Parnell Club

Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.117 : 28 Jan. to 5 Feb. 2017 Congratulation Black Caps – Chappell-Hadlee Series is Ours!

Brilliant result for the Black Caps – so often denigrated, even vilified, by our media and, especially on talkback radio. Note that  The BLACK CAPS HAVE NOW WON THEIR LAST 8 ODI SERIES PLAYED IN HAVE LOST ALL OF THEIR LAST 13 ODI GAMES PLAYED OVERSEAS

The Aussies may not have had Steve Smith and (nor Wade and Khawaja) but we had injured Guptill, Watling, Ronchi, Corey Anderson, Wagner and Milne. But our replacements stepped up – Latham was superb behind the stumps and Lockie’s pace added hugely! We at Parnell should rejoice – Lockie Ferguson and Jimmy Neesham grew up through our Junior ranks. Lockie’s pace really did make a difference. Constantly +145, often up to 151 kph, the Aussies were kept very much on the back foot. Boult was inspired and the rest was history.

DAY 2. We started at 114/3 – Tim and Lalit who cmfortably took the total to 155 when Lalit was unexpectedly bowled and, equally unexpectedly , Tim was adjudged lbw shortly afer. Enter Ben Horne – needing a bat having been 12th man for the Aces time and again. Ben had warmed up with the Aces earlier in the morning at Colin Maiden, tore back to Shore Road to get his bat and, Murphy’s Law prevailed, he was out first ball trying to late cut. Back then to field for the Aces (who lost – 35 runs short of Canterbury’s 276) and, late in the day, returning for a 2nd innings cameo 27 for us. Irrepressible enthusiasm and energy – Ben’s turn for the Aces will come and many more will enjoy his wonderful brand of cricket! Our Skipper didn’t last either – lbw – 7 down, 71 needed, things looked shaky. But Josh joined James and built a rollicking partnership which earned us the 1st innings lead without further hiccup. Our declaration came minutes later at lunch. AUCC looked to start aggressively but Beecrotf was runout after an awful mixup and then fell steadily – another runout and then Rav and Josh did the work. After tea a late resurgeance took their total to 173 and a declaration left us the unlikely chase of 168 off a minimumof 15 overs (or 11.2 per over). Tim and Ben gave it a go – Ben smashed two 6s but was then , Jessehit 13 off an over but then holed out and Tim smacked a colossal 6 to the east of the far oak tree guarding the mangroves. But, with Josh commiting hari kari first ball and James being run out, discretion finally ruled leaving Tim and Flynn to play out the last overs. Not the most highly polished performance but one that earned us 13.86 points (6 + 7.86 bonus points).

Tim – took his score from 54* to 77 James Bevin – his excellent 44 came at a crucial time

Josh – coming in at 7/174, his stand of 60 with James won the day A relieved Coach turning over the winning run

COACH ROY GOODYEAR REPORTING: DAY 1. We won the toss and elected to bowl with Howick completed their innings of 312, all out,at the end of day one. We had some very good bowling: Bill Sanger: 26 overs 6 maidens 50 runs 3 wickets an outstanding effort on a hot day Jack Coman: 16 overs 5 maidens 43 runs 5 wickets a very good effort as well Razin Bharde 21 overs 6 maidens 59 runs 1 another very tidy spell of controlled spin

Day 2 We batted all day reaching a total of 223 for 8 wickets Tom Talbot: 70 J Mulvey: 35 S Wood: 29 were the main contributors on what ended up as a very acrimonious two day game. Wayne Mackenzie, who made 134 for HP, was the subject of several vey dubious decisions starting with the first ball of the day. This was probably the start of the rot and set the tone for the game. Such a pity that we cannot play "The Game" at this level without needless sledging, and dubious ethical values!! Humanity

[Editor’s note: For such an even tempered person as Roy to be upset indicates that this game was played in poor spirit – a great shame and, hopefully, official umpires will be allocated to this coming game against ECB which will be at Windsor Park. 2. Note that Grafton, who beat ECB outright by 10 wickets in the last game, have leap frogged into 2nd place. Our Skipper, Landy, has pointed out that the ACA Points Table is incorrect Grafton’s first 2 Dayer (vs Hibiscus Coast) is recorded as an outright win when it was only a 1st innings. The Table below notes the true position.

