1958 SEASON

TWENTY-SECOND ANNUAL EDITION

RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO

JOHN DE LA VEGA and RALPH ALEXANDER

JOHN DE LA VEGA A member of the Helms Athletic Foundation^ All-Southern '. California Board of Athletics from 1942 through 1948, and : from 1950 through 1958, John de la Vega, representing the : Times, has contributed much to Southern California high school athletics in connection with his journalistic ef- forts. Although he covered all sports, de la Vega favored Track & Field most of all, having been a participant in the . ' sport in high school, and college. Because of additional assignments, it v/as necessary for de la Vega to retire as a member of All-Southern California Board of Athletics in 1958, after having served the Board for 16 eventful years, during which time he aided wholeheart- edly in honoring hundreds of Southern California high school athletes. RALPH ALEXANDER ' Representing the Los Angeles Examiner, Ralph Alexander has served the Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Southern Cali- fornia Board of Athletics for 15 eventful years, 1944-1958, f during which time^iie has given unselfishly of hid time and . j effort to participate in the selection of hundreds of high • \ school athletes who haves been chosen for honors. . ( Furthermore, Ralph Alexander has devoted much of his time, I for some years past, to the Los Angeles Examiner's Scholastic j 1 Sports Associations outstanding prep school journalistic \ project, adding immeasureably to his not©worth/ contributions 1 to high school athletics. " t Down through the years, there has been no one who has had i the interest of high school athletes closer to his heart than ! has Ralph Alexander. f HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION Paul H. I This twenty-second annual Southern California Track and Field Record Book —-'is issued each year by Helms Athletic Foundation in the interest of high school athletics. It lists outstanding performances and records established by Southern California high school track and field athletes during the 1958 season. Five hundred record books are distributed by Helms Athletic Foundation each season without charge. Material gathered in this record booklet has been obtained from sources believed to be reliable. Information has been provided by high school coaches_, sports editors of student newspapers, as well as from Southern California news- papers . This record book, as all other books of a similar nature, is prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation under the supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director. It is distributed without charge to high schools, colleges, press, radio and television, athletic coaches and officials. Helms Athletic Foundation, vjith offices at Helms Hall, Los Angeles 34, is sponsored by Paul H. Helms, Jr. The Foundation was established in 1936, with one of its main functions that of recording the achievements of athletes in all sports and all divisions. This 22nd annual Track and Field Record Book contains best marks of Los Angeles City and C.I.F. track and field athletes over past years, past City and C.I.F. Championship teams and present City, State and National Interscholastic track and field marks. There is also listed Track and Field Athletes of the Year, for both Los Angeles City and C.I.F. , selections which have been made by All-Southern Calif- ornia Board of Athletics since 1937. These athletes have their names engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy which is permanently lodged in Helms Hall. JAMES BATES (MANUAL ARTS), WILLIAM DAVIS (ROOSEVELT), MEL CLIPPER (MUIR) SELECTED TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES _OF THE _YEAR, 1958

0 Co-Athletes of the Year were named in Los Angeles City High School Track and Field for the 1958 season — James Bates of Manual Arts and Willie Davis of Roosevelt — and Mel Clipper of Muir High School in Pasadena was voted best in C.I.F. competition when All-Southern California Board of Athletics met at Helms Hall to make its annual track and field selections. James Bates, Manual Arts High School's ace sprinter and All-City football player, had best times of 9.4 and 21.2 for the sprints during the season. He won both sprints in the City Championships and took a third place in the 100 and 220 in the State Meet at Long Beach Memorial Stadium. Bates' 9.4 second clocking was in a dual meet and therefore will not go into the books as a national mark. William Davis, Roosevelt High's sprinter-broad jumper deluxe, broke the national interscholastic record in the broad jump in the L.A. City Championships with a leap of 25' 5". It is doubtful that this mark will be accepted, however, as there was a helping wind during his jump. Davis suffered a sprained ankle in a Dorsey Tournament Baseball playoff game before the State Meet and did not compete. Marvelous Mel Clipper of Muir High School won C.I.F. Athlete of the Year honors, kel won the C.I.F. Southern Section titles in 9.7 and 20.6, the latter a new national interscholastic record, bettering a 25-year-old mark of 20.7 set by Jessie Owens and tied in 1955 by Eddie Southern. Clipper placed second in the State Meet 100 and won the 220 in State Meet record time of 20.7 seconds. James Bates is coached by Charles Toney, Willie Davis has Pete Clentzos as his coach, while Mel Clipper is coached by Walter Opp. 'HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION TWENTY-SECOND ANNUAL TRACK & FIELD RECORD BOOK....1958

Southern California High School Track and Field Athletes of the Year — Mel Clipper (Kuir, Pasadena), James Bates (Manual Arts), and Willie Davis (Roos- evelt) — will have their names engraved upon the Paul H.
