Although many of these contemporary issues often go undiscussed in everyday, casual conversation with friends and/or family, it is important to address them. As journalists, we strive to broaden our skills by reporting and writing on subjects that are often uncomfort able or unfamilar. As editors, we challenged our staff writers to push their personal boundries and limits and devel op stories they may have normally shied away from. In this issue, you will read stories that are edgy, unconventional and distinctive. Each story provides a glimpse into different lifestyles. We hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as we did. Best wishes, Annie Billington -rocker by night, tecTftalks to one of her kindergarten students at Columbia Elementary School. Guitars and ABC’s are a huge part of Leanne Uttech’s life. Megan Burcham talks with this punk rocker kindergarten teacher. Photos by Megan Burcham and courtesy of Leanne Uttech. Leanne Uttech jumps in the air doing scissor kicks in red and black plaid pants and a black tank top while singing short, catchy lyrics to the crowd. Her leopard- print guitar strap hangs across her slim left shoulder holding the red guitar she rapidly strums. Her right arm is adorned with a red and white striped wristband and a blue heart tattoo on her shoulder with her husband’s name, Timothy, tattooed in the middle. At first glance this punk rocker might seem like she could kick some ass, but when she smiles, her dimples blow her cover. Uttech, 27, is the lead singer of an old school power punk band. The Temper Tantrums, which started about five years ago in Bellingham. To the kindergarten students she teaches, however, she is simply known as Mrs. Uttech. She earned her education degree form Western Washington University in 2000 and has taught at Columbia Elementary School in Bellingham for the past three years. Uttech and the other members of The Temper Tantrums have toured several states to perform at bars, all-ages clubs, house parties and festivals for the past three summer breaks. “My students know I’m in a band,” Uttech said smiling. “Sometimes I’ll bring our CD’s in, and they’ll all dance at playtime. It’s a fun age to teach, though, they get excited about everything; I could stand on my head and they would clap.” Uttech said some of her student’s parents have come to her local shows. When she knows parents are coming to a performance she usually wears longer sleeved shirts to cover her tattoo. “About a year ago some parents heard we were having a show,” she said laughing. “It was funny, there were all these 35-year-old women cheering in the crowd.” While attending Western in 1998, Uttech and her roommate at the time, Effie Martinson, dated brothers who were in the local band. The Thriftshop Junkies. Uttech and Martinson did not want to be known as the girls who went to see their boyfriends at the punk rock shows, so they decided to form their own punk band. They chose Martinson to play bass, Uttech would play guitar and sing and their friend Melissa agreed to play the drums. “(Uttech) and I had never played the guitar or bass so we had to teach ourselves how to play,” Martinson said. Their new band practiced using their boyfriend’s equip ment since they did not have any of their own. Allison Wolfe Interviewed by John Davis Los Angeles, California June 15, 2017 0:00:00 to 0:38:33 ________________________________________________________________________ 0:00:00 Davis: Today is June 15th, 2017. My name is John Davis. I’m the performing arts metadata archivist at the University of Maryland, speaking to Allison Wolfe. Wolfe: Are you sure it’s the 15th? Davis: Isn’t it? Yes, confirmed. Wolfe: What!? Davis: June 15th… Wolfe: OK. Davis: 2017. Wolfe: Here I am… Davis: Your plans for the rest of the day might have changed. Wolfe: [laugh] Davis: I’m doing research on fanzines, particularly D.C. fanzines. When I think of you and your connection to fanzines, I think of Girl Germs, which as far as I understand, you worked on before you moved to D.C. Is that correct? Wolfe: Yeah. I think the way I started doing fanzines was when I was living in Oregon—in Eugene, Oregon—that’s where I went to undergrad, at least for the first two years. So I went off there like 1989-’90. And I was there also the year ’90-’91. Something like that. For two years. And I met Molly Neuman in the dorms. She was my neighbor. And we later formed the band Bratmobile. But before we really had a band going, we actually started doing a fanzine. And even though I think we named the band Bratmobile as one of our earliest things, it just was a band in theory for a long time first. But we wanted to start being expressive about our opinions and having more of a voice for girls in music, or women in music, for ourselves, but also just for things that we were into.