The Thirds’ final one day match for the season took place on Bloodworth no.1. There have been many good performances by the 3rds on this pitch over the years, this was no exception. The day started well, winning the toss and electing to bat, openers Sam 'Sweats' Wilson and Matthew 'VC' Vercoe-Curtis put on an opening stand of 216. Wilson finishing on a heart-breaking 99, Vercoe-Curtis a well made 116. From there, the rest of the top order went out seeking quick runs, all doing so but it wasn't until Luke O'Toole and Will St. John came to the crease that the opposition were well and truly hammered. The opposition elected that short, into the pitch bowling was their best option, 18 runs of 3 balls later, Luke was looking more than comfortable at the crease. Will supported him well, finishing on a well made 22 from 10, Luke finished 50* of just 22 balls. 381/7 after 45 overs. To Suburbs credit, they came out to bat looking to make a game of it. After the first over went for 33, wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Only the Suburbs opener putting on resistant of note, finishing on a well made 82. Suburbs bowled out for 222, St. John and Bharde finished with 4 wickets each, Poole and Jaffe 1 each. This win means the 3rds go undefeated in this seasons One Day Comp, well done boys, well deserved.

SKIPPER ELLIOT HUMPHRIES (aided by Ashwin Haran) REPORTS: A 4ths side with a few new faces and in a new grade took on Cornwall. After winning the toss and choosing to have a bat, the two Wills, Hay and Ormiston made a steady start. Rory O’Brien then got stuck in to the loose Cornwall bowling and made a fine 50 on 4’ths debut. Will Hay also snuck along to a 50. The platform was set for a big total and Ben Aveyard delivered top scoring with a quick 72. Conor Austin helped Ben out, quickly putting on 42. The Tail then finished it off with some good hitting lifting the score to an impressive 307. In reply Cornwall stuttered along in their innings losing regular wickets. Conor and Rory were especially good, while Ashwin Haran managed to hold down one end. Cornwall was eventually bowled out for 214 with Rory taking 4.

WINNERS: Great response to this Quiz. Update was sent on Thursday, 2 Feb. at 1.46pm. Answers, 100% correct, came through as follows: Alan Graham 3.15pm Craig Speakman 10.32pm David Sutcliffe 11.16pm

Alan recalls: “Thommo took the best catch I ever saw and Wisden rates at as one of the top 50 in tests. Ran round the fence and dived full length in a cloud of dust. By measuring the hoardings it was said he ran 35 yards to catch the skier. Batsman: D Murray.Bowler: I think Tanglefoot. Aust v Windies SCG approx 1975.

David comments: “Frank “Typhoon” Tyson himself, who obviously played for England. I believe one off season went wood chopping in Canada to build his back strength. Not sure it helped. Shane Bond, the one and only.NZ. We forget how much the Aussies feared and respected him. Harold Larwood , England. The only one who had to bowl at Bradman. Shoab Akhtar, Pakistan. I think perhaps the scariest I have seen. Hard to believe the quicks they unearthed over the years - remember and Wasim together against us in the mid 90s. Last but not least the utterly amazing Jeff Thomson of Aussie. You may recall the World Series of Cricket fast bowler competition in 79. , Imran, Thommo, DK Lillie, Holding, Roberts,Croft, Safraz, and . Still pretty neat to watch on You Tube. Thommo was the quickest of all.

RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 21 RUNS

On a lovely sunny day, opponents won the toss and decided to bat first. Aaron started it off with a bang. Wicket straight away - even before the batsmen could get his eye in. It is becoming a habit for him to grab wickets in the first over. Kings couldn't have asked for a better start. After the first wicket, the hosts started to get the hang of the wicket and slowly accumulated the runs. Sownder was introduced into the attack

