Yeats's Ideal Others: the Dantean Mask of Yeats's Late Phase By Yeats’s Ideal Others: The Dantean Mask of Yeats’s Late Phase by Caron Barry LLB; MA Supervised by Professor Margaret Mills Harper Submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy November 2020 Yeats’s Ideal Others: The Dantean Mask of Yeats’s Late Phase Abstract W. B. Yeats was a poet deeply concerned with making and remaking himself through his work. As a part of that mission Yeats tended very often to follow the example of his most beloved precursors. However, Yeats’s precursors are almost always imagined figures, reinvented by the Irish poet as his needs or interests proscribe: ideal others. Yeats criticism brims with insightful and exhaustive research on the poet’s relationship with certain ideal others. Blake is often considered to be Yeats’s ultimate ideal other, not least because of Yeats’s own comments on the matter, but also due to the lifelong love the poet held for Blake and his adoption of the Blakean principle of contraries into the poet’s own system of correspondences in his late career. However, this thesis seeks to show that, while Blake may indeed have been the dominant ideal other of Yeats’s early phase, it was, in fact, Dante Alighieri, the epic Italian poet of the fourteenth century, who became the foremost ideal other of the poet’s late phase. Through a close analysis of the work of Yeats’s middle and late phases this research will demonstrate how the Irish poet sought to create an enduring poetic image in the western poetic tradition. A penchant for beautiful lofty things and the deeper mysteries of the inner and outer worlds led the older Yeats to the stony image of Dante. Attracted first to the poet who loved the most exalted lady in Christendom, as Yeats matured from a dreamy poet to a grander public figure, Yeats found in Dante the perfect model for the quest poet, a poet emblematic of worldly knowledge, spiritual wisdom, and transcendental romantic love. ii Yeats’s Ideal Others: The Dantean Mask of Yeats’s Late Phase Acknowledgements My deepest thanks to my supervisor Professor Margaret Harper for your constant support and your honest feedback.     Irish Migration Studies in Latin America Vol. 4, No. 3: July 2006 www.irlandeses.org Carnaval do Galway The Brazilian Community in Gort, 1999-2006 By Claire Healy Gort Inse Guaire, or Gort, lies just north of the border with County Clare in south County Galway in the West of Ireland, and has a population of about three thousand people. It is situated between the Slieve Aughty mountains and the unique karstic limestone landscape of the Burren, in the heartland of the countryside made famous by Lady Augusta Gregory and the poet W.B. Yeats in nearby Coole Park and Thoor Ballylee. Nineteenth- century Gort was a thriving market town providing a commercial centre for its fertile agricultural hinterland. A Sabor Brasil shop on Georges St., Gort market was held in the market (Claire Healy 2006) square every Saturday, and sheep, cattle and pig fairs were held regularly. A cavalry barracks accommodating eight British officers and eighty-eight soldiers was situated near the town and the Dublin and Limerick mail coaches trundled along the main street. [1] Throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, day labourers congregated on the market square in the centre of town hoping for a day’s seasonal work on a farm. By the 1990s, the town had become a quiet and sparsely populated shadow of its former self. Many of the shops along the main street, Georges Street, were shutting their doors for the last time, and the town was familiar to most Irish people only as a brief stop on the bus route from Galway to the southern cities of Cork and Limerick.

Obsessed with the peet's occultism, critics have pursued it to a depth which Yeats, a notedly poor scholar, could never have equalled; nor could he have matched their zeal for his politics. While it is not the purpose here to evaluate or even extensively to examine this criticism, two critics in particular, Richard Ellmann and John Unterecker, will preve especially valuable in this discussion. Ellmann's Yeats: ----The Man and The Masks is essentially a critical biography, Unterecker's ! Reader's Guide l! William Butler Yeats, while it uses biographical material, attempts to fecus upon critical interpretations of particular poems and groups of poems from the Collected Poems. In combination, the work of Ellmann and Unterecker synthesize the poet and his poetry and support the thesis here that the pattern which Yeats saw emerging in his life and which he incorporated in his work is, structurally, the same pattern of a death and rebirth cycle which he explicated in his philosophical book, A Vision.
