    (064/36) Sant'Andrea delle Fratte Sant'Andrea delle Fratte is a minor basilica, as well as an early 17th century parish, titular and convent church in the rione Colonna, just to the south of the Piazza di Spagna, dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle. History The first church here was built in the 1192, called infra hortes (later translated into "delle Fratte" or "shrubs") for it was located in a countryside area. The first time that the name Fratte is used is in the 15th century. It means literally "woods" or "overgrown vegetation", and seems to commemorate an overgrown area which might have been an abandoned piece of land, some shrubby garden or the facing slope of the Pincian hill when it was still wild. (1) (11) The church was probably rebuilt (or newly built on this site) in the 15th century, when there is a hint in the records that an Augustinian nunnery was established here. Then it was for some time the national church of Scotland as an independent kingdom (St Andrew is Scotland's patron). After the Scottish Reformation in 1560 the Scots completely lost interest in it, and for a while it was taken over by a pious confraternity dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. However it was given to the Order of Minim of St. Francis of Paola Friars in 1585, and they still serve the parish which was simultaneously created. (1) (11) In 1604 the construction of the new church was begun, under the design of Gaspare Guerra. The project halted in 1612 due to lack of funds.

    (096/11) Santa Maria della Vittoria Santa Maria della Vittoria is a 17th century baroque is titular and conventual church in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, under her title of Our Lady of Victory. For wealth, harmony and beauty, this church is one of the most representative monuments of the baroque style. History The present church is on the site of a very small but ancient chapel dedicated to St Paul, which had a hermitage attached for one hermit in the early 16th century. He justified his social existence by helping travelers caught out by darkness, bad weather and the threat of robbery. Back then, the area was entirely rural to the point where the Roman nobility used to go hunting and shooting birds hereabouts, especially in the deserted and overgrown ruins of the Baths of Diocletian nearby. (1) In the reign of Pope Paul V, however, the little chapel was demolished and replaced with a bigger edifice called San Paolo alla Fontana Felice (St Paul of the Happy Fountain), after a new acqueduct which had its terminus at the fountain across the road. (1) The present church was built by the Discalced Carmelite Friars, who purchased the church and some land adjacent in 1607. Initially they financed the work themselves, but when clearing the foundations discovered a superb pagan statue, called the Borghese Hermaphrodite, which is now in the Louvre. Cardinal Scipione Borghese made a deal with them, whereby he obtained the statue in exchange for paying for the work. Construction by the friars started in 1608, under the direction of Carlo Maderno, but the Cardinal's architect Giovanni Battista Soria was also involved after 1624 and it was he who designed the façade.

    Saint Peter’s Basilica Vatican City The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), officially known in Italian as the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano and commonly known as Saint Peter's Basilica, is located within the Vatican City. Saint Peter's Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world, holding 60,000 people. It is the symbolic "Mother church" of the Catholic Church and is regarded as one of the holiest Christian sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". In Catholic tradition, it is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to tradition, first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the 4th century. Construction of the present basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on April 18, 1506 and was completed on November 18, 1626. Saint Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions and for its historical associations. It is associated with the papacy, with the Counter-reformation and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age.

The conflict between empiricism and theoretical science in building Between the late sixteenth and the early eighteenth centuries the newborn science of mechanics, based on the use of mathematical analysis and on the adoption of novel spatial and structural models, gave rise to a willingness to turn the new devices designed by engineers into working prototypes. However, in comparison to other fields of application, these achievements will reach the building industry to a minor extent and much later, because of the strong rivalry with a know-how boasting ancient origins, centuries of perfection and unrivalled successes.

Leone, Boston College pon the death of his father Camillo in July 1666, Giovanni Battista Pamphilj’s legal status Uchanged dramatically: the eighteen-year-old prince became the primogenito of his wealthy and powerful family. With his inheritance came responsibilities, including the oversight of his father’s unfinished artistic projects at Sant’Agnese in Agone, Sant’Agostino, Sant’Andrea al Quirinale, the Collegio Innocenziano, and the Palazzo al Collegio Romano. The latter was the new wing, begun in 1659, which had been added to the Palazzo Aldobrandini al Corso (fig. 1), owned by his mother, Princess Olimpia Aldobrandini (1622–1681). After Olimpia, the sole heir to the great Aldrobrandini fortune, married Camillo Pamphilj in 1647, the couple moved into her palace rather than his, the Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona. The architect Antonio Del Grande designed Camillo’s new wing as a trapezoidal block to the northwest of the Aldobrandini property, between the Piazza al Col- legio Romano and the large courtyard (figs. 2, 3). Today, this unified palace is known as the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj al Corso. Under Camillo, construction was completed and the interior decoration was begun, but the task of outfitting the new rooms fell to Giovanni Battista.1 In this article—drawing on the information provided by two inventories of the palace’s con- tents, dating from ca. 1680 and 1709, respectively—I shall analyze and attempt to reconstruct the furnishings in Prince Pamphilj’s noble, winter, and mezzanine apartments.

    (115/37) La Maddalena La Maddalena is a 17th century Baroque-Rococo convent church just north of the Pantheon on Piazza della Maddalena, dedicated to St Mary Magdelene. The full name of the church is Santa Maria Maddalena in Campo Marzio, but this is very rarely used. It is usually refer to it simply as Santa Maria Maddalena. The church is served by the Priests Ministers of the Sick also known as Camilliani. It is the regional church in Rome for expatriates from the Abruzzo region of Italy. [1] History There was once a small oratory (recorded from 1320 on). The first documented reference is in a private will of someone called Madonna Rosuccia, dated 1403. Later that century it emerges as Santa Maria Maddalena dei Battuti, and was attached to a hospital being run by a Confraternita dei Disciplinati. This confraternity united with the Confraternita del Gonfalone in 1486. [1] [2] By the mid 16th century, the complex was in bad repair. In 1586, Pope Sixtus V entrusted the complex to Camillo de Lellis who made it the main seat of the Order of Clerks Regular, Ministers of the Infirm (abbreviated as M.I.), better known as the Camillians which he founded. St. Camillo died here in 1614. [1] [2] [4] [a] In 1621, after having obtained a grant from Pope Gregory XV to carry out the work, Camillians expanded the square, with the intention of giving their sacred building an adequate space. The complex job of rebuilding this cramped little monastery went on for many years; rebuilding of the church (1640-1642) and monastery (1640-1649) were carried out by a Ticinese architect, Giacomo Mola.
