in which the fallacies are presented. -

PIRSSON INTRODUCTION If it appears strange that over twenty years should have elapsed since the death of the noted geologist, James Dwight Dana, before a biographical memoir of his life and work should be presented to the members of this Academy, this has been due to a variety of circumstances, which need not be dwelt upon here. If we have on the one hand the feeling that this should have been done before, on the other there is the advan- tage that from the time that has passed we are enabled to enlarge our perspective and to see in a clearer light the char- acter of the man and the service which he rendered to Amer- ican science. 1 The Utilitarian Influence on American Legal Science in the Early Republic Steven J. Macias California Western School of Law [email protected] (rev. 9/8) In Utilitarian Jurisprudence in America, Peter King held up Thomas Cooper, David Hoffman, and Richard Hildreth, as those early American legal thinkers most notably influenced by Bentham.1 For King, Hildreth represented “the first real fruition of Benthamism in America,” whereas Cooper’s use of Bentham was subservient to his Southern ideology, and Hoffman’s use was mainly to “reinforce” a utilitarianism otherwise “derived from Paley.”2 Although Hildreth’s work falls outside the timeframe of early-American legal science, Cooper’s and Hoffman’s work falls squarely within it. What follows is, in part, a reevaluation of Cooper and Hoffman within the broader context of early republican jurisprudence. Because Cooper became an advocate of southern secession late in life, too many historians have dismissed his life’s work, which consisted of serious intellectual undertakings in law and philosophy, as well as medicine and chemistry. Hoffman, on the other hand, has become a man for all seasons among legal historians. His seven-year course of legal study contained such a vast and eclectic array of titles, that one can superficially paint Hoffman as advocating just about anything. As of late, Hoffman has been discussed as a leading exponent of Scottish Common Sense philosophy, second only to James Wilson a generation earlier. This tension between Hoffman-the-utilitarian and Hoffman-the-Scot requires a new examination. Abstract: In this article, after reviewing traditional arguments from design, I consider some more recent versions: the so-called ‘new design arguments’ for the existence of God. These arguments enjoy an apparent advantage over the traditional arguments from design by avoiding some of Hume’s famous criticisms. However, in seeking to render religion and science compatible, it seems that they require a modification not only of our scientific understanding but also of the traditional conception of God. Moreover, there is a key problem with arguments from design that Mill raised to which the new arguments seem no less vulnerable than the older versions. The view that science and religion are complementary has at least one significant advantage over other positions, such as the view that they are in an antagonistic relationship or the view that they are so incommensurable that they are neither complementary nor antagonistic. The advantage is that it aspires to provide a unified worldview that is sensitive to the claims of both science and religion. And surely, such a worldview, if available, would seem to be superior to one in which, say, scientific and religious claims were held despite their obvious contradictions. -

1 Chapter One Impossible Economies: Theories of Non-Productivity in Victorian Contexts This dissertation is about a set of key paradoxes in Victorian thought. In general terms, it defines a series of interlocking mental habits at mid-century, and maps the diverse deployments of those habits in contemporary locations of knowledge. My focus resides with several formative scientific studies that I read alongside parallel developments in the realist novel, moral philosophy, and social critique. But my main purpose in doing so is not to re-construct the lines of a distinct disciplinary formation so much as to recover a richer range of cultural confluences and epistemic patterns. More precisely, I discuss the ways in which major Victorian texts understood the shifting boundaries between the individual and the group—and, namely, the breakdown of cooperative bonds. Whereas older norms of natural explanation had emphasized the reciprocal relationship between part and whole, in keeping with the watch-like regularities promulgated by natural theology, these texts turned time after time to the function of the prodigal part--the exception that failed to signify within the larger life of the group. This emphasis held equally true in theories of human bodies, of communities, and of the created cosmos at large. To inquire into the natural order, in this context, was to note the recurrence of those elements which were wasteful or otherwise non- productive within the orderly operations of the whole. The paradoxes that emerged 2 among this state of affairs, and their relation to the formal and perspectival patterns of the novel, form my central concerns in the chapters to follow. -

When Induction Was About Concepts John P. McCaskey Stanford University The philosophy professor says, ―This swan is white. That swan is white. And so is the other,‖ and asks, ―May we legitimately infer that all swans are white?‖ In this way the students are introduced to induction or, as we seem always to call it, the ―problem‖ of induction. Deduction presents no real problem, we say, but induction brings no end of trouble. It is stubborn, recalcitrant, rebellious. We can almost hear Henry Higgins singing, ―Why can‘t a woman be more like a man?‖ or ―Why can‘t induction be more like deduction? / Deduction is so honest, so thoroughly square / eternally noble, historically fair. / Why can‘t induction be more like deduction ?‖ Higgins does not sing that, but Nicholas Rescher, for example, says, ―An inductive inference can always be looked upon as an aspiring but failed deductive inference.‖1 Rescher speaks for virtually all epistemologists of the last hundred years. But this position was not always so common. There were times when induction was not thought to be a problematic sort of inference. In fact, there were times induction was not thought to be primarily about propositional inference at all. Induction was about forming sound concepts and good definitions. This essay recalls those times. Recalling them is important for three reasons. First, doing so will help check our temptation to think our predecessors were too naïve, careless, or stupid to see the obvious. ―How could Francis Bacon have thought his method of induction would lead to certainty?!‖ ―How could William Whewell not have appreciated Hume‘s challenge to induction?!‖ ―How could Aristotle have thought all induction reduces to complete enumeration?!‖ But these men were not stupid. -

George Darwin was the fifth child of Charles Darwin, the first proponent of evolution. He initially trained as a barrister and was finally an astronomer, becoming Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge University and President of the Royal Astronomical Society. In between he was a mathematician and scientist, graduating as Second Wrangler in the Mathematics Tripos in 1868 from Trinity College Cambridge. Francis Galton was George Darwin’s second cousin. He began his studies in medicine, turning after two years to mathematics at Trinity College Cambridge. -
