During question period in the House of Commons, B.C. Reformer Keith Martin compared the Nisga’a deal in northern B.C. to the apartheid policies in South Africa. He was joined by Kootenay East Reform MP Jim Abbott, who noted he could run in an election to become mayor of Vancouver but couldn’t become chief of the Nisga’a because he is ”the wrong race.” Perhaps Abbott hasn‘t noticed, but unless he becomes a Catholic, chances are pretty slim he will ever be allowed to become Pope. And unless he has a sex change, it is highly unlikely he will ever be crowned Miss America. The Nisga’a land claim settlement proposal seems to have spawned a whole bunch of Chicken Littles, trying to run and tell the king the sky is falling. Surprise, surprise. It’s not. There are aspects of the deal which are causing a great deal of concern in some sectors, including forestry, fishing and mining. But federal, provincial and Nisga’a negotiators have said all along, it wi!1 be a couple of years before a final deal is worked out. What is on the table right now is a framework which will lead to that final solution, but there is some hard bargaining to be done in the mean- time.
