ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

826NYC is a tutoring and literacy center dedicated to helping underserved students, ages 6-18, with expository and creative writing, homework, college preparation, and other essential skills. Modeled after (founded in 2002 by and Nínive Calegari in ’s Mission District), 826NYC is located in the neighborhood of and is fronted by the world famous Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store. The revenues from the store support 826NYC and its student programming.

826NYCs work is based on the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. Through the work of talented staff and the assistance of more than 1,000 volunteers, 826NYC provides after-school tutoring, class field trips, writing workshops, in-schools programs (including special projects and full-time staffing of a writers’ at the Williamsburg Library), journal and book publication, and college preparation—all free of charge. 826NYC is especially committed to supporting teachers and publishing student work.

826 tutoring and literacy centers are in seven other cities—San Francisco, , Ann Arbor, , Seattle, , and Washington, DC. These eight chapters operate under the umbrella of , which coordinates the work of the chapters, implements best practices as established by the chapters and the 826 National board, and raises funds to support the work of 826 National and the chapters. 826 was chosen by GOOD Magazine as one of the top 30 companies to work at. 826NYC, the other seven chapters, and 826 National are separate 501(c)(3) organizations with their own boards of directors. 826NYC and the other seven 826 chapters also have representatives on the 826 National board.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

826NYC is seeking to hire a full-time Executive Director who will report to the board of directors and coordinate the work of 826NYC with 826 National and the other 826 chapters. We are seeking a highly motivated self-starter who understands and values the 826 mission, will manage and provide leadership for, and ultimately be responsible for the financial health and well-being of the organization. The position will be responsible for the legal, financial, and programmatic success of 826NYC. He or she will manage a small staff and work directly with the 826NYC board.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of the New York public school system and communities, as well as posses an entrepreneurial spirit with a desire and vision to take 82NYC into its next decade. Candidates should have a minimum of 5-10 years experience in management of, and fundraising for, a community-based nonprofit organization. Candidates who have excelled in leadership positions in other comparable positions in business, government, charitable foundations, and nonprofit development are also encouraged to apply.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Fundraising and Financial Management: o Responsible for all aspects of 826NYC fundraising, including grant applications, corporate, foundation and private philanthropy, individual donations, and special events. o Work closely with the 826NYC board and staff to cultivate, engage, and steward donors at all levels of giving. o Ensure prudent fiscal management of 826NYC, including establishment of salaries, management of expenses, strategic financial planning, and preparation of quarterly financial reports and annual budgets. o Manage all legal and financial issues, including contracts, employment matters, leases and building management, book sales and publication agreements, and Superhero Store retail operations. o Develop and implement a long-term strategic and fundraising plans.

• Programming: o Oversee all programming, including after-school tutoring, in-schools projects, field trips, workshops, middle school writers’ rooms, college essay assistance, and special events. o Responsible for ensuring that 826NYC achieves its educational mission and complies with the chapter standards (best practices) developed by 826 National. o Development and implementation of a long-term strategy to expand the value of 826NYC’s resources for the benefit of underserved children in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

• Supervision of 826 NYC Staff, Interns, and Volunteers: o Direct a current staff of full-time and part-time employees, as well as interns and volunteers, to achieve 826NYC’s educational mission. o Supervise the staff’s work in the areas of programming, retail, volunteer recruitment and supervision, development, publications, and special events. o Encourage professional development and continuing education of the staff. o Provide regular feedback and advice to the staff, including annual performance reviews.

• 826 National and the Other 826 Chapters: o Work with the 826 National CEO and his staff to coordinate the work of 826NYC with the National office and the other 826 chapters. o Work with 826 National development staff on fundraising opportunities, proposals, site visits o Report to 826 National on finances, programming, publications, volunteerism, and other matters as required by the 826 National chapter reporting standards. o Collaborate with 826 National in broadening and deepening 826NYC’s programming across the five boroughs. o Represent 826NYC at 826 National meetings, executive director meetings, staff conferences, and other gatherings.

• General: o Report to the 826NYC board of directors on programming, fundraising, finances, events, publications, personnel, strategic planning, and other matters. o Work with the 826NYC board to develop and implement a strategic plan and fundraising plan for the organization. o Articulate 826NYC mission to funders, volunteers, the educational community, and the media. o Guide all external relations and collaborations, including website, publications, annual fundraising appeals, and public relations.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:

Compensation: Competitive with other Executive Director positions at similar-sized New York City non-profits; specific compensation dependent on experience and qualifications.

Benefits: Three weeks annual vacation; medical, dental, and vision care.
