Villa Caldogno Si Trova Nel Comune Agricolo Omonimo, Una Decina Di

The Rise of the Architectural Fact
Pleitinx R, Barkouch G. The Rise of the Architectural Fact. ARENA Journal of Architectural Research. 2020; 5(1): 3. DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ajar.237 HUMANITIES ESSAY The Rise of the Architectural Fact Renaud Pleitinx and Ghita Barkouch Université catholique de Louvain, BE Corresponding author: Renaud Pleitinx ([email protected]) Through a Mediationist Theory of Architecture based on Jean Gagnepain’s much wider theory of mediation, this theoretical essay discusses the idea that is referred to here as the archi- tectural fact. Its first section therefore presents the five hypotheses of Gagnepain’s theory of mediation and also the definition of architecture that he has suggested. The second part of the essay provides a more detailed definition of the architectural fact and an explanation of the rational principles of its emergence. It involves a clarification of the fundamental notions of form and formula, key concepts of the Mediationist Theory of Architecture. Deepening our understanding of the architectural fact, the essay’s third section attempts to explain how it arises within the design process. To do so it provides a contrasting study of, firstly, a series of Palladio’s villas, and secondly, the different versions of the Kimbell Art Museum as designed by Louis I. Kahn and his team. Keywords: Architectural fact; Mediationist Theory of Architecture; Jean Gagnepain; form; formula; Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand; Andrea Palladio; villa; Louis Kahn; Kimbell Art Museum Introduction Architects feel it better than anyone, but everybody can have a grasp of it. Before the theory and its words, beyond the drawing and its lines, below the styles and their uses, beneath the project and its aims, between the concreteness of things and the abstraction of forms, stands the architectural fact. -

(2014), Wzorniki Architektoniczne Doby Klasycyzmu : Rozważania Nad
Kwartalnik Historii Kultury Materialnej, 2014, R. 62 Nr 4, s. 499-526 499 Ryszard Mączyński Wzorniki architektoniczne doby klasycyzmu. Próbując ująć w najogólniejsze kategorie całe bogactwo ilustrowanych publikacji archi- tektonicznych, wypadałoby rozważyć je z punktu widzenia adresata — kierowane były zarów- no do profesjonalistów, jak też do dyletantów3. -
'Parametric Thinking' in Palladio's Villas. Surveying
2019 IMEKO TC-4 International Conference on Metrology for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Florence, Italy, December 4-6, 2019 Roots of ‘Parametric Thinking’ in Palladio’s Villas. Surveying, interpreting and visual programming the plates from I quattro libri di architettura 1 2 Roberta Spallone , Michele Calvano 1 Department of Architecture and Design – Politecnico di Torino, viale Mattioli 39 10125 Torino, [email protected] 2 Department of Architecture and Design – Politecnico di Torino, viale Mattioli 39 10125 Torino, [email protected] Abstract – In this work we want to link the considerations relating to the rectangular ratios and harmonic proportions of Palladio's plans, through the automation of the Shape Grammar rules rewritten here in Visual Programming Language. This operation allows to program generalized automatisms for the construction of some Palladian villas (e.g. Villa Thiene, Villa Sarego, Villa Poiana), cataloguing them in families mainly linked to the size of the tartan grid used (e.g. 5 x 3). This experimentation could show how algorithmic thought has distant roots, finding in the contemporary era a new digital life through software and procedures now available to the designer. I. INTRODUCTION (RS, MC) When in 2008 Patrik Schumacher launched Parametricism as Style, the Parametricist Manifesto, a largely antagonistic response from historians, critics, theorists, and scholars, arose. They aimed to demonstrate the presence of a “parametric thinking” in the architecture of the past: it could be say that parametricism was an intrinsic feature of architecture. More recently, some scholars started to analyze both architectural treatises and historical artifacts using the new tools of parametric modelling and visual programming language (VPL) offered by the digital revolution. -

Toward a New Approach to Evaluating Significance in Recent-Past Preservation Planning with a Case Study of 1960s Properties in Philadelphia County Abstract In evaluating a stock of recent-past buildings, it is important to stay alert to the ways in which recent-past heritage is more difficult to assess, and what we might be prone to do to make it easier to assess. It is not enough to involve numerous people in the process and to articulate our method of analysis. We as preservation professionals must also consciously strive to avoid cognitive shortcuts. We must set evaluative standards and choose priorities, without simply dismissing a great portion of the built environment as “crap” or accepting self-evidence as a measure of significance. -
