Allison Wolfe Interviewed by John Davis Los Angeles, California June 15, 2017 0:00:00 to 0:38:33 ________________________________________________________________________ 0:00:00 Davis: Today is June 15th, 2017. My name is John Davis. I’m the performing arts metadata archivist at the University of Maryland, speaking to Allison Wolfe. Wolfe: Are you sure it’s the 15th? Davis: Isn’t it? Yes, confirmed. Wolfe: What!? Davis: June 15th… Wolfe: OK. Davis: 2017. Wolfe: Here I am… Davis: Your plans for the rest of the day might have changed. Wolfe: [laugh] Davis: I’m doing research on fanzines, particularly D.C. fanzines. When I think of you and your connection to fanzines, I think of Girl Germs, which as far as I understand, you worked on before you moved to D.C. Is that correct? Wolfe: Yeah. I think the way I started doing fanzines was when I was living in Oregon—in Eugene, Oregon—that’s where I went to undergrad, at least for the first two years. So I went off there like 1989-’90. And I was there also the year ’90-’91. Something like that. For two years. And I met Molly Neuman in the dorms. She was my neighbor. And we later formed the band Bratmobile. But before we really had a band going, we actually started doing a fanzine. And even though I think we named the band Bratmobile as one of our earliest things, it just was a band in theory for a long time first. But we wanted to start being expressive about our opinions and having more of a voice for girls in music, or women in music, for ourselves, but also just for things that we were into. -

Place and Punk: the Heritage Significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West
Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place. -
Punk Im Wortsinn
This song/That song/Love song/Hate song/You’re so bored with/ My life/Your life/This life/Our lives/You’re so bored with«; »I don’t feel strange/I don’t feel anything«. -
Barsuk Records
Barsuk Records -- pronounced bar-SUKE by those in the know (it's a Russian word that means 'badger,' and is the name of the dog that appears in the label's logo) -- is perhaps most recognized for having put out the first several albums by Death Cab for Cutie, the last of which, the classic Transatlanticism (2003), is one of very few indie albums to have sold the half-million copies required to be certified Gold in the United States, and which, along with the three other DCfC studio albums and a handful of EP and archival releases in the Barsuk catalog, continues to be a touchstone of Northwest indie rock. (Death Cab, incidentally, released Narrow Stairs in the spring of 2008 -- their second album on major label Atlantic -- which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has received near-universal critical praise.) Death Cab's success both on and off the indie, however, is hardly the only noteworthy musical achievement from Barsuk's 10-year history, during which the label has released music by a startling array of many of the most acclaimed artists in indiedom, including Nada Surf, Menomena, Mates of State, Ra Ra Riot, Say Hi, David Bazan, The Long Winters, Viva Voce, Rocky Votolato, John Vanderslice, Jesse Sykes, They Might Be Giants, and Rilo Kiley, alongside a handful of younger bands such as Aqueduct, Jim Noir, and others. Not bad for a label started as a hobby that remains to this day entirely independently owned and operated, outside the financial influence of the major label system! ===================== Here's the story of Barsuk the dog, who was a real and very great canine friend of ours: http://www.barsuk.com/home/barsuk ===================== Here's a link to the main Artists page on Barsuk, which is a good starting source page for basic info on all our bands: http://www.barsuk.com/bands ===================== And here's a short timeline with a few significant dates: 1991 - Barsuk the dog is born. -

The purpose of this research, in large part, is to show that punk has in fact been a persistent and consistent tradition in the decades since. -
Sing Backwards and Weep
PRAISE FOR SING BACKWARDS AND WEEP “The artist’s journey to find one’s true voice can travel some very dark roads; addiction, violence, poverty, and soul-crushing alienation have taken the last breath of many I have called friend. Mark Lanegan dragged his scuffed boots down all of those bleak byways for years, managed to survive, and in the process created an astonishing body of work. Sing Backwards and Weep exquisitely details that harrowing trip into the heart of his particular darkness. Brutally honest, yet written without a molecule of self-pity, Lanegan paints an introspective picture of genius birthing itself on the razor’s edge between beauty and annihilation. Like a Monet stabbed with a rusty switchblade, Sing Backwards and Weep is breathtaking to behold but hurts to see. I could not put this book down.” —D. RANDALL BLYTHE, author of Dark Days and lead vocalist of Lamb of God “If you ever wondered how Mark Lanegan’s music came to blossom, here’s a taste of the dark dirt that fertilized it. But saying that, or something like it, feels irresponsible, almost like saying, ‘If you want to make great, soul- shattering art, traumatize yourself to the limit and beyond’ … Sing Backwards and Weep is gnarly, naked, and true.” —MICHAEL C. HALL of Dexter and Six Feet Under “A no-holds-barred memoir of uncompromising honesty. All of the usual suspects are here—sex, drugs, rock and roll—and if that were all, it would be compelling enough on the strength of Lanegan’s writing and the setting of ’80s and ’90s Seattle, a near mythical time and place in music history.