  • Place and Punk: the Heritage Significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West
Place and Punk: The heritage significance of Grunge in the Pacific North West William Kenneth Smith MA By Research University of York Archaeology May 2017 Abstract Academic institutions and the heritage industry are now actively seeking to understand the wider social, cultural and economic processes which surround the production and consumption of popular music histories. Music is a local creation; it is created through a flux of internal and external influences, and is bound up in questions of economy, networks, art, identity and technology. In the early 1990s the Pacific North West of the United States of America gave birth to what became known as the musical genre of ‘grunge’. It developed into a distinctive genre, presenting a style and sound which propagated within the confines of a specific time and place. As construction sites continue to emerge throughout the Pacific North West, the impact of music still provides an essential contribution to the regions character and culture. Despite this, countercultural pasts are vulnerable; not only to the passage of time but also the processes of development, gentrification and marginalization. This research explores the heritage significance of the Pacific North West punk scene. It presents a historiography of punk and an appraisal of the scholarly discourse surrounding place. This study utilizes artifacts, sites and oral histories to explore countercultural material and memories as well as the form and function of punk. Themes such as geography and environment are enfranchised into the discussion as ethnography and multidisciplinary approaches are applied to make a unique contribution to what is an essential and timely discussion regarding people, culture, heritage and place.

  • Punk Im Wortsinn
This song/That song/Love song/Hate song/You’re so bored with/ My life/Your life/This life/Our lives/You’re so bored with«; »I don’t feel strange/I don’t feel anything«.

  • Barsuk Records
Barsuk Records -- pronounced bar-SUKE by those in the know (it's a Russian word that means 'badger,' and is the name of the dog that appears in the label's logo) -- is perhaps most recognized for having put out the first several albums by Death Cab for Cutie, the last of which, the classic Transatlanticism (2003), is one of very few indie albums to have sold the half-million copies required to be certified Gold in the United States, and which, along with the three other DCfC studio albums and a handful of EP and archival releases in the Barsuk catalog, continues to be a touchstone of Northwest indie rock. (Death Cab, incidentally, released Narrow Stairs in the spring of 2008 -- their second album on major label Atlantic -- which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has received near-universal critical praise.) Death Cab's success both on and off the indie, however, is hardly the only noteworthy musical achievement from Barsuk's 10-year history, during which the label has released music by a startling array of many of the most acclaimed artists in indiedom, including Nada Surf, Menomena, Mates of State, Ra Ra Riot, Say Hi, David Bazan, The Long Winters, Viva Voce, Rocky Votolato, John Vanderslice, Jesse Sykes, They Might Be Giants, and Rilo Kiley, alongside a handful of younger bands such as Aqueduct, Jim Noir, and others. Not bad for a label started as a hobby that remains to this day entirely independently owned and operated, outside the financial influence of the major label system! ===================== Here's the story of Barsuk the dog, who was a real and very great canine friend of ours: http://www.barsuk.com/home/barsuk ===================== Here's a link to the main Artists page on Barsuk, which is a good starting source page for basic info on all our bands: http://www.barsuk.com/bands ===================== And here's a short timeline with a few significant dates: 1991 - Barsuk the dog is born.

  • Sing Backwards and Weep
PRAISE FOR SING BACKWARDS AND WEEP “The artist’s journey to find one’s true voice can travel some very dark roads; addiction, violence, poverty, and soul-crushing alienation have taken the last breath of many I have called friend. Mark Lanegan dragged his scuffed boots down all of those bleak byways for years, managed to survive, and in the process created an astonishing body of work. Sing Backwards and Weep exquisitely details that harrowing trip into the heart of his particular darkness. Brutally honest, yet written without a molecule of self-pity, Lanegan paints an introspective picture of genius birthing itself on the razor’s edge between beauty and annihilation. Like a Monet stabbed with a rusty switchblade, Sing Backwards and Weep is breathtaking to behold but hurts to see. I could not put this book down.” —D. RANDALL BLYTHE, author of Dark Days and lead vocalist of Lamb of God “If you ever wondered how Mark Lanegan’s music came to blossom, here’s a taste of the dark dirt that fertilized it. But saying that, or something like it, feels irresponsible, almost like saying, ‘If you want to make great, soul- shattering art, traumatize yourself to the limit and beyond’ … Sing Backwards and Weep is gnarly, naked, and true.” —MICHAEL C. HALL of Dexter and Six Feet Under “A no-holds-barred memoir of uncompromising honesty. All of the usual suspects are here—sex, drugs, rock and roll—and if that were all, it would be compelling enough on the strength of Lanegan’s writing and the setting of ’80s and ’90s Seattle, a near mythical time and place in music history.