and he got the ball to talk. Batsmen didn't have an answer to his in-swinger and had his stumps shattered. Sownder mixed the deliveries nicely and got the next batsmen trapped in front. Abrar on the other end, got the batsmen to nick one to Chak at slips. 4 wickets down for 60 odd runs, Kings did well to pull it back. Not having Sundar in the line up meant kings were short of a bowler. Roopesh tried different options but couldn't break the fifth wicket partnership until the 27th over. Arul came back and got the batsmen to loft one straight to Sownder at long off. Sownder and Abrar grabbed one wicket each to get their third and second wicket of the game, respectively. Roopesh bowling the final over, got a wicket of the first ball but gave away 11 runs. Few mis-fields and drop catches helped the hosts post a target of 192. Abrar and Chak started the run chase for Kings. Abrar smashed the opening bowler for few boundaries at his will, forcing the skipper to change the bowler. Chak was plumb in front without troubling the scorers. Praveen and Abrar played some beautiful shots all over the park and quickly got around 40 runs together. Praveen lost his cool and tried to heave through mid-wicket but was bowled. With spinners at both end, Sownder was sent up the order to capitalise on it. Sownder was caught at mid-on soon after he cleared the long on boundary. Abrar was batting sensibly playing all the bowlers with ease. His well made 46 came to an end with his tired looking shot to covers. Roopesh and Roy made sure they stayed in the middle till drinks. Just after drinks, Roopesh was caught behind. Kings were 5 down for 114. This was the beginning of a collapse. For the next 7 runs, Kings lost three wickets. Arul, Roy and Aaron made their way back to the camp quickly. Mani and Vignesh put on some resistance at the end but the opponents took the game away from Kings. Kings were all out for 170. Yet another middle order failure for Kings. But had lot of positives from the game though. Best Performer for Kings: Abrar

A notable win due very much to the astonishing bowling of Patron Simpson who produced his best figures for the millenium. Then, all was capped off by Chris Turner’s ton – a great result!

MESSAGE FROM DIANNE McDERMOTT !!!! The trip of a lifetime!

If you have ever watched a televised cricket match from the and thought to yourself, one day I would love to go there – this is your chance!!!! The Fingletoads have travelled to Barbados before for a Vintage Cricket Carnival, and because of the many requests for us to return there, we have entered two teams in the Golden Oldies Cricket Festival in Barbados in May. The hotel we are booked into - The Radisson, is the Festival hotel and is idyllically placed on the edge of the most beautiful little beach. With an extended pier at the end of the hotel that hosts live music and drinks each evening; the open sided restaurant where breakfast is served; to the marvellous positioning enabling easy access to St Lawrence Gap to enjoy all the restaurants and bars there; the cbd of where Duty Free shops abound; Hole Town – home to spa resorts and the incredible homes of the rich and famous; this truly is the destination that has something for everyone! We have two teams entered for the Festival – one is touring; assembling in Los Angeles and playing what will be a great fixture and fabulous day at Woodley Oval with our longtime friends The Hollywood Golden Oldies. Anyone who has been with the Toads through Los Angeles before will know how incredibly hospitable this team is and how much they love hosting us. They have some special catering, after match entertainment arranged and most importantly – they are organising for some of their older players to be there to catch up with everyone. From there we head to Miami where a fixture against the Miami masters is scheduled. A fantastic opportunity to visit this diverse and colourful City with it’s great architecture, amazing shopping and restaurants and of course, the plastic pink flamingos! The touring team then heads to Barbados where we are joined by a number of travellers either cruising, or flying in for the ten days there.

Whichever appeals to you – the full tour; part tour or even just the Festival week – take this opportunity to travel to Barbados for what really will be the trip of a lifetime. The full final itinerary is attached and details all prices – however, I am only an email away if you require special pricings to suit your dates.

Peter and I will be leading the team with fantastic support from Rex & Jan Hooton and Geoff & Sandy MacLeod-Smith. Others committed are:-

David Miller (, NZ) Peter McDougall (, Australia) Carl Duncan (Melbourne, Australia) Tony and Sandy Bateman (Vancouver, Canada) Greg and Margaret Schumacher (Reporoa, NZ) Andrew and Sharon Welch (Taupo, NZ) John Steer (Auckland, NZ) Graeme Young (Rotorua, NZ) Dan Healey (Auckland, NZ) Roger Carroll (Auckland, NZ) Tony Walsh (Christchurch, NZ) Tony Adcock (Christchurch, NZ)

We now also have a full time broker working with us – Sarah is bonded through Flight Centre and so there is full TAANZ protection on all she does, but more importantly – she has full access to incredible fares through Flight Centre. She has already done most of the bookings I am aware of for this trip and she has managed to find some fantastic options and routes for those who have booked. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Please let me know if you would like her details.

I have rooms on hold at all the hotels until the end of January, so please let me know if you are interested in joining us and I can help with any queries you might have, any advice you might need and also, encouragement to be part of the teams going to this fantastic destination!
